St. Bonaventure Rides Strong Second Half to Defeat Edinboro, 65-43

OLEAN, N.Y. (November 2, 2013) – After a competitive first twenty minutes of action, the Edinboro women's basketball team could not keep pace with Division I St. Bonaventure and lost 65-43. The Bonnies outscored the Fighting Scots 33-18 in the second half of the exhibition game.

Valerie Majewski opened up the game and her Edinboro career by hitting a three to give the Scots an early lead. St. Bonaventure would then go on a 7-0 run, but the Scots would answer with five straight points from Aignee Freeland to get a one-point lead.

Following the 8-7 lead for Edinboro, St. Bonaventure went on an 11-3 run to establish a 19-10 lead. The Fighting Scots were able to narrow the gap to a 23-20. A back and forth battle for the remainder of the first half came to a conclusion as Imani Outlaw hit a jumper as the buzzer sounded to give the Bonnies a 32-25 halftime lead.

At halftime, Katie Healy led all scorers with 13 points. Hannah Little and Nyla Rueter each led the way with five rebounds. Five different players were tied with two assists, three of them from Edinboro. Freeland and Laurel Lindsay led the Scots with 5 points at halftime. The Fighting Scots only shot 28.1 percent in the first half, while the Bonnies shot 54.2 percent from the field.

After Edinboro opened the second half with a three-pointer to close it to 32-28, the Bonnies went on a 14-0 run led by Little, as she scored eight of those points. The Fighting Scots went over six minutes without a basket before Katie Collins hit a three-pointer to end the run. Edinboro failed to overcome the deficit and lost 65-43.

Little end up with 16 points, 12 of those coming in the second half. The Fighting Scots were only able to muster 18 second half points, as they shot 25 percent from the floor during the final 20 minutes. Edinboro held the edge in rebounding for the game 36-35, but were outrebounded 21-10 in the second half. The Bonnies shot 53.5 percent from the floor while the Scots only converted 26.9 percent of their shots. St. Bonaventure also drastically outscored Edinboro in the paint 44-10, which was a key to the final result.

Healy finished the game as the leading scorer with 17 points. Rueter contributed 15 points and the leading scorer for the Fighting Scots was Laurel Lindsay with 11 points. Little also led the game in rebounding, as she nearly had a double-double after pulling in eight rebounds. Three Fighting Scots led the team with five rebounds, including Lindsay who also led the team with three assists.

Edinboro will return to action on November 19 when they host Urbana for their regular season opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
