Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, Pa. (January 8, 2014) – Junior guard
Valerie Majewski etched her name in the Edinboro record books on Wednesday night, recording the fourth triple-double in Edinboro women's basketball history as she led the Fighting Scots to a 94-74 victory against Shippensburg. Majewski finished with 25 points, 12 assists, and 11 rebounds. The win is the Scots fourth straight and Edinboro head coach Stan Swanks's 475
th of his career. The Fighting Scots now have a 9-3 record while Shippesnburg fell to 9-4.
"It is pretty exciting," said Majewski following the game. "I was just trying to play hard. I wasn't thinking about the stats when I was playing."
Majewski's triple-double was the first since the 2005-06 season when current Edinboro assistant coach
Callie Wheeler (formely Iorfido) accomplished the feat. Wheeler led the Scots to an 89-83 overtime victory in her final career home game over Shippensburg and had 29 points, 14 assists, and 10 rebounds. Majewski set career-highs across the board, including shooting 10-for-19 from the field.
"I was so proud of her," Wheeler said of Majewski's performance. "It is a great accomplishment and Val is the type of player where she does not even think about the stat. She just goes out there and does whatever it takes for our team to win, day in and day out."
Lauren Hippo provided a boost to the Fighting Scots off the bench. The sophomore guard set a career-high with 20 points in only 18 minutes of action. Hippo shot 7-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-4 on 3-pointers and adding a 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
"It was a big game," Hippo stated. "They are a really good team from the (PSAC) East and though we were down for a little bit of the game, we came together as a team and pulled it out in the end."
Senior guard
Darche' Jackson was a big part of the Fighting Scots second half. She finished the game with 15 points, 13 coming in the second-half. This was Darche's sixth game of the season and her first time scoring double-digits all year. She finished shooting 7-for-12 from the field.
"I feel a lot more comfortable," Jackson said about her game tonight compared to the beginning of the season. "Tonight is the first night I felt 100 percent again."
Edinboro trailed early in the game, falling behind by as much as 10 with 11:12 remaining in the first half and the score at 21-11. The Fighting Scots would then go on a 13-2 run to even the game up at 23-23 with 8:15 to go in the half.
Trailing 25-23, Hippo and
Morgyn Patterson carried the team on a 12-0 run to give the Scots their first lead of the game. Hippo and Patterson scored every point during the run, Hippo with seven and Patterson five. The Scots would not hand over the lead the rest of the game and led 35-25 with 6:06 left in the half.
Shippensburg would cut the lead down to end the first half. The Raiders scored the last 10 points of the half over the final 2:36. The Fighting Scots would lead 44-40 at halftime.
Hippo was key to the Scots overcoming their first half deficit. She did not check into the game until right after the Raiders established their biggest lead of the game. Hippo finished the half with 14 points in only nine minutes. The 14 first half points were more than she had scored in any full game in her career. Majewski was nearing the triple-double at the break, as she had seven points, six assists, and six rebounds.
"I think Lauren (Hippo) stepped up and gave us a great spark off the bench," Swank said discussing the first half. "We started off really slow but we made some adjustments defensively. We tried to do some things we did not need to do, trying to over press and trying some half-court junk defenses and we just went back to man-to-man and played what we needed to do."
The Raiders would continue their run to start the second half and trail only 44-42 with 19:13 to play. Leading 49-46 with 16:09 to go, Edinboro would go on a 9-2 run. Majewski led the way with five points during the run and the Scots led 58-48 with 13:43 left.
The Scots would gradually extend their lead the rest of the second half, largely due to Majewski's strong showing in the final half. She finished with 18 points, six assists, and five rebounds in the second half. The 20-point victory was the second largest of the season for the Fighting Scots and they have now won the last two games by a combined 50 points (defeated Cheyney 81-51).
"Val (Majewski) is spectacular," remarked Swank after the win. "She is a great student, she is a great person, she has a demeanor that is great for our team. She is extremely intelligent on the floor and has a huge basketball IQ. She can score, she can rebound, she can dish out."
In addition to the trio of Majewski, Hippo, and Jackson, Edinboro also had sophomore forward
Aignee' Freeland score in the double-digits. Freeland finished with 10 points and six rebounds on 5-for-7 shooting. Junior guard
Laurel Lindsay was in foul trouble throughout the game and played a season-low six minutes. Freshman forward
Nicole Johnson and senior guard
Hope Mancini each provided additional lifts in addition to Hippo off the bench. Mancini finished with eight points and two assists while Johnson had six points, six rebounds, four steals, and two assists.
Shippensburg was led in scoring by Lauren Gold. Gold finished with 17 points and was 8-for-9 from the free throw line. Sarah Strybuc, the PSAC's third-highest leading scorer with 19.3 per game, was held to 16 points on 4-for-14 shooting. Strybuc played nearly the entire game, sitting out less than a minute. Stephanie Knauer and Morgan Griffith each scored in double-digits as well and paced the Raiders in rebounding. Griffith finished with 16 points and seven rebounds while Knauer had 12 points and six rebounds.
Both teams shot the ball well in the first half. Edinboro shot 48.6 percent while the Raiders were 48.0 percent. The second half was a different story though, as the Fighting Scots shot 53.8 percent from the field and Shippensburg 36.7 percent. For the game, the Scots nearly outshot the Raiders by ten percent (51.3 percent for Edinboro to 41.8 percent for Shippensburg).
The Raiders were benefitted greatly from the free throw line. They scored 25 of their points (33.8 percent of their total) at the free throw line on 28 attempts for a 89.3 percentage.
Edinboro outrebounded Shippensburg 38-33. They also outscored the Raiders in the paint 52-38 and the Scots bench bested the Raiders bench 38-10.
