WINSTON-SALEM, NC (December 31, 2013)– The Edinboro women's basketball team celebrated the New Year a few hours early with a 62-56 win at Winston-Salem State on Tuesday afternoon at the C.E. Gaines Center. The victory avenged an earlier 59-58 loss to the Lady Rams at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro enters 2014 with a 6-3 record while Winston-Salem State fell to 6-4.
Leading 26-25 at the half, Edinboro would take a three-point lead on
Valerie Majewski's jumper to open the second half. Winston-Salem State went on its second 9-0 run of the game to take its biggest lead at six points, 34-28, with 16:42 to play on a layup by Jasmine Elum.
Edinboro responded with back-to-back 3-pointers by
Laurel Lindsay and
Hope Mancini to knot the score at 34-34. A traditional 3-point play by Dionna Scot gave the Lady Rams, a three-point lead at 37-34, but it would be the last time they would lead.
A
Valerie Majewski jumper and a free throw by
Aignee' Freeland tied the game, and the Fighting Scots never trailed again following Majewski's layup with 12:26 to play at 39-37.
While Edinboro would not trail again, the Scots could not pull away from the Lady Rams. In fact, the game would be tied on two more occasions, the last at 49-49 with 5:30 to play.
Darche' Jackson's layup gave Edinboro the lead for good, and Majewski converted a 3-point play to give the Scots a 54-49 advantage with 3:17 remaining.
Winston-Salem State made on last run, closing to 54-52 with 2:42 to play on two Amanda Hairston free throws, but Edinboro went on an 8-1 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 62-53 with 30 seconds remaining. Lindsay scored five points and
Morgyn Patterson had the other three.
Majewski led the Fighting Scots with 19 points, her highest total since a 21-point effort to open the season. The junior guard added five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Lindsay finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Mancini contributed 12 points and three steals off the bench.
Patterson also turned in a strong showing off the bench as Freeland, Edinboro's leading scorer and rebounder, battled foul trouble all day and played just 21 minutes before fouling out. The senior had a season-high nine points.
Hairston led the Lady Rams with 17 points, and Elum was also in double figures with 12.
After shooting just 33.3 percent in the first half, Edinboro made 13 of 27 shots in the second half (48.1 pct.) to finish the day at 40.7 percent. That included a 6-for-14 chart on 3-pointers. Winston-Salem State shot 38.0 percent for the game but made just 1 of 11 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
Edinboro struggled with ballhandling in the first half, turning the ball over 12 times, but would commit just six miscues in the second half. In the meantime, the Fighting Scots forced 13 second-half turnovers as the Lady Rams turned the ball over 21 times. That led to a 22-15 advantage for the Fighting Scots in points off turnovers. Both teams finished with 35 rebounds.
Edinboro will tip off 2014 with a pair of PSAC crossover contests this weekend. On Friday, January 3 the Fighting Scots play at Cheyney, followed by another game on Saturday, January 4 at Millersville. Both games tip off at 1 p.m.
