(Oct. 4, 2013) – The Edinboro and Gannon volleyball teams renewed their rivalry on Friday night at McComb Fieldhouse, and the two local rivals played a classic. The home opener for Edinboro after 16 straight matches on the road found the Fighting Scots rallying for a five-game win. Edinboro prevailed by scores of 22-25, 25-13, 17-25, 26-24, 15-11 to improve to 12-5 overall and 5-0 in the PSAC West. The victory leaves the Fighting Scots with one more win than they had in 2012. The loss was the first in PSAC action for Gannon as the Golden Knights are now 4-1 in league play and 9-5 overall.
Gannon was one point away from winning the fourth game, leading 24-23. Gannon's serve would go out to tie the match, and the Scots would take the lead on a block by
Marah Maycock and
Latoya Hutchinson. Edinboro would win the next point to claim a 26-24 victory.
The fifth game went back and forth, with neither team leading by more than two points until Edinboro took control late. Trailing 11-10, the Fighting Scots ran off the final four points of the match to the thrill of a Homecoming weekend crowd.
Megan Branchick evened the match with a kill, then followed with a service ace. After a Gannon hitting error,
Katie Felix' kill left the Scots with a 14-11 lead. Edinboro would win on a Maycock kill.
Branchick paced the Boro with 20 kills, the lone player in double figures. She also had five block assists. Felix totaled 43 assists.
Haley Marett had a team-high 15 digs, while
Tabitha Meeks totaled 12 and Maycock 10.
Maria Concheck led a strong showing at the net with seven block assists.
Edinboro has little time to enjoy the win. The Fighting Scots host Mercyhurst in another PSAC West match on Saturday. The action gets underway at 6 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
