Valerie Majewski,
Laurel Lindsay, and
Darche' Jackson in a PSAC West match-up against Slippery Rock, leading the team to a 83-75 victory on Saturday afternoon. It was the Fighting Scots fifth victory in a row. Their record is now 10-3 and 4-0 in the PSAC West while Slippery Rock fell to 3-12 and 0-5 in conference.
Coming of a triple-double and career-high in scoring versus Shippensburg, Majewski posted a new career-high in scoring, finishing with 27 points. Majewski was hot in the first half. The junior guard had 21 points on 8-for-13 from the floor, including 5-for-8 on 3-pointers.
Lindsay came into the game with three points total in the past two games. She snapped out of her recent woes with her second career double-double and a career-high scoring, as she had 19 points, ten rebounds, and also led the team with seven assists. The ten rebounds and seven assists were also season-highs. The junior guard/forward also had a good first half, scoring 15 points in the first 20 minutes on 5-for-8 shooting.
Jackson finished with 13 points, nine of which came in the second half. The senior guard was coming off a season-high 15 points. Jackson also added three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Despite the efficient shooting of Majewski and Lindsay, The Rock shot a better percentage in the first half. They finished the first half shooting 60 percent while the Fighting Scots shot 56.3 percent. Erica Aiello and D'Asia Chambers combined for 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting.
Trailing 48-39 to begin the second half, Slippery Rock went on a 10-4 run. This cut the Scots lead down to three points as the score was 52-49 with 16:06 remaining. Aidan Geise hit two 3-pointers during the run.
The Fighting Scots immediately responded with a 9-0 run to establish a 12-point lead. Shortly after, Edinboro led 64-52 with 12:08 to go. The Rock then pieced together a 12-3 run from the 11:51 mark to 7:46 to cut the lead to 3 points again, 67-64.
Majewski hit a 3-pointer with 6:55 to play to end the run, her first 3-pointer of the second half and first 3-pointer made in her last five attempts. The Scots would continue to maintain the lead the rest of the way, building it to as high as ten with 21 seconds left.
In addition to the trio of Jackson, Lindsay, and Majewski, sophomore forward
Aignee' Freeland neared a double-double, concluding with nine points and eight rebounds. Off the bench, freshman forward
Nicole Johnson scored three points and tied a game-high with three steals and senior guard
Hope Mancini contributed nine points on 3-for-5 shooting.
Chambers led Slippery Rock with 30 points on 12-for-18 shooting. Geise had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Scots did not allow Aiello to score once in the second half, as she finished with ten points and five assists.
The Rock finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the floor while the Fighting Scots finished at 46.9 percent. It was only the second time this season that the Scots allowed an opposing team to shoot over 50 percent. The other was an 84-71 loss to Bloomsburg.
Edinboro shot 50 percent on 3-pointers compared to just 35.7 percent for The Rock. It was the second time this season that the Scots hit at least 50 percent of their 3-pointers, shooting 52.9 percent from distance in a 74-67 win at Millersville.
Edinboro won the turnover battle, forcing 18 Slippery Rock turnovers while only turning it over 12 times. The Scots are now 9-0 when they commit fewer turnovers than the opposing team.
The Fighting Scots will go back on the road next Wednesday, January 15 as they travel to take on Mercyhurst in another PSAC West contest. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
