Fighting Scots Win One, Lose One in Saturday PSAC Crossover

(October 19, 2013) – Going into the day, the Edinboro volleyball team faced a tough test having to play the top two teams in the PSAC East. The Fighting Scots passed that test, narrowly losing to Shippensburg 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 9-15) and defeating Pitt-Johnstown 3-1 (28-26, 27-29, 25-18, 25-19). The Fighting Scots are now 15-6 overall and 9-4 in the PSAC.

The first set against Shippensburg was a back and forth affair that saw a game-high ten ties and six lead changes. Ultimately the Fighting Scots lost 25-23, but rebounded by winning the next two sets 25-21 and 25-23. In the fourth and fifth sets, Edinboro only held the lead once in each set, dropping the final two sets by scores of 25-15 and 15-9.

Marah Maycock tied her career-high of 20 kills in the match. She had previously done it last year against Notre Dame (Ohio). Maria Concheck contributed six block assists, her second highest total of the season. For Shippensburg, freshman Maura Nolan had a career-high 53 assists.

Against Pitt-Johnstown, the Fighting Scots received a strong performance from Tabitha Meeks, who registered her most kills this season with 20 and her second most all-time (25 against Ursuline last year). The first two sets were close matches that saw a combined 28 ties and 11 lead changes. In the fourth and final set, Edinboro cruised to victory, as the scored was only tied once and the Fighting Scots never lost the lead. Katie Felix finished with 43 assists, the eighth time this season she has 40 assists or more.

The Fighting Scots return home on Tuesday, October 22 when they face Point Park. The match is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 p.m. as Edinboro will be hosting a non-conference opponent that has lost three straight matches.
