Fighting Scots and No. 3 Lady Knights Play for First Place in PSAC West

STORYLINE
The Edinboro women's basketball team looks to get over Saturday's 80-55 loss versus California (Pa.) when the Fighting Scots make the short trip to No. 3 Gannon on Wednesday night. The winner of Wednesday night's contest will take over sole possession of first place in the PSAC West. Edinboro won the first meeting between the two in a monumental victory for the program, 75-72 in overtime, knocking then No. 2 Gannon from the unbeaten ranks. Gannon has won its last five games since losing to Edinboro. The Fighting Scots have lost two of their last four games after a nine-game winning streak. The Scots stand at 16-5 overall and 10-1 in the PSAC West while the Lady Knights are 22-1 overall and 11-1 in the PSAC West. Gannon was picked to finish first in the PSAC West in the preseason poll while Edinboro was picked to finish second.

#13 Aignee' Freeland (F/C, 6-3, So.) – Freeland's recent streak of double-doubles came to an end against Cal, concluding at five straight games. The sophomore forward is second on the team with 13.9 ppg. and leads the team with 8.6 rpg. Against Gannon, Freeland is averaging 5.0 points and rebounds per game.

#3 Darche' Jackson (G, 5-8, Sr.) – In the last two meetings against Gannon, Jackson is averaging 19.5 ppg. including a game-high 22 points in the match-up earlier this year. The senior guard has 36 assists compared to just four turnovers in the last five games. She is just six points away from becoming the 28th member of the 1,000-point club.

#11 Jen Papich (F, 6-1, Sr.) – Jen Papich was the PSAC Western Division Athlete of the Year last season. The senior forward checks in third on the team in scor­ing (12.8 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.2 rpg). She leads the team and is fourth in the PSAC in blocks per game (1.5 bpg). She has averaged 15.1 points per game versus the Fighting Scots in her career, including a game-high 26 in the final meeting of last season between the two.

#44 Nettie Blake (F/C, 6-1, Jr.) – Nettie Blake pairs with Papich in the frontcourt to form a formidable presence in the paint. The junior forward/center is the team's leading scorer (14.8 ppg) and rebounder (8.3 rpg). Earlier this season Blake led the Lady Knights with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
 
SCOUTING GANNON
Gannon is led by first-year head coach Jim Brunelli. Brunelli took over a program that made the NCAA Division II Elite Eight last year and returned all of its starters and has led them to a 22-1 start, ranked third in Division II. The Lady Knights rank among the best in multiple statistical categories in the PSAC. They are fourth in the PSAC in scoring offense (77.0 ppg.) and first in scoring defense (59.4 ppg.). Gannon is also second in the conference in rebounding margin (+5.6) and second in 3-point percentage (38.1 percent). The Lady Knights are led in scoring and rebounding by Nettie Blake. The 6'1" junior is 13th in the PSAC in scoring (14.8 ppg.) and tenth in rebounding (8.3 rpg.). In the first meeting between the two, Blake had 21 points and 14 rebounds. Jen Papich is second on the team in points and rebounds. The reigning PSAC West Player of the Year is averaging 12.8 ppg. and 6.2 rpg. Brittany Batts is third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.2 ppg. The junior guard does most of her work on 3-pointers, shooting 77-for-157 on the year, which leads the PSAC in 3-point percentage (49.0 percent) and 3-pointers made per game (3.3). Kelly Sundberg ranks first in the PSAC with 5.1 assists per game. The senior guard also adds 6.0 ppg. and 3.7 rpg. A deep Gannon team has 10 players that play at least 11 minutes per game.

Last Meeting - Edinboro 75, Gannon 72 (OT) (January 18, 2014)
In one of the biggest victories in program history, the Fighting Scots knocked then No. 2 Gannon from the unbeaten ranks and ended the Lady Knights 17-game winning streak, 75-72. The back and forth affair featured seven ties and 12 lead changes. Nettie Blake tied the game with a free throw and 57 seconds left on the clock in regulation to send it to overtime at 65-65. The final lead change occurred with 25 seconds left in overtime when Laurel Lindsay hit a lay-up to give Edinboro a 73-72 lead. Valerie Majewski would follow that with two free throws to ice the game with 17 seconds to play. Kelley Sundberg's 3-pointer at the buzzer fell astray. Darche' Jackson scored a season-high 22 points. Jackson was responsible for guarding Brittany Batts, the top 3-point shooter in the nation, and limited Batts to just three points on 1-for-3 from deep. Lindsay finished with 15 points and seven assists. Majewski and Lauren Hippo each added 10 points as well, while Majewski also pulled down six rebounds. It was the Scots' sixth win in the last seven meetings between the two schools after losing the previous seven in a row.

California (Pa.) 80, Edinboro 55
Edinboro suffered its worst loss of the season versus Cal on Saturday, 80-55. The 25-point loss was the largest final deficit at home since 2002-03 against Millersville, 81-52. The Fighting Scots committed a season-high 24 turnovers and were outrebounded 44-30, including 24 offensive rebounds. It was Edinboro's first PSAC West loss of the season. Laurel Lindsay was the lone Scot to score in double figures, tying her career-high with 20 points. The loss dropped the Fighting Scots record to 8-4 at home.
 
No. 3 Gannon 70, Mercyhurst 56
Gannon trailed by as much as 10 points in the first half and eight at the break before rallying in second half to beat Mercyhurst 70-56 after trailing 36-28 at the break. The Lady Knights shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the second half while holding the Lakers to 32.0 percent from the field. Gannon went on 13-0 run to open the second half and led 41-36 with 13:42 to play. Mercyhurst would eventually retake the lead for a short period, but the Lady Knights finished the game on an 18-2 run to cap off the victory. Jen Papich was perfect from the floor, shooting 9-for-9, and finished with a game-high 22 points.
