Edinboro Looks to Rebound Versus Pitt-Johnstown on Scots Fighting Cancer Day

STORYLINE
The Edinboro women's basketball team returns to PSAC West play on Saturday, February 1 versus Pitt-Johnstown. The Fighting Scots had pieced together a nine-game winning streak that was snapped by Davis & Elkins on Thursday night, 70-67. The Scots will look to get back to their winning ways beginning second half of PSAC play. Edinboro comes into the game 14-4 overall and 8-0 in the PSAC West while UPJ checks in at 7-12 and 4-5 in conference. The Fighting Scots were picked to finish second in the PSAC West this year while the Lady Cats were picked eighth.
 
FIGHTING SCOTS FIGHTING CANCER DAY 
The Edinboro University athletic department will hold its annual Fighting Scots Fighting Cancer Day on Saturday, February 1.  The men's and women's basketball teams will host Pitt-Johnstown that day in a PSAC West doubleheader. It will be a tripleheader of athletic events, as the wrestling team hosts the University at Buffalo at 7 p.m.  Admission to all three events is free with a donation to the Breast Cancer Society.  The athletic department will work in conjunction with the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.  The sorority will also be accepting donations, along with selling bracelets and passing out ribbons and informational pamphlets about breast cancer.

#13 Aignee' Freeland (F/C, 6-3, So.) - Freeland has rattled off three straight double-doubles. She now has seven on the season and the sophomore forward is averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds in the last three games. She had a double-double the first time these two played (18 points, 17 rebounds).

#11 Laurel Lindsay (G/F, 5-11, Jr.) - Following three straight big games, Lindsay has averaged eight points over the last three games. She averaged 18 the previous three games. The junior guard/forward has continued to stuff the statsheet though, averaging six rebounds and over five assists in the past three games.

#1 Jasmine Harper (F, 6-0, So.) - The WVIAC Freshman of the Year in 2012-13, Jasmine Harper leads the Lady Cats in scoring (13.9 ppg.) and rebounding (8.3 rpg.). The sophomore forward has recorded six double-doubles this season. Earlier this year against Edinboro, Harper led the game with 21 points.
 
#30 Nicole Carman (F, 5-10, Jr.) - Carman only has one start this season, but has been a key player off the bench. The junior forward is third on the team with 11.1 ppg., second in rebounding at 6.6 rpg.,and can also stretch the defense, going 30-for-83 (36.1 percent) on 3-pointers. The Lady Cats are 1-5 this season when Carman scores in single-digits.
 
SCOUTING PITT-JOHNSTOWN
Pitt-Johnstown comes into the game 2-6 over the last eight games. The Lady Cats are coming off an 85-80 overtime loss against Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday night. Mike Drahos is in his first season in charge of Pitt-Johnstown, which is in its first season in the PSAC. Offense has been a strength for UPJ this season, with five players averaging double-digits and ranking sixth in the PSAC in scoring with 74.9 ppg. The Lady Cats shoot a plethora of 3-pointers, ranking first in the conference with 454 attempts, 59 more than the next school (Gannon). Defense has been a different story, as they rank 18th out of 18 teams in the conference allowing 81.8 ppg. Turnovers have also been an issue for the Lady Cats, ranking 18th with a -7.7 turnover margin. The leading scorer and rebounder for UPJ is Jasmine Harper. Harper is pacing the team with 13.9 ppg and 8.3 rpg. The sophomore forward was the WVIAC Freshman of the Year last season. Leah Hansen played at General McLane High School and is second on the team in scoring at 11.4 ppg. and leads the team in assists with 3.3 apg. Nicole Carman checks in third in scoring (11.1 ppg.) and second in rebounding (6.6 rpg.) as the 5'10" junior averages 22.8 minutes off the bench. The first time these two teams met, Kayla DeCriscio came in as one of the top scorers in the PSAC. The sophomore guard is still one of the most efficient 3-point shooters in the league, hitting 42.5 percent of her 3-pointers, but has scored in double-figures just twice in the last 11 games after opening the season by hitting that mark in seven of the first eight games.

Last Meeting - Edinboro 91, Pitt-Johnstown 80 (November 23, 2013)
The Fighting Scots had to overcome a first half deficit to pick up their second win of the season, a 91-80 victory over Pitt-Johnston. This was Edinboro's first PSAC West game of the season. The Lady Cats held a 39-38 advantage at halftime. The score was tied three times with the lead changing five times in the first half alone. The Fighting Scots turned things around in the second half, shooting 55.6 percent while limiting the Lady Cats to 39.4 from the field. Aignee' Freeland dominated throughout, but was particular strong in the second half, scoring 14 points and pulling in nine rebounds. She finished with her second double-double of the season, totaling 18 points and 17 rebounds. Katie Collins contributed a career-high 15 points off of the bench, while Laurel Lindsay and Valerie Majewski each had 16 and 15 points, respectively. Jasmine Harper led the game with 21 points. Kayla DeCriscio and Nicole Carman each had double-doubles. DeCriscio finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Carman added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Davis & Elkins 70, Edinboro 67
Edinboro had its nine-game winning streak snapped by Davis & Elkins 70-67 in the final minute. Stephanie Wooten hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left to take a 68-67 lead. Wooten would make two free throws with four seconds left and Valerie Majewski missed a 3-pointer as time expired. Aignee' Freeland had her third straight double-double, leading the Fighting Scots with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren Hippo added 14 points and Majewski pitched in 13. The game featured 12 ties and 19 lead changes.
 
Indiana (Pa.) 85, Pitt-Johnstown 80 (OT)
Pitt-Johnstown led 42-31 at halftime, but could not close the deal against Indiana (Pa.) and eventually lost in overtime Wednesday night, 85-80. UPJ allowed IUP to shoot 62.1 percent from the floor in the second half. The game was tied at 77-77 at the end of regulation. All eight of the Crimson Hawks points in overtime came from the free throw line. Kelsey Sleighter led the Lady Cats in scoring with 16 points as four of their five starters scored in double-figures. Jasmine Harper added 15 points while Rachel Johnson had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. UPJ turned the ball over 20 times in the game, which IUP capitalized on with 30 points off turnovers.
