Box Score (New/Sortable Format) LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Jan. 19, 2013) –
Kiara Brown reached 1,000 points for her career at Edinboro while scoring a game-high 18 points to help the Fighting Scots (12-3, 9-2 PSAC) escape with a 67-57 victory over Lock Haven (6-9, 3-8) on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse.
Edinboro finished the game on a 12-3 run over the final 2:49 of game time to pull away late in what was a nip-and-tuck contest from start to finish. Ahead by just a point at 55-54, freshman
Bobbi Baker started the game-ending swing by burying a 14-footer for the Scots. Following a Lock Haven miss and a Brown rebound, Baker finished with a lay-up in transition and suddenly Edinboro had a bit of breathing room at 59-54 with 1:59 to play.
The Scots were able to clamp down defensively and sink their free throws over the final 1:40 to put the game on ice. Brown and
Laurel Lindsay both calmly knocked down four shots apiece at the line during the span to put the game out of reach.
With the win, Edinboro scored its 10th straight triumph over Lock Haven dating back to 2008, but the victory was anything but easy. The Lady Eagles began the game on a 10-2 break over the first four minutes to establish control. Edinboro counter-punched, however, with a 12-0 run of their own to take its first lead at 14-10 with 10:48 in the first half. Lock Haven matched Edinboro nearly basket-for-basket the rest of the opening period as Edinboro ultimately took a 29-26 lead to intermission.
Brown made Edinboro history by reaching the 1,000-point mark early in the second half. The senior drove the lane and finished by laying a shot off the glass and in to hit the milestone and give Edinboro a 37-32 lead in the process.
Lock Haven refused to go away, however, keeping the game in doubt until the end. The contest saw six ties and Edinboro's largest lead until the final minute was just six.
A layup from Emily Daugherty tied the game at 41-41 with 11:31 to play and the score held for more than two minutes as offense was hard to come by.
Samantha Blazetic put it up and in for a 43-41 lead with 9:05 left and Edinboro would not relinquish their advantage the rest of the way.
Lock Haven continued to keep things interesting, though, cutting the lead to one at 49-48 with 5:35 left when it was another freshman,
Lauren Hippo who had an answer for Edinboro with a jump shot to stretch the lead to three again. The Lady Eagles trimmed the deficit to a point at 55-54 on a pair of free throws from Marrysa Moyer before Baker stepped up with her two clutch baskets to start the final run.
Lindsay was the only other Edinboro player in double figures as she finished with 11 points and six rebounds along with two blocks, two assists and two steals. Blazetic recorded seven points, four rebounds, four steals and three blocks while Baker tallied seven points off the bench. Hippo played a career-high 22 minutes with six points and five rebounds.
Edinboro shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field while limiting Lock Haven to 32.2 percent (19-59) and forcing the Lady Eagles into 20 turnovers. Lock Haven stayed close thanks in large part to its ability to win the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Boro by a 41-32 margin.
Moyer paced Lock Haven with 13 points along with 11 rebounds and Daugherty finished with 12 points and six boards.
Next up for the Fighting Scots is a home match-up with nationally-ranked Indiana (Pa.). That contest is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start on Wednesday evening at McComb Fieldhouse.
