Women's Basketball Team Heads East for PSAC Crossover Games at Cheyney, Millersville

Laurel Lindsay has started every game she has played at Edinboro.
EDINBORO, Pa. (January 2, 2014) – The Edinboro women's basketball team looks to begin 2014 as it ended 2014 – with a win. The Fighting Scots claimed a 62-56 win at Winston-Salem State on New Year's Eve to improve to 6-3. Now they begin the New Year with PSAC Crossover games at Cheyney on Friday, January 3 and at Millersville on Saturday, January 4. Both games get underway at 1 p.m.

Mancini, Hope
Edinboro avenged one of its three losses with the win at Winston-Salem State. Valerie Majewski paced the Fighting Scots with 19 points, while Laurel Lindsay had 13 points and Hope Mancini came off the bench to contribute 12 points.

Aignee' Freeland leads the Fighting Scots both in scoring and rebounding at 14.6 ppg. and 9.2 rpg. The 6'3" sophomore has had an up-and-down campaign with four double-doubles yet three other games where she has been held to five points or less. She is shooting 55.6 percent from the floor (60 of 108) and has a team-high 11 blocks.

Majewski is enjoying a strong first season with the Fighting Scots after transferring from the University at Buffalo. A 5'7" junior, she averages 14.0 points and 4.2 rebounds along with a team-highs of 39 assists and 23 steals.

Lindsay continues to fill up the box score. The 6'0" junior has started all 68 games in her career and averages 12.1 ppg. while ranking second in rebounding (5.2 rpg.) and assists (29).

Mancini continues to be a revelation as a senior. After scoring just 116 points in her first three seasons, she has already scored 114 points and is averaging 12.7 ppg. The 5'8" guard is Edinboro's top 3-point threat with 23 in 61 attempts.

The Edinboro lineup received a boost recently with the return of Darche' Jackson. A former All-PSAC West performer, she sat out the first five games of the year, then returned against Bloomsburg on December 17, only to suffer an injury and miss the next day's game vs. East Stroudsburg. The senior guard returned at West Chester and matched her career high with 12 assists. She is off to a slow start, averaging 3.7 ppg.

Freeland at St. Bona
Cheyney returns to action for the first time since December 21, when the Wolves dropped a 77-66 decision to Slippery Rock for their third straight loss. The Wolves come in with a 1-9 record, with the lone victory a 69-51 win over Mansfield at Cope Hall.

Cheyney has struggled to put points on the scoreboard, scoring less than 50 points on six occasions while averaging 52.8 ppg. Opponents are averaging 74.5 ppg. The Wolves are shooting 37.3 percent from the floor and have made just 27 of 95 3-pointers. In addition, they are averaging 25.3 turnovers per game.

Kyra Hines-Allen is the leading scorer at 10.6 ppg., and also leads the team in rebounding (5.2 rpg.). Hines-Allen is a 5'9" sophomore. Amber Genwright, a 5'3" freshman, adds 9.9 ppg. Kia Whitley-Duncan, a 5'2" junior, has a team-leading 41 assists and 16 steals while averaging 6.0 ppg. Lachelle Miller, a 5'6" senior, is the top 3-point threat with 9 in 27 attempts. She averages 7.3 ppg.

After hosting Slippery Rock on Friday, Millersville will play host to Edinboro on Saturday. The Marauders have traditionally been one of the top teams in the PSAC East under long-time coach Mary Fleig. They are off to a 5-5 start and oddly enough are just 1-3 at Pucillo Gymnasium. However, they own an 80-74 win at Bloomsburg, a team which defeated Edinboro 84-71 at McComb Fieldhouse.

The Marauders feature three players in double figures, led by Carly Gallagher at 13.6 ppg. A 5'9" redshirt junior, she adds 4.5 rpg. and ranks second on the team with 27 assists. Celeste Robinson, a 5'8" sophomore, adds 11.3 ppg. and 6.2 rpg., along with leading the Marauders in assists (32) and steals (20). Seneda Mehmedovic comes in at 10.9 ppg. She is a 5'10" junior.

Shelby Reimer, a 5'6" redshirt sophomore, adds 9.8 ppg. and is the team's top 3-point threat with 21 in 50 attempts. She is the younger sister of Edinboro's all-time leading scorer Samantha Reimer. Yasmin Copper, a 6'2" sophomore, is the leading rebounder (8.1 rpg.) along with averaging 9.7 ppg.
