(February 15, 2014) - The Edinboro women's basketball team had to withstand multiple runs by Mercyhurst at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon to hold onto a 64-61 victory. The Fighting Scots improved their record to 18-5 overall and 12-1 in the PSAC West while the Lakers fell to 6-17 and 4-9, respectively.
In a game of runs, the Lakers pieced together runs of 12-0 and 12-4 in the final 11 minutes of the game to pull within just one point each time.
Leading 35-30 at the half, Edinboro opened the second half on a 10-0 run.
Lauren Hippo scored the final five points of the run with a 3-pointer at the end giving Edinboro its largest lead of the game ahead 45-30. The Scots soon followed with a 5-0 run that gave them a 50-37 lead with 10:52 remaining.
The Lakers went on a 12-0 run over the next three and half minutes. Alex Artise capped off the run with a 3-pointer to pull the game to 50-49 with 6:42 to play.
The Fighting Scots then went on an 8-0 run in which they were a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line during that stretch.
Aignee' Freeland hit four of the free throws and
Laurel Lindsay scored the other two from the charity strike. Edinboro led 58-49 with 3:44 to play.
The Lakers would not go away. They rallied with a 9-3 run to close to the gap to 61-58 with 54 seconds on the clock. On the following possession, Lindsay went to the foul line for a one-and-one. Lindsay missed the free throw but
Darche' Jackson pulled down the offensive rebound to maintain possession. The Scots ran off 22 seconds before Lindsay once again was fouled with 17 seconds to play. The junior guard/forward hit one of two to build the lead to 62-58.
Adrienne Kloecker's 3-pointer on the other end made it a one-point game at 62-61 with eight seconds showing.
Lindsay was fouled on the inbounds and made both free throws for the final margin.
Katie Fischer's contested 3-point attempt was not close at the buzzer.
Lindsay tied a career-high with 20 points while shooting 4-for-7 from the floor including 10-for-14 from the free throw line. It was the third time this season she has reached that mark.
Valerie Majewski finished with 17 points after a brilliant first half. She led all players with 12 points at the break.
Freeland recorded her tenth double-double of the season and sixth in her last eight contests as she finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds. She was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity strike.
Hippo was the only other Scot to reach double-figures, finishing with 10 points on 4-for-10 shooting in a career-high 36 minutes.
Kloecker led the Lakers with 14 points and five assists. The only other starter to score in double-figures was Alayna White who shot 6-for-10 from the field to finish with 13 points.
The Lakers received two key bench performances from Katie Fischer and Mariah Penascino. Fischer finished with 13 points after scoring 11 in the first half while Penascino scored 11 points going a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and 2-for-2 at the free throw line.
Edinboro shot a season-low 35.7 percent (20-for-56) from the floor. Mercyhurst had its second-best shooting percentage of the season, shooting 50 percent (22-for-44). The Lakers 46.7 percent on 3-pointers was a season-high as well and the highest clip the Scots have allowed an opposing team to shoot this season.
The Fighting Scots held their own at the free throw line, shooting 18-for-23 for their second highest percentage of the season (78.3 percent). They also forced 22 turnovers while committing just 13.
The Lakers bench outscored the Scots bench 31-1. The one point came from
Nicole Johnson and was a season-low for the Edinboro bench.
Edinboro will be on the road next week for both games. They begin with a trip to Slippery Rock on Wednesday, February 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. as the Scots continue to try and clinch the top spot in the PSAC West.
Game Notes: The win was the 96
th for the senior class, a record for most wins by a four-year class that they set in the last game at No. 3 Gannon… The Edinboro starters scored 98.4 percent of the points in the game, the highest clip this season… The Scots improve to 9-4 at home this season…
