Davis & Elkins Snaps Edinboro's Nine-Game Winning Streak 70-67

(January 29, 2014) – Stephanie Wooten's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 33 seconds remaining gave Davis & Elkins a 70-67 win over Edinboro on Thursday night at McComb Fieldhouse, snapping the Fighting Scots' nine-game winning streak. Edinboro, which had just moved into the USA TODAY Sports Coaches' Poll at No. 22 this week, fell to 14-4, while the Senators notched their fifth straight win while improving to 9-11.

The contest was close throughout, featuring 12 ties and 19 lead changes that included nine ties and and 13 changes of the lead in the first half alone. Edinboro forged ahead to its biggest lead of the night at 56-47 with 11:37 to play. The lead came courtesy of an 8-2 run, with Nicole Johnson contributing a pair of baskets.

But Davis & Elkins would not go away, clawing all the way back to a 63-63 tie with 4:09 to play on a 3-pointer by Ashley Bowles. Laurel Lindsay's putback off an offensive rebound gave the lead back to the Scots, but Ashley Magallanez tied it at 65-all with the shot clock winding down.

Edinboro would take its last lead of the night at 67-65 with 1:43 to play on Aignee' Freeland's layup. The Scots would not score again, however. D&E came down and missed a three by Bowles, but Magallanez grabbed the offensive rebound and fed Wooten, who hit the game-winner. The redshirt freshman guard added a pair of free throws with 4.1 seconds to play following an Edinboro turnover. Valerie Majewski's long 3-pointer was off the mark just before the buzzer.

While the rebounding was even at 46-46, and Edinboro actually held a 17-16 advantage on the offensive glass, the Senators held a telling 17-8 lead in second chance points.

Aignee Freeland vs. D&E
Edinboro ended the night shooting 38.2 percent from the floor (29 of 76), while Davis & Elkins came in at 38.8 percent (26 of 67). The Senators made 6 of 15 3-pointers and were 12 of 17 from the line, while Edinboro was just 2 of 9 from beyond the arc and went to the line just nine times, making seven.

Freeland posted her third straight double-double and seventh of the season, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but she made just 8 of 23 shots. Lauren Hippo continued her strong play off the bench with 14 points, while Majewski added 13 points and six rebounds.

Laurel Lindsay turned in another typical all-around outing with nine points, eight rebounds and six assists. Darche' Jackson finished with six points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. The senior guard now has 961 career points.

D&E received a pair of double-double efforts, as Jorden Lykes had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Magallanez added 10 points and 11 boards. Wooten came off the bench to score 15 points and dish out seven assists. Bowles was also in double figures with 13 points.

Edinboro returns to PSAC West action on Saturday, February 1, hosting Pitt-Johnstown. That contest gets underway at 1:00 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
