(January 5, 2014) – Four players scored in double figures to lead the Edinboro women's basketball team to an 81-51 win at Cheyney in a PSAC Crossover game on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Scots improved to 8-3 with their straight win while the Wolves fell to 1-11.
After struggling to begin the game, Edinboro controlled the second half. The Fighting Scots defense limited the Lady Wolves to just four-for-27 (14.8 percent) from the field in the second half.
Following a 3-pointer on the first possession by senior guard
Darche' Jackson, Cheyney would go on a 13-2 run. During that four-minute run, the Scots shot only one-for-six from the floor. Kia Whitley-Duncan led the Lady Wolves with five points during the stretch.
The Fighting Scots answered with a 17-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to take the lead for good. Senior guard
Katie Collins came off the bench and contributed nine points during the run while junior guard
Valerie Majewski hit two 3-pointers. When the run ended Edinboro would lead 22-13 with 12 minutes remaining in the half.
Edinboro would expand the lead to 16 points at 42-26 before Cheyney scored the final seven points of the first half to pull within nine points going into the break at 42-33.
Leading by 13 points at 49-36 following a pair of free throws by Lachelle Miller with 14:52 remaining, Edinboro would go on a 12-2 run to take control of the contest for good. Majewski scored the first six points of the run starting with a 3-pointer following by a conventional 3-point play on a layup and free throw. The run boosted Edinboro's lead to 61-38.
With the lead at 23 points, the Lady Wolves would make one last run to close the gap. Cheyney would score seven straight points to close to 16 at 61-45 with just under nine minutes to play. The Fighting Scots closed the game on a 20-6 burst, including scoring the final eight points of the game.
Majewski led the Scots in scoring with 17 points in only 25 minutes. She made 6 of 12 field goals, including 3 of 6 3-pointers, and was 2 of 3 at the line. She added three assists and three steals.
Edinboro had two players scored double-digits off the bench, as Collins and senior guard
Hope Mancini each scored 13 points in 14 minutes of action. Sophomore forward
Aignee' Freeland fell just shy of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard
Laurel Lindsay led the team with seven assists.
The Fighting Scots also received a key performance from
Morgyn Patterson in a reserve role. The senior forward contributed in a variety of ways, finishing with five points, six rebounds, two blocks, and an assist in 12 minutes. In all, 16 players played for Edinboro and 12 of them scored.
Miller led the Lady Wolves with 17 points off of the bench. Whitley-Duncan was the only other player for Cheyney to finish with double-digit points as she had 12 points. Cristina Jordan and Alexis Patterson each pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.
After the poor shooting in the second half, Cheyney would finish the game at just a 28.8 percent from the field while Edinboro shot 46.0 percent. That included an 8-for-20 showing on 3-pointers for the Fighting Scots, while Cheyney made 2 of 10. Edinboro forced Cheyney into 24 turnovers but was guilty of 20. The Fighting Scots also had a 43-35 rebounding advantage.
Edinboro will look for its fourth straight win while concluding PSAC crossover play on Wednesday, January 8, hosting Shippensburg . The game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
