Edinboro Looks to Continue Streak at West Chester

EDINBORO, Pa. (December 20, 2013) – The Edinboro women's basketball team will look to extend a five-game winning streak over West Chester when the Fighting Scots travel to Hollinger Fieldhouse on Saturday, December 21. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. The contest is the last before Edinboro breaks for Christmas, returning to the hardcourt on December 31 at Winston-Salem State.

Edinboro comes in with a 5-2 record after posting a 66-56 win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots forced 29 turnovers which led to a 26-10 advantage in points off turnovers. Aignee' Freeland led the Fighting Scots with 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. The sophomore added three steals and a pair of blocked shots. Freshman Nicole Johnson chipped in with a season-high 12 points, while Katie Collins came off the bench to contribute 10 points and six rebounds.

West Chester improved to 7-3 the same day with an 84-71 win at Slippery Rock. The victory came a day after the Golden Rams saw a five-game winning streak snapped with a loss at California(Pa.). Dallas Ely paced the Rams with 28 points, making 5 of 14 3-pointers. Brittany Sicinski added 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Fighting Scots have four players scoring in double figures, led by Freeland at 14.6 ppg. The 6'3' center adds 9.4 rpg. and is shooting 56.1 percent from the floor. Hope Mancini adds 14.1 ppg. and has made 20 of 53 3-pointers, along with 22 assists. Valerie Majewski averages 13.3 ppg. and leads the team both in assists (29) and steals (18). Laurel Lindsay is the final player in double digits at 12.6 ppg., adding 5.3 rpg., with 24 assists.

Collins, Katie
Ely, a 5'9" sophomore, leads WCU in scoring at 20.1 ppg., and has made 29 of 84 3-pointers with 29 assists and 23 steals. Sicinski contributes 16.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. The 5'10" sophomore also has a team-high 40 assists and is second in steals with 26. Junior forward Kendall Benovy is a third Ra m in double figures at 12.0 ppg., adding a team-high 7.4 rpg.

The Edinboro-West Chester matchup features two of the winningest coaches in Division II. Stan Swank is in his 27th season at Edinboro and has a 471-270 career. WCU's Deidre Kane is 420-292 and is in her 26th year as the Rams' head coach. The two represent the longest-tenured coaches in the PSAC.

A year ago Edinboro claimed a 76-68 win at McComb Fieldhouse after trailing West Chester by 23 points in the first half. The Fighting Scots ended the game on a 17-2 run. Samantha Blazetic led the Scots with 20 points, adding 14 rebounds. Kiara Brown and Lindsay had 14 points apiece, and Darche' Jackson contributed 13 points. Ely led West Chester with 15 markers.

Edinboro holds a 14-5 lead in the all-time series.
