(February 22, 2014) – The Edinboro women's basketball team rallied from a 16-point second half deficit for a 69-63 win at Indiana(Pa.) on Saturday night at the Kovalchick Complex. The victory clinched the top seed in the Western Division for the Fighting Scots, who are now 14-1 in league play and came in ranked third in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. It was also the 20th of the season, as coach
Stan Swank's team improved to 20-5 overall. It marked the fourth straight season with at least 20 victories, and the tenth in Swank's tenure. IUP fell to 16-9 overall and 7-8 in the PSAC West while losing to Edinboro for the ninth straight time.
IUP led for much of the game, taking a 33-20 lead at halftime while holding Edinboro to 29.6 percent shooting from the floor (8 of 27) and outrebounding the Scots 24-14. The Crimson Hawks built the lead to 16 points at 36-20 on the first basket of the half, a 3-pointer by Marita Mathe.
The Fighting Scots went on a 13-2 run to close the gap to 38-33 with 15:20 to play.
Darche' Jackson contributed five points and
Aignee' Freeland had four, with the Scots going 7-for-7 from the line in the stretch.
IUP built the lead back up to ten points at 50-40 with 11:31 remaining, and still led by eight at 55-47 with just over six minutes to play. Edinboro would pull to within one point on three occasions. The first two times the Crimson Hawks responded with a basket, the last by Ashley Stoner with 2;22 to play for a 61-58 IUP lead.
Edinboro would run off the next nine points before the run was finally interrupted by a pair of free throws by Talen Watson. By that time just nine seconds remained.
Laurel Lindsay started the 9-0 burst with a layup.
Valerie Majewski gave Edinboro its first lead since the midway point of the first half when she drained a 3-pointer for a 63-61 lead with 59 seconds to play.
Jackson and Majewski would add a pair of free throws to give the Scots their biggest lead of the night at 67-61 with 15 ticks on the clock.
Majewski led four players in double figures as the junior guard finished with 18 points. All came in the second half, after she had missed her only two shots in the first half. She went 5 of 10 from the floor and was 7 of 8 from the charity stripe.
Jackson and Freeland each had double doubles. Jackson scored 17 points and matched her career high with 11 rebounds. In the process the senior guard moved into 25th place in career scoring with 1,046 points. Freeland posted her third straight double double and 12th of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. She was a perfect 7-for-7 from the line.
Lindsay was the fourth Fighting Scot in double figures, as the junior recorded what has become a typical game. She had 16 points (5 of 10 FGs, 2of 3 3's, 4 of 5 FTs), 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals while playing all 40 minutes.
IUP also had four players in double figures, led by Lindsay Stamp with 13 points. Stoner had 12 points and 9 rebounds, with Zhane Brooks adding 12 points and 8 boards. Watson totaled 11 points.
Edinboro would end the game shooting 40.7 percent from the floor (22 of 54), as the Fighting Scots hits at a 51.9 percent clip in the second half (14 of 27). IUP ended at 38.3 percent (23 of 60) as the Crimson Hawks were just 10 of 30 (33.3 percent) in the second half. Edinboro was a near-perfect 21 of 23 from the line, while IUP made 13 of 17 free throws.
After being dominated on the glass in the first half, Edinboro returned the favor in the second half, with each team finishing with 36 rebounds. Edinboro turned the ball over 10 times and IUP 11.
Edinboro will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday, February 28 hosting Clarion. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse will be at 5:30 p.m., preceeded by ceremonies honoring six seniors.
