STORYLINEThe Edinboro women's basketball team travels to Glenville, West Virginia for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. The Fighting Scots play Charleston in the opening round on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Lilly Gymnasium. The Scots won the PSAC Championship with an 86-76 win over Gannon to earn their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Fighting Scots are seeded second. The Golden Eagles are the seventh seed as a Mountain East Conference At-Large after losing to regional host Glenville State 74-50 in the MEC Championship. The two teams have split their previous NCAA Tournament games against one another with Charleston winning the last game in 2006, 71-62. Edinboro was ranked 25th in the most recent USA Today Coaches Poll. The Scots are riding an eight-game winning streak and are 24-5 overall. Charleston comes in at 21-8.

Key PlayersEdinboro#30 Valerie Majewski (G, 5-7, Jr.) – Majewski has racked up the accolades as of late and for good reason. The Daktronics Atlantic First Team All-Region selection and PSAC Tournament MVP has averaged 22.3 ppg. and 9.0 assists per game over the last three games. Her 33 points in the PSAC Championship was a season-high for any Fighting Scots.
#3 Darche' Jackson (G, 5-8, Sr.) – The PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year has shutdown opposing 3-point shooters all year, helping Edinboro to a PSAC-best in 3-point field goal percentage defense (26.9 percent). Charleston has two players (LeAnne Ross and Nichole Perry) who have combined to shoot 356 3-pointers this year. Jackson will likely be tasked with shutting down one of these 3-point threats.
Charleston#3 Chyress Lockhart (G, 5-6, Jr.) – The Morgan State transfer is the team leader in points (14.8 ppg.) and assists (3.6 apg.). Lockhart was a First Team All-MEC selection and is averaging 15.4 ppg. over the last five games.
#22 LeAnne Ross (G, 5-8, Jr.) – The Second Team All-MEC selection is great 3-point shooter, leading the Golden Eagles converting 45.7 percent on 3-pointers. Ross is second on the team with 13.3 ppg.
SCOUTING CHARLESTONMountain East Conference Coach of the Year Adam Collins has put Charleston in the NCAA Tournament in just his second season at the helm. The Golden Eagles went 21-8 this season after finishing 16-13 a year ago. Charleston has experience against the PSAC this season going 2-0 against the likes of Clarion and Millersville. The Golden Eagles are eighth in the MEC in scoring at 70.7 ppg. but are a conference-best in scoring defense at 64.2 ppg. Charleston shoots 37.4 percent on 3-pointers, second in the MEC and 15th in the nation. The Golden Eagles have attempted 588 3-pointers, 123 more than their opponents. They are also tops in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage defense allowing opposing teams to shoot 30.1 percent. They rank second in the MEC and 33rd nationally in rebounding margin with a +5.3 advantage. They are led by Morgan State transfer Chyress Lockhart. The First Team All-MEC selection leads the Golden Eagles with 14.8 ppg. and 3.6 assists per game. LeAnne Ross is one of the top 3-point shooters in the nation. Charleston's second-leading scorer at 13.3 ppg. Ross shoots 45.7 percent (79-for-173) on 3-pointers, good for fifth in the nation. The Second Team All-MEC honoree also leads the team shooting 46.1 percent from the floor. Nichole Perry is the only other player to average double-digits at 10.8 ppg. The junior guard leads the team with 183 3-point attempts, making 68. She converts on 37.2 percent of her 3-pointers. Kiara Johnson is the leading rebounder. The sophomore center averages 6.8 rpg. in just 15.7 minutes per game off the bench.

Last Meeting - Charleston 77, Edinboro 74 (November 29, 2009)Each team had four players score in double-digits. Kelsey Conklin was the game's leading scorer with 21 points for the Fighting Scots, but the Golden Eagles bested Edinboro 77-74 in a tight contest. Ali Tobias and LindseyKentner each scored 20 points for Charleston. In addition to Conklin, Samantha Reimer scored 19 points.
Samantha Blazetic added 12 points for the Scots while Renee' Brown had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Kaitlyn Arick provided 15 points for the Golden Eagles and Tiana Beatty scored 11 points. Tarenna Dixon neared a double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds. Edinboro won the turnover battle forcing 20 turnovers while only committing 12. Charleston shot 45.8 percent from the floor including 5-for-10 on 3-pointers compared to the Scots 40.5 percent from the floor and 5-for-18 on 3-pointers.
LAST TIME OUTEdinboro 86, Gannon 76 - PSAC ChampionshipThe Edinboro women's basketball team made it three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships in the last four years with an 86-76 win over Gannon last Sunday. Gannon was ranked third nationally and first in the region. The Lady Knights fell to 27-3, with all three losses at the hands of the Fighting Scots.
Valerie Majewski scored a career-high 33 points, tied for the sixth-highest single-game total in the PSAC playoffs. She added eight assists along with five rebounds. The junior guard scored 23 of her points in the second half, including 19 of the team's final 28 points. That coincided with the game-deciding run for Edinboro. Gannon cut the lead to 56-54 midway through the second half on Jen Papich's driving layup. The Fighting Scots followed with an 11-3 run that built the lead to 67-57 with 7 minutes, 6 seconds remaining. Gannon had one last run in it, as Brittany Batts hit her lone three of the game and Papich scored on another layup to close the gap to 72-68 with 4:02 remaining. The Lady Knights still trailed by just four points at 80-76 with 44 seconds to play, but they would not score again. Majewski made four free throws in the final 44 seconds. Both teams made 32 of 58 shots, good for 55.2 percent. Edinboro sizzled from beyond the 3-point line, making 10 of 16 three's, while Gannon was 6 of 16. The real difference came on turnovers. Edinboro was guilty of five turnovers while forcing 12 Gannon miscues. It led to a 14-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
Laurel Lindsay had 16 points, eight assists and five rebounds, while
Aignee' Freeland also scored 16 points, with 14 in the first half.
Lauren Hippo added 11 points.
Glenville State 74, Charleston 50 - MEC ChampionshipCharleston lost the inaugural Mountain East Conference Basketball Championship to Glenville State 74-50 this past Sunday. The Pioneers swept the Golden Eagles 3-0 on the season. Glenville State forced 18 turnovers and had four players score in double-figures. LeAnne Ross led the way for Charleston with 17 points. Chyress Lockhart had 13 points and was the only other Golden Eagles to score double-digit points. After trailing 28-20 at halftime, Charleston stayed within 12 points before a 7-0 run by Glenville State locked the game up for the Pioneers.
