Fighting Scots Fall 76-73 at West Chester Despite Freeland’s Double-Double

(December 21, 2013) – Aignee' Freeland posted her fourth double-double of the season but the Edinboro women's basketball team could not prevail on the road, losing 76-73 at West Chester on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC crossover contest. Freeland finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds as the Fighting Scots dropped to 5-3, while the Golden Rams improved to 8-3.

The Fighting Scots trailed the entire first half and were still down 38-33 early in the second half before going on a 10-2 run. Senior guard Darche' Jackson's 3-pointer gave Edinboro its first lead at 40-38 at the 17:35 mark.

West Chester would answer with a 14-0 run later in the half.  Trailing 54-49 with 12:51 remaining, WCU held Edinboro scoreless for the next 4 minutes and 25 seconds. Junior forward Kendall Benovy scored six points during the run. Freshman forward Maggie Moore finally ended the run when she hit a lay-up with 7:26 on the clock.

That would lead to a 13-3 run by the Scots, as they took a 67-66 lead with 4:56 to go, capped by junior forward Laurel Lindsay's back-to-back 3-pointers. Lindsay had eight points during the run.

Edinboro held a narrow 71-70 lead with 3:25 to go, but they would run into another drought, this time failing to score for over three minutes.  West Chester would grab a 75-71 lead as Benovy hit a pair of free throws and sophomore guard Dallas Ely scored on a layup.

Freeland scored with 20 seconds to go to close the deficit to two points at 75-73. Ely made the first of two free throws to give West Chester a 76-73 lead. Jackson 3-point attempt for the Scots was blocked by Brittany Sicinski. Edinboro gathered in the rebound but Serifat Junaid would steal the ball to close out the win.

Freeland's 24 points came on a 12-for-20 effort from the floor.  She added a season-high three blocks. Junior guard Valerie Majewski finished with 14 points, going 4-for-10 from beyond the 3-point arc. She added five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Jackson was vital off the bench for the Scots. In only her second game of the season, she had six points, 12 assists, four rebounds, and three steals in 31 minutes of action.

For West Chester, Sicinski finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, and six assists while Ely had 18 points and nine rebounds. The Golden Rams had four players score in double-digits as Benovy also scored 18 points and sophomore forward Anna Kuntz had 10 points.

West Chester took advantage of a huge disparity at the free throw line.  The Golden rams made 17 of 30 free throws while Edinboro was just 3 of 6.  Edinboro stayed in the game thanks to a strong long distance shooting performance. The Fighting Scots made 10 of 29 3-pointers, including 8-for-18 in the second half, while WCU was just 3 of 14.

Edinboro will travel to North Carolina to take on Winston-Salem State in a New Year's Eve matinee. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C. in a rematch from earlier this season in which the Lady Rams won 56-55 at McComb Fieldhouse.
