Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, Pa. (February 8, 2014) - The Edinboro women's basketball team suffered its first loss in PSAC West play to California (Pa.) on Saturday night, 80-55. The 25-point loss was the largest loss of the season and largest home loss since losing 81-52 to Millersville in 2002-03. The Fighting Scots fell to 16-5 overall and 10-1 in the PSAC West while the Vulcans improved to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in conference.
Edinboro defeated Cal earlier this season, 81-70 on December 7, 2013. The Fighting Scots fall to second place in the PSAC West with Gannon moving to first with an 11-1 conference record. The Scots and Lady Knights play this Wednesday, February 12.
Cal held a significant advantage rebounding, pulling down 44 rebounds to Edinboro's 30. The Vulcans had 24 offensive rebounds leading to 13 second chance points.
The Fighting Scots committed a season-high 24 turnovers, leading to 23 Cal points. Edinboro committed 15 in the first half and trailed 39-25 at the break.
Edinboro was in the game early. The Scots held their only lead of the game 5-3 with 15:32 to play in the first half. With the game tied 11-11 at the 12:04 mark, Cal went on a 7-0 run to make the score 18-11 with 6:52 remaining in the first half, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
The Vulcans led by at least 15 the entire second half. Their biggest lead came with 2:25 remaining when Emma Mahady hit two free throws to give Cal a 78-50 lead.
Laurel Lindsay was the only Fighting Scot to score in double-figures. The junior guard/forward tied a career-high with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting. She also led the team with seven rebounds.
Aignee' Freeland had scored in double-figures in all four career games against the Vulcans entering tonight. The sophomore forward finished with four points and five rebounds. She had previously averaged 19.8 ppg. and eight rpg. against Cal.
Darche' Jackson scored nine points on 4-for-17 shooting and led the team with five assists. The senior guard is now six points away from becoming the 28
th member of the 1,000-point club in school history.
Valerie Majewski also added nine points on 4-for-5 shooting.
Cal had four of its starters score in double-figures. Mike Glenn led the way with 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Irina Kukolj added 16 points. Kukolj and Glenn were the only two to make a 3-pointer in the game for Cal, each hitting one.
Emma Mahady and Kaitlynn Fratz each scored 12 points. Mahady added seven rebounds while Fratz led the team with four assists.
The Fighting Scots shot a higher percentage from the floor than the Vulcans, hitting 39.6 percent of their shots compared to Cal's 38.8 percent.
The Vulcans had 14 fast break points to Edinboro's zero.
Edinboro is scheduled to tip-off with Gannon at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday night in the Hammermill Center. The winner will take over first place in the PSAC West.
