Freeland Dominates Again, Boro Knocks off Pitt-Johnstown 91-80

(November 23, 2013) – Following another first half deficit, the Edinboro women's basketball team relied on a strong second half to defeat Pitt-Johnstown 91-80. Aignee' Freeland recorded a double-double for the second time in as many games to propel the Fighting Scots an opening victory in the PSAC West and now have a 2-0 overall record and 1-0 conference record. The Lady Cats fall to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC West.

After the two teams traded points to open the game, the Fighting Scots went on an 11-2 run to establish an early 13-5 lead. With the score later at 24-16, Pitt-Johnstown pieced together a 7-0 run to make it a one point game. After Edinboro was able to get a lay-up and free throw from Laurel Lindsay, the Lady Cats went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead since the 18:46 mark, a span of 13 minutes and four seconds. The Scots were able to come back and take the lead with 39 seconds left after a Hope Mancini three-pointer, but Pitt-Johnstown received a three from Nicole Carman with 15 seconds to go to give the Lady Cats a 39-38 halftime lead.

At the break, Mancini led the Fighting Scots with eight points while Freeland had eight rebounds. Kayla DeCriscio led all scorers with 11 points while also contributing five rebounds and four assists and Carman had 10 points, six rebounds, and two assists off the bench. The two teams were dead even in shooting percentage (41.7 percent) and rebounds (22) at the break.
Pitt-Johnstown was able to extend its lead in the first six minutes of the second half by pushing the lead to six, the game-high for the Lady Cats. The Fighting Scots responded with a 19-1 run to establish a 65-55 lead. Pitt-Johnstown refused to go away quietly though and in what had been largely a game of runs to this point, the Lady Cats 13-2 run to once against take a one-point lead, 68-67 with 6:07 remaining in the game. That would be the last time UPJ would lead in the game, as Edinboro would outscore them 24-12 to close out the game.

The Fighting Scots received several strong performances in the game, most notably Freeland's fourth career double-double. Lindsay scored 16 points, the tying the second most of her career while also contributing seven rebounds and five assists. Katie Collins also scored in double-figures and posted a career-high of 15 points. Mancini finished with 13 points in her second career start, which gives her back-to-back games scoring in double-figures for the first time in her career.

Jasmine Harper finished as the leading scorer for the Lady Cats and in the game with 21 points. DeCriscio and Carman were unable to continue their strong first halfs, but did each did finish with a double-double. After the two combined for 21 first half points, DeCriscio was the only one of the two able to score in the second half as she hit a three-pointer. The Fighting Scots shot 55.6 percent in the second half and outscored Pitt-Johnstown 56-36 in the paint.

The team does not have long to rest up, as the Fighting Scots will be hosting Winston-Salem State on Monday, November 25. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.

Game Notes:
-Aignee' Freeland's 18 points and 17 rebounds were each the second highest totals of her career. She now has a double-double in both games this season, matching her total from last year and giving her four in her career.
-Freeland's 14 defensive rebounds tied her highest total in a game. She also had four steals, another new career-high.
-In just her second career game, Nicole Johnson topped her rebounds from last game, finishing with six today.
-Valerie Majewski finished the game with 15 points and still leads the team with 18 per game.
