(March 28, 2014) – The Edinboro women's lacrosse team earned its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference win on Friday afternoon defeating Kutztown 8-7. The Fighting Scots had to fight off a late surge to defeat the Golden Bears, who scored the last six goals of the game. Edinboro improved to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC while Kutztown fell to 2-3 overall, 0-3 in conference.
The Fighting Scots got off to a sizzling start. At halftime they led 5-1 as
Hannah Mong scored twice and
Rebecca Martin added a goal and two assists. They scored three goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to take an 8-1 lead. Martin capped off the run by scoring her third goal of the game with 23:07 remaining.
Kutztown began to find the back of the net after that. Taylor Stone scored to begin the Golden Bears comeback effort with 21:35 left. Krystine Beodeker and Cara Lord combined for three goals in under three minutes from the 13:51 mark to 10:52 to play to cut the Scots lead to 8-5.
Jillian Spencer then tallied two goals with the last coming with just 2:15 on the clock to make it a one-point game at 8-7. Kutztown would have one last opportunity following an Edinboro foul with three seconds left.
Cydney Hrycko caused a turnover and scooped up the subsequent groundball to end the game.
Martin's three goals boosted her season total to 12, tied for the third on the team. The sophomore also added two assists and paces the team with 37 points. Mong added two goals and one assist.
Alexa Healy added a goal and leads the team with 18 goals this season.
Jenny Wirth also scored once and is now second on the team with 13 goals.
Autumn Held had 12 saves in net while facing 28 shots as the Golden Bears held a 28-18 advantage in shots. The Fighting Scots were able to overcome 25 turnovers, many in the final minutes.
The Fighting Scots are back in action tomorrow afternoon playing at Millersville. The match begins at 2 p.m.
