Fighting Scots Receive Strong Performance From Freeland, Defeat Warriors 66-56

(December 18, 2013) - Aignee' Freeland finished with 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds to key a 66-56 victory for the Edinboro women's basketball team on Wednesday night in a PSAC crossover battle with East Stroudsburg. The Fighting Scots improved to 5-2 while East Stroudsburg fell to 5-5.

Leading 38-32 with 13:18 remaining in the game, Edinboro went on a 17-2 over the next six minutes to take a 55-34 lead. During the run, Freeland had four points, two rebounds, one assist, two steals, and one block. Senior guard Katie Collins also contributed four points to 21. They would not relinquish a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

East Stroudsburg would close the gap to 13 points at 59-46 with an 11-2 run propelled by junior guard Ryann Fiascki. Fiascki scored seven of her team-high 15 points during the stretch. The Fighting Scots responded with a 5-1 run with points from Valerie Majewski, Laurel Lindsay, and Lily Hospers to extend the lead back to 17 with 2:07 remaining. The Warriors would outscore the Scots 9-2 to end the game.

Freeland scored 10 second-half points, all in the first ten minutes of the final frame, including scoring the first six points of the half for the Scots. Freeland also shot eight-for-14 from the floor, adding three assists, three steals, and two blocks.

Freshman forward Nicole Johnson scored a career-high 12 points. She shot five-for-eight from the floor and pulled in six rebounds. Collins pitched in with 10 points off the bench on four-for-six shooting and tied her career-high with six rebounds.

Valerie Majewski contributed in a multitude of ways. The junior guard finished with six points, three rebounds, six assists, and five steals before fouling out. The six assists tied her career-high.

Fiascki led the Warriors with 15 points on four-for-eight shooting and six-for-seven on free throws. Freshman forward Allison Howard benefited from an eight-for-11 mark from the charity strike to finish with 14 points. She also pulled in six rebounds.

Junior forward Jessica Martin controlled the first five minutes of the game, scoring 6 points and pulling down five rebounds. Foul trouble caused her to miss most of the first half as she finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Edinboro bench was vital to the game, outscoring the East Stroudsburg bench 22-3. It was the second-highest mark the Fighting Scots bench scored this season. The Fighting Scots also won the turnover battle, forcing 29 turnovers while only committing 13, leading to a 26-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Fighting Scots will now have a few days off before traveling to West Chester. The PSAC crossover game is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 21 in Hollinger Field House.

Game Notes: Lauren Hippo scored a season-high 8 points… Katie Collins had her third double-figure scoring game this season. She only had one going into this season… Collins also had six rebounds, a season-high and tying a career-high which she set during the 2011-12 season versus Millersville…
