EDINBORO, Pa. (November 4, 2015) - Fresh off a 3-1 victory over Slippery Rock on senior night, the first-place Edinboro University volleyball team will make a couple stops in Erie this weekend to face local PSAC rivals in crucial late-season contests. The Fighting Scots take on Mercyhurst on Friday, November 6 at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, November 7, they visit Gannon for a 2 p.m. match.
The Fighting Scots sit at 28-2 overall and 17-1 in PSAC play. They enter the weekend riding a 15-game winning streak, just one game short of tying the record held by the 2010 team that won 16 in a row. With either a win or a Gannon loss, the Fighting Scots will clinch the number one seed in the PSAC West playoffs.
Mercyhurst enters the weekend at 14-15 overall and 9-9 in PSAC play. The Lakers are on a three game losing skid in which all three matches have gone to a fifth set. Edinboro was victorious in the last meeting, winning in four hotly-contested sets by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 14-25 and 25-23.
Gannon comes into Saturday's contest sitting in second place in the PSAC West with a 20-7 overall record and a 13-5 mark in conference action. The Lady Knights are searching for their third win in a row having just beaten Mercyhurst and Seton Hill. Edinboro earned a 3-0 victory in the last meeting with Gannon, winning in three sets by scores of 25-18 , 25-20 and 25-23.
The Fighting Scots are led offensively by the duo of sophomore
Challen Litwiler and junior
Victoria Severo. Litwiler has recorded a team-high 391 kills, while Severo has totaled 277 and a squad-leading .334 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter
Sydney Trathen paces the Edinboro attack with 1,055 assists. Trathen ranks ninth in all-time career assists with 1848.
Senior
Marah Maycock leads the Fighting Scots defense with 474 digs. Maycock ranks among the top in a few categories including fifth in career digs (1,513), third in games played (483) and seventh in service aces (142). Litwiler and freshman
Megan Screptock rank second and third on the squad with 374 and 259 digs, respectively. Severo has totaled a team-high 87 total blocks, including a team-leading 75 block assists, while fellow junior
Latoya Hutchinson leads the team with 15 block solos. Hutchinson also ranks third on the team with 211 kills. Unfortunately she missed the team's last contest with an injury.
