Fighting Scots Top Walsh, Fall to Wayne State in Final Day of Tony Banner Memorial Tournament

(September 6, 2014) – The Edinboro volleyball team split its final day of competition at the Tony Banner Invitational at Clarion University on Saturday, defeating Walsh 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-18) in the early game before dropping the nightcap to Wayne State by a score of 3-2 (21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 13-15). The Fighting Scots moved to 2-1 on the season with the split, while Walsh fell to 0-2 and Wayne State improved to 2-2.

Haley Marett and Sydney Trathen were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances over the weekend.
 
Marett, a 5-4 senior, totaled 59 digs and 14 assists in three games for Edinboro. Trathen made an immediate impact in her first three games for the Fighting Scots. The freshman setter dished out 103 assists to go along with 30 digs during the tournament.
 
After posting a 3-0 sweep of Adelphi on Friday afternoon, Edinboro kept its momentum rolling into Saturday morning with a 3-1 victory over Walsh.
 
Jen Gruber paced the Fighting Scots with a career-high with 13 kills, topping her previous career mark of nine kills which she matched on Friday against the Panthers. The sophomore also added 10 digs in the win.
 
Marett led four Edinboro spikers with double-figure digs with 18, followed by Challen Litwiler with 16 and Marah Maycock with 15 digs. Maycock also posted 11 kills in the match.  
 
Trathen set a career-high with 42 assists, while also recording nine digs and five kills to help the Fighting Scots to victory.
 
After dropping the first two sets to Wayne State by scores of 25-21 and 25-20 in the second match of the day, Edinboro rallied with 25-22 and 25-21 triumphs in the third and fourth sets to even the score at 2-2. The Warriors overcame the Fighting Scots' comeback and edged Edinboro in the fifth set, 15-13 to earn the 3-2 win.
 
Maycock tallied 15 kills to lead the Fighting Scots, while Gruber added 11 kills. Marett posted a team-high 24 digs, followed by Litwiler with 15 digs, Maycock with 12 and Trathen with 10 digs.
 
Trathen paced Edinboro with 36 assists in the loss.
 
The Fighting Scots return to action on Tuesday, September 9 at Point Park. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
