#21 Edinboro (17-5, 14-4 PSAC) at Slippery Rock (4-18, 3-15 PSAC)
STORYLINE
No. 21 Edinboro (17-5, 14-4 PSAC) will go for the season sweep of Slippery Rock (4-18, 3-15) on Saturday afternoon as the Scots play the second of three straight road contests. With four games remaining in the regular season, Edinboro holds a one game edge over Indiana (Pa.) for second in the PSAC West standings after the Scots lost at Gannon on Wednesday while IUP won in overtime vs. California (Pa.).
SCOUTING SLIPPERY ROCK
The Rock will try to snap a nine-game losing streak on Saturday. One of those losses was at Edinboro, 72-59, on Jan. 24. Slippery Rock has been competitive in many of those games, holding close with Edinboro until the very end in the first meeting between squads. In their last two times out, The Rock has come up just short at Mercyhurst (80-72) and was tied late with Lock Haven on Wednesday before falling, 90-86. The Rock has played much better on its home floor this season as it has posted all four of its victories at home with a 4-7 overall record at Morrow Fieldhouse while slumping to 0-11 on the road. Senior guard Erinne Cunningham leads The Rock at 12.0 points per game while junior guard Alexas Brown (9.9 ppg) and sophomore forward D'Asia Chambers (9.4 ppg), a former St. Bonaventure recruit from Sharon, Pa., also add scoring threats.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE ROCK
Slippery Rock leads, 51-39
Edinboro owns the last seven victories in the series and will attempt for its fourth consecutive season sweep. Last year, the Fighting Scots held The Rock under 40 points in both games, scoring a 68-37 win at SRU on Jan. 21, 2012 before registering a 62-39 victory on Feb. 11 at McComb Fieldhouse. Slippery Rock's last win in the series came on Feb. 14, 2009 at Edinboro in a 73-64 decision.
WHEN LAST WE MET
Slippery Rock proved to be a pesky foe in the first meeting before Edinboro rallied for a 72-59 victory. After struggling to pull away for much of the day, Edinboro outscored Slippery Rock 26-13 over the final 10:18 to establish control. Seniors
Samantha Blazetic and
Kiara Brown each tallied 20 points to key the Fighting Scots. The two squads shared 10 ties and exchanged the lead on 11 occasions as The Rock proved to be a pesky foe. The Fighting Scots took a narrow, 28-27 lead into halftime and found themselves down by four (36-32) following an Alexas Brown jumper with 16:26 to play. The Fighting Scots grabbed the game's final lead change with 10:18 remaining on a trey from Brown, who scored five straight points to give Edinboro its first bit of breathing room. A 12-3 run by the Scots over a three-and-a-half minute span broke the game open.
LAST TIME OUT
A double digit first half lead wouldn't hold as Edinboro fell at No. 10 Gannon, 71-62, on Wednesday.
Samantha Blazetic led Edinboro (17-5, 14-4 PSAC) with 22 points as one of three Fighting Scots in double figures.
Kiara Brown and
Darche' Jackson both recorded 17 points for Edinboro. Edinboro led for the entire first half, breaking away by as many as 12 points during the opening stanza. Gannon outscored the Boro 11-4 over the final 2:54 of the period, though, and the Scots' lead was just five at 32-27 at the break. After Gannon roared back for a 61-52 lead with 4:40 to play, the Scots charged back with one last rally attempt led by Brown. The senior charged the attack with two quick steals, leading to four points in a 30-second span as the Boro brought the score to 64-60 and 2:32 left. A Gannon turnover gave the ball back to the Scots with a chance to draw to within one possession. A missed shot led to Jen Papich putting home a running one-hander on the other end and she completed the 3-point play following a foul for a 67-60 lead with 1:36 left, putting the exclamation point on the Knights' rebound.
DON'T TURN AWAY CHARITY
Edinboro shot a season-best 94.4 percent from the free throw line (17-of-18) on Wednesday at Gannon. Junior
Darche' Jackson led the Scots by shooting 6-of-6 at the line, a new career-best.
PROTECT THE PERIMETER
The Fighting Scots entered Wednesday's game at Gannon limiting their opponents to 26.5 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc for the season season, the lowest total of any team in the PSAC. Gannon broke that trend, however, shooting 6-of-11 from long range (54.5 percent), and the Scots now stand fourth in the conference in 3-point field goal defense. Edinboro has surrendered 83 3-pointers to opponents, third-lowest in the PSAC, and have held opposing teams without single 3-pointer in five separate games.
ONE IS NOT A STREAK
Edinboro will attempt to keep an impressive streak alive as it travels to Slippery Rock on Saturday. It has been nearly three years exactly since the Scots suffered consecutive losses. Edinboro has not lost back-to-back games since February 2010 when it lost three straight between Feb. 17-24, 2010.
BETTER THAN THE RANKINGS
Edinboro ranks seventh in the PSAC in defense, allowing 60.7 ppg. After allowing 72 ppg through the first four games of the year, Boro opponents have averaged just 57.1 ppg in the 18 games since, a total that would rank second in the PSAC over the full season. Gannon's 71 points on Wednesday represent the first time an opponent has scored 70 or more vs. Edinboro since Wayne State did so in a 77-74 Scots win on Nov. 24.
