Fighting Scots Travel to Seton Hill in Search of Fifth Straight Win

GAME STORY
The Edinboro University women's basketball team enters the weekend seeking its longest winning streak of the season as they travel to Seton Hill for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Saturday. The Fighting Scots enter the contest riding a four-game winning streak, the second four-game winning streak of the season.
 
Edinboro comes into the game with a 13-6 overall record and an 8-5 mark in PSAC play. The Fighting Scots are fresh off a 73-54 victory over defending national champion California (Pa.). The Griffins enter the contest at 10-9 overall and at 6-7 in the West. Seton Hill has dropped two of its last three contests, including a 64-49 defeat at the hands of Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday
 
The Griffins come into the contest seeking their first-ever win against the Fighting Scots, coming up short in all 13 meetings. The Fighting Scots won all three meetings last season, a PSAC Tournament first round matchup. All 13 meetings have been decided by double figures.

The Fighting Scots average 70.0 ppg., good for eighth in the PSAC, while allowing 64.1 ppg., which ranks seventh. Edinboro ranks among the leaders in Division II in several categories. The Fighting Scots are sixth in total assists (319), 10th in total rebounds (796), and 17th in total blocks (84). Those figures all lead the PSAC.
 
First-year Fighting Scot Katie Fischer continues her impressive start at Edinboro. The transfer from Mercyhurst is tied for the team lead and ranks ninth in the PSAC in scoring with 16.5 ppg. Fischer leads the PSAC and ranks fourth in Division II with 6.7 assists per game and is third in the nation with 128 total assists. Fischer has recorded four double-digit assist games this season, including 11 vs Cal on Wednesday, and posted five double-doubles. She also ranks seventh in the PSAC with 41 3-pointers made and is sixth in 3-point field goal percentage (36.9 pct.).
 
Senior Aignee' Freeland ranks ninth on Edinboro's all-time scoring list with 1,386 points. She also recently entered the top three in career rebounds, and is currently third all-time with 869 boards. Heather Gates (1,301) and Montique Wade (1,113) rank first and second, respectively. Freeland is also sixth all-time in career blocks with 112. She ranks tenth in the PSAC in scoring (16.5 ppg.) and ninth in rebounding. (8.6 rpg.). Freeland has recorded seven double-doubles this season, good for fifth in the PSAC.
 
Senior Lauren Hippo is just 25 points away from joining the 1,000 point club. She has scored in double figures in four of the past five games and scored a season-high 23 points in the win against California (Pa.) to boost her career total to 975 points. She ranks among the all-time 3-point shooters in Edinboro history. Hippo is ranked first all-time in 3-point percentage, shooting 39.9 percent. Hippo ranks fifth in career 3-pointers made (161) and seventh in career 3-pointers attempted (404).
 
Since returning from an injury that forced her to miss the first nine games, Nicole Johnson has been a consistent presence on the boards. The junior forward is fourth on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.9 rpg. Johnson has started all but three games since her return and averages 17.1 minutes per game. She was third on the team in rebounding last season, averaging 5.1 rpg., while appearing in all 28 contests for the Fighting Scots.

Last Meeting2014-15 – at Edinboro 68, Seton Hill 53 (PSAC Tournament First Round)
After sweeping the season series with the Griffins, Edinboro came out on top for the third time, this time with a trip to the PSAC Quarterfinals on the line. The Fighting Scots never trailed in the contest and jumped out to a double-digit lead for good less than eight minutes into the game. Holding a slim 5-4 lead with 16:40 left in the first half, the Fighting Scots scored 10 unanswered points, eight by Lauren Hippo, to take a 15-4 lead. Edinboro would lead by as many as 18 points in the first half and it would increase to 20 in the second half when Laurel Lindsay knocked down a 3-pointer with 14:33 remaining. Hippo led the Fighting Scots with 17 points. Nicole Johnson recorded a career-high 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to complete the double-double. Lindsay totaled 11 points and dished out eight assists. Chelsea Apkea was the lone Griffin to score in double figures, finishing with 14 points.
 
LAST TIME OUT
January 20, 2016 – at Edinboro 73, California (Pa.) 54
After losing by at least 25 points in the last three meetings with the Vulcans, the Fighting Scots snapped a three-game losing streak to the Vulcans with a  73-54 victory on Wednesday night. The Vulcans jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the first quarter as they held Edinboro scoreless for just over three minutes to begin the game. Cal took a 14-10 lead into the second quarter, but the Fighting Scots used a big second period, outscoring the Vulcans 27-15, for a 37-29 halftime lead. The Vulcans cut the lead to just three points with 2:48 remaining in the third quarter following a 5-0 run, but Edinboro answered back with a 7-2 run of its own to close out the third. The Fighting Scots separated themselves for good in the fourth quarter as they closed out the game on a 19-2 run. Aignee' Freeland  led the Fighting Scots with 26 points and added 13 rebounds to complete the double-double. Katie Fischer also registered a double-double, totaling 15 points and 11 assists. Lauren Hippo added a season-high 23 points and grabbed eight boards. Whitney Allen came off the bench to grab 12 rebounds.
 
January 20, 2016 – at Indiana (Pa.) 64, Seton Hill 49
Four Crimson Hawks scored in double figures as Seton Hill fell at Indiana (Pa.), 64-49. IUP led from start to finish, jumping out to a 7-0 lead with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter. The Crimson Hawks held the Griffins to single digits scoring in the first two quarters, allowing just seven points in each period for a nine point halftime lead. IUP went on a 13-0 run to take a 20-point lead with 3:06 remaining in the third period. Seton Hill surged late in the game, outscoring the Crimson Hawks 21-16 in the final period, but still could only cut it as close as 11 points. Jenna Kaufman was the lone Griffin to score in double figures, finishing with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Griffins outrebounded the Crimson Hawks 37-34, but turned the ball over 20 times to IUP's seven, which the Crimson Hawks turned into 20 points off turnovers.
 
The Head Coaches
 
Edinboro: Stan Swank (Purdue '76, 526-289, 29th year)
Swank is in his 29th season as the head coach at Edinboro and ranks as the all-time winningest coach in PSAC history and is also the longest tenured. He owns a career record of 526-289 at Edinboro, and over the previous five seasons Edinboro had a 125-27 record.  The Fighting Scots seek their seventh straight PSAC Tournament appearance and have won three PSAC championships during that five-year span, the last coming in 2014. Swank entered the 2015-16 season tied for 12th among active Division II coaches in victories.  That figure is tied for 24th all-time in overall victories. He ranks 35th in career winning percentage (.645).  Edinboro finished with a 20-8 record a year ago, the fifth straight season with 20-or-more wins and the 11th in Swank's career. He guided the Fighting Scots to a 16-6 record in the PSAC West, good for fourth place. Edinboro defeated Seton Hill, 68-53, in the first round of the PSAC Tournament before suffering a 71-63 loss to Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. The Fighting Scots qualified for the PSAC Tournament for the sixth straight year and 11th time in the last 12 years.
 
Seton Hill: Mark Katarski (Pittsburgh, 35-40, 3rd year; Career Record: 90-142, 9th year)
Katarski is in his third season at the helm of the Griffins. Katarski took over Seton Hill its inaugural season in the PSAC conference and secured a spot in the PSAC Tournament in his 2013-14 debut season. He once again took the Griffins to the PSAC Tournament in 2014-15. Katarski has recorded more victories in his first two full seasons than the previous four head coaches at Seton Hill. Under Katarski's leadership, the Griffins are successful off the court as well, leading all 18 PSAC women's basketball teams and placing sixth on the WBCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Academic Honor Roll.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Aignee' Freeland (F, 6'3", Sr.) – a two-time All-PSAC West selection, Freeland joined the 1,000-point club as a junior, and ranks ninth in career scoring with 1,386 points and third in career rebounds with 869. Freeland leads Edinboro in rebounding and is tied for the lead in scoring, averaging 16.5 ppg. and 8.6 rpg. She ranks tenth in the PSAC in scoring and ninth in rebounding. Freeland posted her third straight and seventh total double-double of the season in Wednesday's win over California (Pa.), totaling 26 points and grabbing 13 boards. Her seven double-double's rank fifth in the PSAC.

Lauren Hippo (G, 5'10", Sr.) – the 5'10" senior is one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC and school history, ranking first in career 3-point field goal percentage (39.9), fifth in career 3-pointers made (161), along with seventh in career 3-pointers attempted (404). Hippo has 975 career points and is just 25 points away from joining fellow senior Aignee' Freeland in the 1,000-point club. Hippois third on the team in scoring at 12.2 ppg. while making 38-of-123 3-pointers. She also ranks third on the team with 5.0 rpg. Hippo has scored in double figures in four of the last five games, including scoring a season-high 23 points against Cal on Wednesday.
 
Katie Fischer (G, 5'7", Jr.) – the transfer from Mercyhurst is in her first season at Edinboro and continues her impressive start as a Fighting Scot, averaging 16.5 ppg. That figure is good for ninth in the PSAC. In addition, Fischer leads the PSAC and is fourth in Division II with 6.7 assists per game and ranks third in the nation with 128 total assists. She ranks seventh in the PSAC with 41 3-pointers made and sixth in 3-point percentage at 36.9 percent. In the win over Cal, Fischer picked up her fifth double-double of the season and recorded her fourth game with double-digit assists as she totaled 15 points and dished out 11 assists.
 
SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS
Seton Hill has qualified for the PSAC Tournament both seasons since joining the conference in 2013-14. The Griffins were forced to replace their top three scorers from last season. Seton Hill averages 60.8 ppg., ranking 17th in the PSAC, but give up just 62.3 ppg., which ranks third in the PSAC.
Seton Hill leads the PSAC in defensive rebounds per game, averaging 29 defensive boards per game. The Griffins also rank second in 3-pt. field goal defense (28.9 percent) and third in field goal percentage defense (37.7 percent)
 
Jharrin Gill is the lone senior on the Griffins and the only remaining player who started all 29 games last season. The 5'5'' guard directs the Seton Hill offense, averaging 3.5 assists per game from her point guard spot.
 
Sophomore Jenna Kaufman leads the Griffins in scoring, averaging 9.3 ppg. Seton Hill is without a double-figure scorer. Jjunior Mariah Wells is the squad's leading rebounder, averaging 6.3 rpg. along with scoring 9.1 ppg.
 
Former Villa Maria standout Lindsey Misfud is the Griffins' third leading scorer, averaging 8.6 ppg. Misfud was a teammate of Edinboro's Allison Thompson at Villa Maria.

Senior Lauren Hippo is just 25 points away from joining fellow senior Aignee' Freeland in the 1,000-point club after scoring a season-high 23 points against Cal. AIGNEE' FREELAND CRACKS TOP TEN IN CAREER SCORING, THIRD IN CAREER REBOUNDS
Aignee' Freeland joined the 1,000-point club as a junior and recently moved into ninth all-time on the career points list with a 26-point effort against California (Pa.). Freeland has been a force to be reckoned with on the glass her entire career and this season is no different.
