MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 5, 2013) – A career-high 31 points from Kiara Brown was enough to put down a furious second half rally from Millersville and send Edinboro to its sixth straight victory, a 69-64 decision at Pucillo Gymnasium.

A pair of first half runs from Edinboro (9-2, 6-1 PSAC) – one to begin the game and one to finish the half – established some early breathing room for the visitors. Edinboro opened the night on a 10-3 run to take the early momentum. Millersville (8-3, 5-2) kept things close for the majority of the opening stanza, cutting the Boro lead to only five at 26-21 with 4:33 left in the half. The Scots opened things up again with a 9-0 sprint to end the first half and take a 32-21 lead into the break.

Edinboro's defense stifled its opposition to take a first half advantage for the second straight night. Twenty-four hours prior, the Scots held Shippensburg to just 23 percent shooting in the opening half. On Saturday, Edinboro limited the Marauders to just 28.6 percent (8-of-28) from the floor while also forcing 10 turnovers during the period.

The double-digit first half lead would last just five minutes into the second period, however.

A layup from Aignee Freeland on the first possession out of the break stretched Edinboro's lead to a game-high 13 points (34-21), but Millersville whittled the margin back into single digits by responding with an 8-0 run to pull to within five at 34-29. A jumper from Brown momentarily stemmed the tide, but Millersville was able to keep the Boro lead at just five by trading baskets for the next two minutes.

The Marauders completed the rally on back-to-back three-pointers from Mashira Newman and Carly Gallagher to take their first lead since the opening seconds at 39-38 just over five minutes into the second half.

Edinboro responded with leadership from Brown. The senior guard worked her way to the line on back-to-back possessions and connected on four straight shots from the charity stripe. A lay-in from Darche' Jackson put Edinboro ahead by six at 45-39.

During a seven-minute span beginning with 14:37 left, Brown completely took over the game, scoring 15 of Edinboro's 19 points to allow the Scots to maintain their edge. In all, Brown would score 20 of Edinboro's 37 second half points.

A three from Laurel Lindsay put Edinboro up seven at 61-54 with four and a half minutes left, but Millersville refused to go away. The Marauders pulled to within three (65-62) with 1:38 left following a free throw from Miesha Cousins.

A turnover by Edinboro gave Millersville the ball and a chance to tie, but a traveling violation gave the ball right back to the Scots. Edinboro would not allow Millersville another opportunity as a clutch jumper in the high post from Samantha Blazetic gave the Boro a two-possession lead with just 40 seconds on the clock. A three attempt by Mosley was no good, forcing the Marauders to foul. That allowed Blazetic to put the game on ice with a pair of free throws.

Brown connected on 9 of 18 shots from the field, tallied a pair of three-pointers and finished 11 of 13 from the line while playing a full 40 minutes.

Jackson finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Blazetic recorded her third straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Aignee Freeland, a native of nearby York, played in front of a hometown contingent and posted eight points, nine rebounds and a career-high four blocks. Lindsay also chipped in with seven points and seven boards.

Newman poured in 23 points and Aurielle Mosley scored 16 points and pulled down 12 boards for Millersville.

Edinboro will take the week off before returning home to McComb Fieldhouse for the final crossover weekend of the season. The Fighting Scots host Kutztown and East Stroudsburg Jan. 11-12 with both games beginning at 5:30 p.m.
