(April 16, 2013) – The Edinboro women's lacrosse team tied its record for wins in a season on Tuesday afternoon with a 17-2 win over Wheeling Jesuit at foggy Sox Harrison Stadium. Nine different players scored goals as Edinboro improved to 7-6, the first time the Fighting Scots have been above .500 this late in the season. Wheeling Jesuit, members of the GLIAC in women's lacrosse, fell to 5-9.
The seven wins ties the school record set by last year's team, which finished 7-10 under head coach
Kevin Cooke. This marks the fifth year of women's lacrosse at Edinboro. The Fighting Scots have four matches remaining, including a home game with Bloomsburg on Friday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
Edinboro jumped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to goals by
Rebecca Zajac, Alexandria DeReamer and
Anna Purdy. The Cardinals got on the board thanks to Jessie Tufnell's 34
th goal of the season, but Edinboro answered with three more goals, including the first of the season for
Alayna Davis.
Wheeling Jesuit scored to make it 6-2 with 12:48 to play in the first half, but that would be the last times the Cardinals dented the net. Edinboro would go on to score the final 11 goals of the game. The Fighting Scots led 12-2 at the half and then outscored Wheeling Jesuit, 5-0, over the final thirty minutes.
Katie Magee and Purdy led Edinboro with three goals apece, while Davis and DeReamer had two goals and an assist and
Shannon Rohrich and
Stephannie Niell scored twice.
Rebecca Martin contributed a goal and three assists, with
Rebecca Zajac adding a goal and an assist and
Jenny Wirth scoring a goal.
Molly Campion had two assists.
Edinboro outshot Wheeling Jesuit 34-9, with freshman goalkeeper Autumn held finishing with four saves.
