Rival Cal Visits Edinboro in PSAC West Battle

STORYLINE
The Edinboro women's basketball team faces a familiar foe on Saturday night as they host California (Pa.). The Fighting Scots clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament in their last game a 65-53 win at Seton Hill and face a Cal team still jockeying for positioning in the PSAC West. Edinboro has won 11 of its last 12 games. Edinboro enters the game 16-4 overall and 10-0 in the PSAC West while the Vulcans are 13-7 and 7-4, respectively. The Scots were picked to finish second in the PSAC West in the preseason while Cal was picked to finish in a tie for third with Indiana (Pa.).

#13 Aignee' Freeland (F/C, 6-3, So.) - Freeland has recorded double-doubles in each of the last five games. The sophomore forward averages 19.8 ppg. over four games against Cal and has shot 38-for-57 from the floor (66.7 percent).

#11 Laurel Lindsay (G/F, 6-0, Jr.) - The junior guard/forward has quietly put together three good games in a row. Over the last three, Lindsay is averaging 12.3 ppg., 6.3 rpg., and 4.6 apg. which are all above her season averages. Earlier this year against Cal, Lindsay had nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

#2 Emma Mahady (G/F, 5-11, Jr.) - Mahady leads California (Pa.) in scoring at 13.1 ppg. The Australian-born junior shot 1-for-8 from the floor against Edinboro earlier this year including 0-for-5 on 3-pointers. In the last four games between the two schools, Mahady is shooting 8-for-40 from the floor (20 percent) and averaging 7.5 ppg.

#11 Kaitlynn Fratz (G, 5-5, Jr.) - Fratz did not start to open the season but has started every game since expooding for 26 points on 10-for-18 shooting off the bench the last time these two played. She was named the WVIAC Freshman of the Year during her time at Pitt-Johnstown.

SCOUTING CALIFORNIA (PA.)
California (Pa.) began the season 0-4, but has gone 13-3 since then, including a six-game winning streak following an 81-70 loss to Edinboro. The Vulcans come into Saturday night having won their last two games. Cal made the NCAA Tournament Regional Finals a year ago, led by Jess Strom. Strom is in her third season and the former Penn State star has guided the Vulcans to a 49-23 mark during her time. They rank seventh in the PSAC with 73.1 ppg. and seventh in scoring defense allowing 67.7 ppg. Cal ranks 18th (out of 18) teams in field goal percentage defense (45.4 percent) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (35.4 percent). The Vulcans entered the week seventh in the nation in turnover margin and currently have a +6.5 turnover margin, good for first in the PSAC. They are led in scoring by Emma Mahady. The Australian guard/forward is leading the way with 13.1 ppg. In the last four games against Edinboro, Mahady is averaging 7.5 ppg. and shooting 8-for-40 from the floor (20 percent). Kaitlynn Fratz is second on the team in scoring with 11.5 ppg. The Pitt-Johnstown transfer did not start the first seven games of the season, but has started every game since a 26-point outburst against the Fighting Scots. Ashley Hines leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 6.7 rpg. In addition to Mahady, Cal has two other foreigners who play significant roles. Elena Antonenko, a member of the Russian National Team, averages 8.3 ppg and 4.9 rpg. The Vulcans have another Aussie on the team, 2013 All-PSAC West Second Team selection Kate Seebohm. The senior guard was a preseason All-PSAC West Team selection. She is averaging 1.9 ppg. and 1.2 rpg. in 14.6 minutes per game. Seebohm has not started since the second game of the season against Fairmont State.

•       This will be the 76th installment of this series, tied with Lock Haven for the third most played series in Edinboro history. Slippery Rock (92) and Indiana (Pa.) (82) are the only two schools the Scots have played more.
 
Last Meeting - Edinboro 81, California (Pa.) 70 (December 7, 2013)
Aignee' Freeland had a career-high 31 points in the last meeting between these two, an 81-70 victory for Edinboro over California (Pa.). The win avenged the Fighting Scots loss to the Vulcans in the first round of the NCAA Tournament the previous year. Freeland also registered a double-double, pulling in 10 rebounds. The Fighting Scots never trailed in the game and limited the Vulcans to 38.6 percent shooting from the floor. Three other Scots scored in double-figures. Katie Collins contributed 13 points off the bench. Valerie Majewski and Hope Mancini each added 12 points. Kaitlynn Fratz scored 26 points off the bench to lead Cal in scoring. Elena Antonenko also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Fighting Scots clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament with a 65-53 win at Seton Hill on Wednesday night. Valerie Majewski paced Edinboro with 16 points. Lauren Hippo added 13 points off the bench while Laurel Lindsay scored 12. Aignee' Freeland registered her fifth straight double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Darche' Jackson had a career-high 14 assists while turning the ball over just once. The Scots are now 10-0 against the Griffins in school history.
 
California (Pa.) 79, Mercyhurst 65
California (Pa.) used a 33-17 run to close the game to defeat Mercyhurst 79-65 on Wednesday night. The Vulcans were outrebounded 39-22 in the contest, but only turned the ball over 13 times compared to the Lakers 27, which led to 39 Cal points off of turnovers. Kaitlynn Fratz led the Vulcans with 25 points. Emma Mahady contributed 14 while Irina Kukolj provided 11 points off the bench.
