(November 15, 2014) - The No. 6 Edinboro women's basketball team played strong in the second half of its season-opener on Saturday afternoon against Chowan to pull away for a 75-59 victory. This was the first game of the Atlantic Region Challenge hosted by Millersville. The Fighting Scots outscored the Hawks 47-33 in the last 20 minutes.
Hope Mancini led all scorers with 26 points, scoring 16 in the second half. Edinboro moves to 1-0 while Chowan falls to 0-1.
The victory improved
Stan Swank's record at Edinboro to 494-275. Swank is now just six wins away from becoming the first coach in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) to reach 500 wins at the Division II level. Swank has now guided Edinboro to its 14
th straight season-opening victory.
The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 10-1 lead to begin the game. The Hawks gradually chipped into the deficit until breaking through with an 11-3 run to take a 26-24 lead with 2:08 remaining in the first half. Naima Harrington scored the first five points to kick start the run.
Laurel Lindsay made two free throws with 22 seconds left in the opening frame to give Edinboro a 28-26 lead at halftime.

Andrea Martre for career assists (340).At halftime, Edinboro shot 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) compared to Chowan's 8-for-32 (25.0 percent). The Scots outrebounded the Hawks 24-21 while Harrington paced Hawks way with 11 points at the break. Mancini led the Scots with 10 points.
Edinboro stormed out of the gates to start the second half. Mancini scored the first five points in a 10-0 run in the first 2:33 to build a 38-26 lead. The Fighting Scots would lead by at least eight points the rest of the game.
Mancini's 26 points were the second-highest of her career. She shot 7-for-18 from the floor and 4-for-8 on 3-pointers. Mancini finished a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line and also added four rebounds and three assists. The graduate student out of Mayfield Heights, Ohio played in her first game since missing the last 20 games of last season due to injury. Mancini scored a career-high 31 points last year against Seton Hill on December 4, 2013.
Lindsay finished with 19 points, four away from her career-high. The guard/forward shot 4-for-6 from the field, making her lone 3-point attempt, and making 10-for-13 from the charity stripe. Lindsay paced the Scots with eight assists which pushed her career total to 340. She is now tied for 11
th all-time with Andrea Martre in career assists.
Lauren Hippo scored 18 points for Edinboro. The junior guard shot 6-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-7 on 3-pointers. Last season, Hippo shot 48.9 percent from beyond the arc, the second-highest mark in PSAC history.
The Fighting Scots were led in rebounding by
Aignee' Freeland. The junior forward/center finished with four points and eight rebounds. It was the 35
th time in Freeland's career she led the team in rebounding.
Alisha Mobley led the Hawks in scoring. The junior forward nearly notched a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Harrington only added six points in the second half to finish with 17 points. The senior guard also led Chowan with four assists. Jordan Payne pulled down ten rebounds and contributed eight points for the Hawks.
Edinboro finished the game shooting 20-for-49 (40.8 percent) and 9-for-16 (56.3 percent) on 3-pointers compared to Chowan's 21-for-70 (30.0 percent) and 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from deep. The Hawks outrebounded the Fighting Scots 47-40.

Edinboro will return to Pucillo Gymnasium tomorrow to take on Virginia-Wise. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
