Aignee' Freeland led the Fighting Scots to a 81-70 win against California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center. Edinboro was able to avenge its loss from last season to Cal in the NCAA Tournament (80-72) that ended their season. Freeland scored a career-high 31 points on 15 of 22 shooting (68.2 percent), topping her previous career-high of 20 points which she set against the Vulcans last year. She also registered her third double-double of the year, finishing with 10 rebounds, and 19 of her 31 points came in the second half. Edinboro shot 58.8 percent on 20 of 34 shooting in the second half whereas the Vulcans only shot 33.3 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Scots are now 4-1 overall, 3-0 in the PSAC West while Cal drops to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC West.
The Vulcans cut the Fighting Scots lead to 37-35 just under two minutes into the second half. Edinboro responded with a 7-0 run, with five of those points coming from
Hope Mancini. Kaitlynn Fratz ended the Scots run with a 3-pointer and her nine points in the first 6:16 of the second half kept the game close. With 11:16 remaining in the game, Edinboro was ahead 51-47 and then went on a 10-0 run.
Katie Collins scored half the points during that run. The Fighting Scots would not allow Cal to comeback from there, as they led by at least nine points the rest of the way.
In the first half, Edinboro led 35-30. Freeland was already near a double-double at that point with 12 points and seven rebounds. Fratz had eight points off the bench to that point. The Scots outrebounded the Vulcans 25-13 in the first 20 minutes of action.
Edinboro never trailed in the game, leading for 98.5 percent of it. Freeland recorded her fifth career double-double. She opened the season with back-to-back double-doubles in victories against Urbana (81-64) and Pitt-Johnstown (91-80). Four other Fighting Scots scored in double-digits. Mancini has scored double-digits in all five games this year, finishing with 12 points. The senior guard was coming off a career-high 31 points against Seton Hill.
Valerie Majewski scored 12 points as this marks her fifth time in double-digits this year as well. The junior guard also contributed three rebounds and a game-high six assists.
Laurel Lindsay also tallied six assists, and finished with nine points and seven rebounds. It was the eighth consecutive game the junior guard has scored at least nine points. Collins ended with 13 points, the second highest of her career.
Nicole Johnson continued her strong freshman campaign, as she recorded four points and a career-high eight rebounds.
California (Pa.) was led in scoring by Fratz. The junior guard was key off the bench for the Vulcans, as she finished with a career-high 26 points. Elena Antonenko finished the game with a double-double, as the Russian scored 14 points, hauled in 11 rebounds, five of which were offensive.
The Fighting Scots finished the game shooting 50.7 percent from the field, its highest percentage of the year. The Scots also held the Vulcans to only 38.6 percent from the floor, the lowest mark an opposing team has had against them. Cal shot 48 percent in the first half, but could not continue to shoot at that clip in the second half. They finished the game two of 18 on 3-pointers. The Scots outscored the Vulcans 29-7 on second chance points. Due to Fratz's performance off the bench, the Vulcans were outscored Edinboro 54-13 off the bench.
Edinboro returns to action on December 17 when they host Bloomsburg. The game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
