WICHITA, Kan. (January 15, 2016) – The Edinboro University wheelchair basketball team split a pair of games on the first day of the Wichita State Tournament Friday, defeating Auburn in their first game, 51-43, and falling to Texas Arlington, 72-34. The Fighting Scots stand at 7-11 on the season.
Edinboro 51, Auburn 43Mike Adams scored a game-high 27 points, going 12-for-22 from the field, and finished third on the team with five rebounds.
Mikhail Prosence led the Scots with 10 boards while
Derek Strickland contributed seven points and nine rebounds. Despite 14 first-half points from Adams, Auburn shot 42.9 percent for the first half (12-for-28) and led at halftime, 26-21. They were backed by eight points from Hunter Olvis, seven points by Blake Loftin, and four assists by Jared Rehmn. The Scots opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 31-26 lead with 13:45 to go in the game. Despite never regaining the lead and shooting 29.2 percent (7-for-24) in the second half, Auburn would remain close with Edinboro over the next nine minutes. Auburn pulled to within two points of Edinboro's lead at 43-41 with 4:04 remaining, but the Scots closed the game out on an 8-2 run to pull away with the win. Edinboro shot 35.0 percent for the game (21-for-60) while Auburn finished shooting 36.5 percent (19-for-72).
Texas Arlington 72, Edinboro 34Edinboro was held to 27.5 shooting (14-for-51) for the game. After going 3-for-23 in the first half, the Fighting Scots improved in the second half to shoot 11-for-28. But it was not enough to catch up to Texas Arlington's 58.9 field goal percentage for the contest (33-for-56). Edinboro led once in the game after a 3-pointer by
Ayuba Alli to put the Scots up, 3-2, with 19:16 to go in the first half. Texas Arlington responded with a 14-2 run, followed by a 15-0 run to lead at the half, 35-7. The Scots committed nine turnovers in the opening half, which Texas Arlington cashed in for 12 points. The Fighting Scots picked things up in the second half, scoring 27 points, but Texas Arlington continued their hot shooting to take the victory, going 17-for-29 in the closing half. Jan Gans had 23 points for Texas Arlington while Fabian Reme had a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. Alli led the Scots with nine points, going 3-for-9 from the field and 2-for-4 from behind the arc.
Mike Adams was second on the team with eight points and four rebounds while Kevin Athlerley pulled down a team-high six boards.
Derek Strickland dished out a team-high five assists.
The Fighting Scots will continue play Saturday for the second day of the Wichita State Tournament.
