Fighting Scots Make Short Trip to Mercyhurst to Face Upset-Minded Lakers

STORYLINE
Mercyhurst hosts Edinboro Wednesday night with both teams coming off monumental weeks. The Lakers are 4-10 and improved to 2-2 in the PSAC while the Fighting Scots are 10-3 and 4-0 in conference while in the midst of a five-game winning streak. Last week, the Scots received the fourth triple-double in school history from Valerie Majewski in a 94-74 win over Shippensburg and followed that with a career-high 27 points as Laurel Lindsay registered her second career double-double in an 83-75 win against Slippery Rock. With a 73-64 victory against No. 20 Indiana (Pa.), it was the Lakers first win over a ranked team since they upset Edinboro during the 2011-12 season. Edinboro was No. 2 in the nation and undefeated going into that game. Entering the season, Edinboro was picked to finish second in the PSAC West while Mercyhurst was picked to finish seventh.

#30 Valerie Majewski (G, 5-7, Jr.) – Majewski was named PSAC West Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week. She had the fourth career triple-double in Fighting Scots history versus Shippensburg with 25 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds. The junior guard followed that with a career-high 27 points against Slippery Rock. She has led the Scots in scoring in all five games during the winning streak and is averaging 22.2 points per game in the last five.

#11 Laurel Lindsay (G/F, 5-11, Jr.) – Shaking her recent woes of three points in the previous two games combined, Laurel Lindsay recorded her second career double-double versus Slippery Rock. She finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

#22 Alayna White (F, 5-11, Sr.) – The team-leader in scoring (15.2 ppg), rebounding (9.4 rpg), and field goal percentage (51.2 percent), Alanya White is having a career-season for Mercy­hurst. The senior had a double-double in the Lak­ers upset victory of No. 20 Indiana (Pa.), her second in a row and third in the last four games. She is averaging 17 ppg. and 11.5 rpg. over that stretch.

#11 Adrienne Kloecker (G, 5-6, So.) – Kloecker led the team in scoring during the upset victory of No. 20 Indiana (Pa.) with 23 points. It was her third straight game with at least 20 points. She only played in the first game last season against Edinboro, but was second on the Lakers with nine points.

SCOUTING MERCYHURST
After beginning the season 1-6, Mercyhurst has gone 3-4 since then including winning two of its last three games to put its record at 4-10. The Lakers are coming off an upset of No. 20 Indiana (Pa.). The victory highlighted the Lakers biggest strength - rebounding. Mercyhurst is first in the PSAC and 26th in the nation in rebounding margin at +7.9. The Lakers are one of four confer­ence teams ranked in the bottom eleven in the nation in turnover margin, as they are 15th in the conference and 277th in the nation with a -5.8 turnover margin. Scoring wise, the Lakers are averaging 64.6 points per game (15th in the PSAC) and allowing 67.1 per game (6th in the PSAC). Individually, Mercyhurst is led by Alayna White. The senior forward leads the team in scoring (15.2 ppg) and rebounding (9.4 rpg). She is 12th in the PSAC in scoring and third in rebounding. White is complimented by Adrienne Klocker. The sophomore guard is scoring 14.6 ppg, second on the team and 18th in the conference, and is also second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg. Freshman guard Mariah Penascino plays a significant role off the bench for the Lakers, leading the team with 3.3 apg.

The Fighting Scots have a significant edge in the all-time series and have won seven of the last eight meetings. However, most of that success has come at home. Edinboro is 6-0 since 2007 at home versus Mercyhurst, but 3-3 on the road. The last time the two met, the Fighting Scots won by 38 points at home against the Lakers. Edinboro led at the half 43-14 in that contest. Three Scots finished in double-digits as Samantha Blazetic led the way with 18 points. Kiara Brown added 16 points while Darche' Jackson contributed 14 off the bench on 7-for-11 shooting. Jackson paced the team with three assists while Aignee' Freeland had six points and a game-high seven rebounds. When they met at Mercyhurst last year, the Scots won 63-46 as Brown poured in a game-high 25 points and Blazetic double-doubled with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Edinboro 83, Slippery Rock 75

Following a 20-point victory over Shippensburg (94-74), the Fighting Scots had to fend off a feisty Slippery Rock team, winning 83-75. Edinboro was led by the trio of Valerie Majewski, Laurel Lindsay, and Darche' Jackson. The three combined to score 59 points to lead the Scots to their fifth win in a row. Majewski scored a career-high 27 points, Lindsay had her second career double-double with 19 points (career-high) and 10 rebounds, and Jackson led the team with nine second half points and totaled 13 on the day. Edinboro led 64-52 with 12:08 to go. The Rock then pieced together a 12-3 run from the 11:51 mark to 7:46 to cut the lead to 3 points, 67-64. Majewski hit a 3-pointer with 6:55 to play to end the run, her first 3-pointer of the second half and first 3-pointer made in her last five attempts. The Scots would continue to maintain the lead the rest of the way, building it to as high as ten with 21 seconds left.
 
Mercyhurst 73, Indiana (Pa.) 64
Mercyhurst defeated No. 20 Indiania (Pa.) in the second biggest upset in school history. It was its first win over a ranked team since 2011-12, when they beat No. 2 Edinboro. The Lakers received their second straight double-double from Alayna White with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Adi­enne Kloecker led the team with 23 points. Alex Artise added six points and ten rebounds off the bench, which helped Mercyhurst control the glass, outrebounding the Crimson Hawks 42-26. The Lakers also limited Lindsay Stamp, the PSAC's leading scorer, to just nine points.
