Lauren Hippo picked up where she left off last season in the Edinboro women's basketball teams exhibition opener against St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon. The junior guard/forward led the Fighting Scots with 25 points in a 61-51 loss to the Bonnies. This was the fifth straight year these two teams met in the preseason with St. Bonaventure winning each game.
Edinboro fell behind 17-3 with 10:42 left in the first half following a 14-0 run by St. Bonaventure. The Fighting Scots fell behind by as much as 18 points in the first half with 5:25 remaining in the opening frame. The Bonnies led 28-14 at the break.
The Fighting Scots shot five-for-21 (23.8 percent) from the floor in the first half. Hippo made four of the Scots five shots in the first half as she led all scorers with 11 points at the break.
Edinboro came out much more competitive in the second half, outscoring St. Bonaventure 37-33 in the final twenty minutes. The Fighting Scots continued to chip into the lead until using an 8-2 run to ultimately close the gap to as little as four points.
Laurel Lindsay scored the first five points of the run and Hippo capped it off with a 3-pointer to make it 48-44 with 6:27 to play.
The Bonnies would not allow Edinboro to get any closer in the contest. They responded with a 9-2 run to extend the lead back to 57-46 with 3:58 remaining. The Fighting Scots would not get any closer than nine points behind the rest of the way.
Last season, Hippo started the last 12 games and averaged 12.8 points per game over that stretch including a career-high 29 points against West Chester in the PSAC Semifinals. The Altoona, Pa. native finished nine-for-11 (81.8%) from the field including hitting four-of-five (80.0 percent) on 3-pointers. She also contributed three rebounds and two steals in 39 minutes of action.
Lindsay was the only other Fighting Scot to reach double-figures in scoring, finishing with 18 points and leading the team with seven assists. The guard/forward went 10-for-11 (90.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
Aignee' Freeland led Edinboro with eight rebounds while playing 39 minutes.
St. Bonaventure was paced by Katie Healy. The All-Atlantic-10 Preseason selection finished with 15 points including a perfect seven-for-seven on free throws.
The Bonnies outshot the Fighting Scots 39.2 percent compared to 34.9 percent for the game and outrebounded Edinboro 35-31.
Edinboro will tip-off its regular season on Saturday, November 15. The Fighting Scots will be participating in the Atlantic Region Challenge at Millersville, Pa. Their opening game will be against Chowan at 2:00 p.m. followed by a Sunday, November 16 game against Virginia-Wise at 1:00 p.m.
