EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2013) – Edinboro ran for a season-high 226 yards to celebrate Homecoming with a 31-6 victory over Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium. The PSAC crossover win gave the Fighting Scots a two-game winning streak and a 3-2 overall record. Lock Haven, enjoying one of its best starts in years, fell to 2-3.

Jeremy Donaldson paced the ground game with his third straight strong effort. The sophomore ran for a career-high 144 yards on 16 carries. It was capped by a 62-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter. He had finished with a career-high 89 yards in each of the last two games.

While Donaldson paced the offense, the defense featured strong efforts from Devin Ghafoor and Bobby Kmetz. Edinboro limited the Bald Eagles to 253 total yards, including just 68 in the second half. Ghafoor, a junior cornerback, contributed in a variety of ways, blocking a field goal, intercepting a pass, and even recording a sack. He ended the day with six tackles and a pair of passes broken up. Kmetz, a senior defensive end, added eight tackles and had 1.5 tackles for losses.

Ghafoor INT
Lock Haven took the opening kickoff and surprised the Fighting Scots with a 12-play drive that carried down to the Edinboro five. The Boro defense would hold the Bald Eagles and force a 22-yard field goal attempt by Alex Bourmerhi. Ghafoor swooped in and blocked the attempt, with the Scots taking over at the 16.

They would proceed to go 84 yards on 14 plays in an impressive march directed by redshirt freshman Jon Girvin. He completed six of seven attempts on the drive for 46 yards, and added 13 yards rushing. The final four yards came on a read option play in which he burst up the middle for the touchdown. Mike Simons' first of four extra points made it 7-0 with 3:58 left in the first quarter.

Sheppard TD run
Lock Haven answered with another impressive drive, and this time the Bald Eagles reached paydirt. They would convert three times on third down, the last accounting for 41 yards on a pass from Dillon Mazzoni to James Wilbern. The 75-yard drive ended with 14:11 left in the second quarter, but Boumerhi's extra point was wide right and Edinboro led 7-6.

The Fighting Scots would score ten more points in the second quarter to take a 17-6 lead at the half. The first score came courtesy of Ghafoor's interception, which he returned 38 yards to the Lock Haven 16. Three plays netted just three yards, but Simons' came in and converted on a 30-yard field goal attempt. It marked the first career field goal for the sophomore.

Edinboro turned another Lock Haven miscue into a touchdown later in the second quarter. A Brad West punt was muffed, with Edinboro freshman Victor Hudson recovering at the LHU 33. A pass interference call against the Bald Eagles eventually gave the Scots a first down at the two. Enter freshman quarterback Cameron Sheppard, who scored on a two-yard run on his first collegiate play. The touchdown with 4:09 remaining gave the Scots the 17-6 halftime advantage.

Robinson INT
Donaldson's long run just as the people were settling into their seats to start the second half gave the Scots a 24-6 lead. On a 3rd-and-1 play, the sophomore tailback burst up the middle and outran a Lock Haven defender to complete a 62-yard scoring run.

Lock Haven had one good opportunity to score in the second half, but that was snuffed out when Veuntrae Robinson intercepted a Mazzoni pass in the end zone late in the third quarter.

That pickoff led to Edinboro's final score. The Fighting Scots put together a 14-play, 80-yard drive that took 6 minutes, 43 seconds. Sheppard directed the march, completing a 16-yard pass to Ben Eisel on a 4th-and-9 play to give the Scots a first down at the LHU 13. Two plays later Johnny Washington scored on a 10-yard run with 8:29 remaining for the game's final points.

Girvin made his second career start and completed 10 of 20 passes for 91 yards. He threw a meaningless touchdown on a Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half. Sheppard completed 2 of 5 passes for 27 yards and ran for 22 yards on 11 carries.

Brandon Brader led Lock Haven with 97 yards rushing on 20 carries. Mazzoni completed 9 of 22 passes for 121 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

In addition to Ghafoor and Kmetz, Delano Fabor enjoyed a strong game defensively with a career-high 12 tackles, and Brandon Marlow added eight stops.

Edinboro is back in action next Saturday, October 12 making the short trip up I79 to play local rival Gannon. Kickoff is set for 12 noon.
