Box Score (New/Sortable Format)
INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 19, 2013) – Thanks to a defense that forced five turnovers and blocked a punt, and three Jon Girvin touchdown passes, Edinboro rallied from an early deficit to hand 22nd-ranked Indiana(Pa.) a 36-30 loss in a PSAC West contest at George P. Miller Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The victory, called one of the biggest of his eight-year career as head coach by Scott Browning, boosted the Fighting Scots to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Western Division. IUP suffered its second straight defeat to fall to 5-2 and 2-2, respectively.

"This was a tremendous win. In my eight years this is one of our top victories because of our youth and injury situation," related Browning. "We've been through so many things this year. It says a lot about our coaching staff and our team. It says a lot about our character." The upset was the first against a ranked team since a win over West Liberty in 2011. It also snapped a three-game losing streak to Indiana(Pa.).

Edinboro fell behind 6-0 late in the first quarter on a pair of Brett Ullman field goals, but after a slow start the offense got going behind redshirt freshman Jon Girvin, and the defense played inspired ball while forcing five turnovers and returning a blocked punt for a touchdown.

Ullman's field goals of 41 and 43 yards gave the Crimson Hawks a 6-0 lead with 1:47 left in the first quarter. Up until that point the Boro offense had failed to gain a first down in two possessions. The deficit could have been worse after IUP was forced to punt on its opening possession and the punt bounced into an Edinboro player and was recovered by IUP at the EU 15. On 4th and 1 from the six, Izzy Green was thrown for a one-yard loss by Mike Shansky an Brandon Marlow.

Edinboro's offense finally got going on its third possession, keyed by a bit of trickery. On a fourth down play from the IUP 48, Brad West executed a perfect fake punt, completing a 22-yard pass to Blaine Iskula as the first quarter ended for Edinboro's first first down.

Darren Massey
On the first play of the second quarter Girvin hooked up with Jordan Williams on a fade route for a 26-yard touchdown pass. As this game with numerable wacky plays would have it, T.J. Hardy's extra point was blocked and the score was tied at 6-6.
That was just the start of the scoring in a wild second period. The Edinboro defense forced a three-and-out, and Devin Ghafoor blocked Matt Spegal's punt. The b all bounced high in the air, with Darren Massey pulling it down and returning 19 yards for a touchdown. Mike Simons came in and booted the extra point for a 13-6 lead.

The Crimson Hawks had a short field on the ensuing possession thanks to a short kickoff and penalty. They needed just three plays to cover the remaining 46 yards, bolstered by a personal foul against the Scots. De'Antwan Williams burst up the middle on a 167-yard run to tie the score at 13-13 with 12:31 remaining.

Back came the Edinboro offense, marching 80 yards in five plays. The bulk of it came on one play, with Girvin and Massey combining on a 75-yard touchdown pass, the longest play from scrimmage this year. Girvin lofted a long pass down the middle just over the arms of an IUP defender. Massey caught the ball at the 50 and outran several defenders to give Edinboro a 19-13 lead with 10:01 left in the quarter. It marked the fourth touchdown in the first five minutes of the period. Simon's extra point was wide to the left.

IUP would take its last lead of the game four minutes later after Terrell Holloway blocked West's punt and IUP recovered at the EU 15. Williams scored on a two-yard run at the 6:01 mark, with Ullman's PAT giving the Crimson Hawks a 20-19 advantage.
Edinboro regained the lead for good with 3 minutes, 30 seconds left in the half. Two big plays – a 29-yard run by D'Andrea Vaughn and a 34-yard pass from Girvin to Ben Eisel – helped the Scots move to the IUP 14. Two plays later Jeremy Donaldson was in the end zone on a nine-yard run, but the touchdown was called back on a holding penalty. The Fighting Scots would have to settle for Hardy's 39-yard field goal for a 22-20 lead.

The half would end with that score, although the Scots dodged a major threat following a punt in the final two minutes. Terrill Barnes returned a punt 52 yards and was almost in the end zone when he was stripped of the ball by Jake Leber at the one. The ball hit the pylon and was ruled a touchback.

Edinboro took the second half kickoff and put together its best drive of the afternoon. The Fighting Scots went 77 yards on ten plays, with just one pass as Girvin and Donaldson split the rushing duties. That one pass was a 22-yard hookup with Eisel, and on the next play IUP was called for a pass interference penalty, giving the Scots the ball at the IUP 23. Six plays later Donaldson bulled in from a yard out for his fifth touchdown of the year. Simon's PAT gave the Scots a 29-20 lead with 11:06 left in the third quarter.

The Scots were back in business after Bobby Kmetz sacked Mike Box and forced a fumble. Quinton Cumings would recover at the EU 39. Girvin immediately found Nick Helmick for a 23-yard gain to the IUP 38. Later facing a 4th-and-5 at the 33, Girvin would beat a full blitz and deliver a perfect strike over the middle to Massey for a 33-yard touchdown pass. That gave the Scots a 36-20 lead midway through the third quarter.

IUP inserted Logan Weaver into the game at quarterback, and he would guide the Crimson Hawks to a field goal on his first possession. Ullman's third 3-pointer of the day, this one from 43 yards, pulled the Crimson Hawks to within 36-23 with 4:11 still left in the third quarter.

Edinboro would have two more opportunities to score. The first drive ended when the Scots lined up for a 41-yard field goal late in the third quarter. They would attempt a fake, but Kellen O'Neill's pass fell incomplete.

The defense stymied IUP on its next two possessions. Ghafoor, who had a huge game defensively, intercepted his second pass of the day on the next play after the fake field goal. On IUP's next possession, after West pinned the Crimson Hawks deep in their own territory, IUP would end up going for it on 4th-and-7 from its own 31 with just over ten minutes remaining to play. Shansky
would sack Box, who had returned at quarterback, for a nine-yard loss.

The Scots were unable to advantage, however, as Simon's 34-yard field goal attempt was blocked.

IUP would make things interesting in the final eight minutes. The Crimson Hawks closed to 36-30 as Box directed a nine-play, 76-yard drive that culminated in his 18-yard touchdown pass to Barnes with 5:05 to play.

Edinboro was unable to run out the clock, but West's 52-yard punt rolled dead at the IUP 14. On second down Delano Fabor picked off Box' pass over the middle, the last of many big plays by the defense.

The Fighting Scots would finish the day with 410 yards in total offense while IUP was held to 298 yards. Edinboro's total would have been higher but the Scots lost 28 yards while in the victory formation following Fabor's interception.

Girvin completed 14 of 27 passes for a season-high 262 yards with 3 TDs, adding 25 yards rushing. Massey, a redshirt freshman, also enjoyed the finest game of his young career with six receptions for 117 yards and 2 TDs. Eisel added four catches for 93 yards. Donaldson carried 24 times for 79 yards.

Williams paced IUP with 129 yards on 29 carries, as IUP finished with 186 yards rushing. The Crimson Hawks managed just 110 yards through the air as Box and Weaver combined to complete 11 of 26 passes with three interceptions. Barnes caught seven passes for 82 yards.

The defensive heroes were many. Shansky led the way with eight tackles, two for losses. Mike Hanhauser added seven stops while starting at strong safety in place of Veuntrae Robinson. Fabor had six tackles and the interception, and Ghafoor finished with five tackles, two interceptions and a blocked punt.

The going doesn't get any easier for the Fighting Scots this coming weed, as they return to Sox Harrison Stadium to host Slippery Rock on Saturday, October 26. The Rock possesses the most prolific offense in the PSAC and comes in with a 6-1 record following a 34-13 win over Clarion on Saturday. Kickoff at Sox Harrison Stadium is set for 12 noon.
