Box Score (New/Sortable Format) MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (January 4, 2014) – In its first game in the new year the Edinboro women's basketball team defeated Millersville 74-67 on the road in a PSAC crossover on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots were led by junior guard
Valerie Majewski's season-high 23 points as they improved to 7-3 overall while the Marauders are now 6-6 on the season.
The Fighting Scots grabbed the lead 8-5 for good with 16:17 to go in the first half as Majewski hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Edinboro would grab its largest lead of the game at 29-12 with just under ten minutes to play.
Hope Mancini capped a 19-3 run with a 3-pointer, one of four the senior guard hit during the stretch.
Edinboro would ultimately hold a 37-27 halftime lead, making 8 of 13 3-pointers during the first 20 minutes (61.5 percent). Majewski and Mancini were each four-for-five on 3-pointers as Majewski had 15 first-half points and Mancini contributed 12.
The Marauders would battle back during the second half. Trailing 65-53, Millersville pieced together a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to five points with 4:20 to play at 67-62. Carly Gallagher and Celeste Robinson scored all nine points for Millersville during the run.
Edinboro would hold Millersville to just two baskets the rest of the way.
Darche' Jackson halted the Marauders' run with a pair of baskets to build the lead back up to 71-62 with 2:40 to play. Millersville would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
All told, four Scots scored in double digits. Majewski would make 7 of 11 shots, including 4 of 6 3-pointers, and was 5 of 6 at the line to finish with her season-high total. The junior guard added three steals.
Mancini scored 14 points off the bench while junior guard
Laurel Lindsay finished with 11 points, six assists and three steals. Sophomore forward
Aignee' Freeland finished with 10 points. Freeland and senior forward
Morgyn Patterson had a team-high five rebounds, which was also a season-high for Patterson. Jackson started her second game of the season and led the team with eight assists.
Millersville had two players finish with double-doubles. Alexis Martin had 13 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out while Gallagher finished 18 points and 10 rebounds. Robinson also contributed 17 points.
The Fighting Scots shot 50.9 percent from the field in the game including hitting 9 of 17 3-point attempts (52.9 percent). The Scots shot 60 percent from the field in the second half. In the first half, the Scots shot 43.8 percent while limiting the Marauders to just 26.8 percent.
Millersville outrebounded Edinboro 43-29 and the Marauders outscored the Scots 18-4 on second chance points.
The Fighting Scots will play Cheyney tomorrow, January 5, at 1:00 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, January 3 but was postponed due to poor weather conditions.
