Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO (Feb. 6, 2013) – The Edinboro women's basketball team trailed at halftime in Wednesday's key PSAC West battle with visiting California (Pa.), but the memories of a ragged first half were erased as the Fighting Scots (16-4, 13-3 PSAC) launched into a 21-6 run to open the second period and ran away for a 60-41 victory at McComb Fieldhouse.
The two squads combined for 27 turnovers during the first half and the Vulcans (14-6, 10-6) were able to take a slim 24-22 lead into the break behind 10 points from Irina Kukolj. The second half belonged to Edinboro, however, and in particular senior
Kiara Brown.
Brown, who played for Cal during her freshman season before transferring to Edinboro, continued her reign of dominance against her former mates by pouring in a game-high 24 points, 16 of which came after halftime.
Aignee Freeland opened the second stanza scoring with a layup to tie the game at 24-all and the lead was soon in the possession of the Boro following a pair of shots from the line by Brown. The All-American guard put her skill set on full display as the Scots seized control, sinking 15-footers and continually driving to the hoop to help Edinboro pull away.
By the time Brown and
Bobbi Baker combined for back-to-back fast break lay-ins, following strong defensive plays by both – a steal by Brown and a block from Baker – Edinboro had taken a 43-30 advantage with 9:15 to play and never saw its lead dwindle to single digits again.
The Fighting Scots held Cal to a frosty 19 percent (12-of-63) shooting for the game, including a miniscule 11.8 percent (4-34) during the second half. Although Cal entered the game shooting better than 39 percent for the year, it was the second straight time Edinboro held the Vulcans without an answer offensively as Cal shot 26.2 percent (16-61) in the first meeting between the schools on Dec. 8, the previous season-low by a Boro opponent before Wednesday.
Edinboro also dominated in points in the paint, outscoring the Vulcans by a 38-12 margin close to the basket.
Samantha Blazetic finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals for Edinboro while Freeland tallied 10 points, nine boards and tied her career-high of four blocks. Baker again was a jolt of energy off the bench, excelling defensively in 21 minutes of action.
Cal placed two players in double figure scoring – Kukolj had 12 points and Emma Mahady added 10 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
Edinboro shot 46.2 percent for the game (24-52), but was an impressive 54.2 percent (13-24) during the second half. The Vulcans won the battle of the boards, 45-38, including 25 offensive rebounds. The Boro shot a season-best 91.7 percent at the line, sinking 11 of 12 attempts.
The Fighting Scots return to action on Saturday against Lock Haven as part of Fighting Scots Fighting Cancer Weekend. The action tips off at McComb Fieldhouse at 1 p.m.
