RANKINGS: InterMat/Flowrestling
The Match Stories
A youthful Edinboro wrestling team opens the 2016-17 campaign on Saturday at Virginia Tech. The Fighting Scots come off an 8-11 finish a year ago, winning the EWL regular season crown before finishing in a tie for 32nd place at the NCAA Division I National Championships. It will be a new-look Edinboro squad, as head coach
Tim Flynn's squad returns just four starters. However, all four are returning national qualifiers and are nationally-ranked in the preseason polls. Flynn will send a young group of wrestlers to the mat at Cassell Coliseum, with potentially two freshmen and two redshirt freshmen, plus a sophomore and two redshirt sophomores in the anticipated lineup.
Chase Delande is the lone senior in the lineup, and the redshirt senior is in his first year as a starter at 157 lbs. Virginia Tech comes off the best season in program history after finishing fourth at Nationals. The Hokies were 16-2 and enjoyed an undefeated ACC season a year ago. They enter the year ranked fourth by FloWrestling and sixth by InterMat in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches' Poll. Nine NCAA qualifiers, six All-Americans and two defending ACC champions return. VTU faces Edinboro and VMI on Saturday.
Edinboro will remain in Virginia on Sunday, November 6 to compete in the Southeast Open in Roanoke, Va. Civic Center. Hosted by Virginia Tech, the tournament was formerly the Hokie Open. A total of 20 Edinboro wrestlers are expected to compete, including the starters from the day before.
The Fighting Scots will return home to face former EWL-rival Pittsburgh on Sunday, November 13 in the home opener at McComb Fieldhouse.
THE VIRGINIA TECH SERIES
EDINBORO LEADS 7-6-1
The Hokies have won six of the last seven meetings with Edinboro, including a 29-7 triumph last year at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro claimed a 27-9 victory in the second of two meetings in 2013-14 after five straight losses to Virginia Tech.

THE COACHES
EDINBORO -- Tim Flynn (Penn State '86) is in his 20th season as the helm of the Fighting Scots. He has elevated the Edinboro program to one of the best in the country, compiling a 206-84-5 record. Edinboro has had 13 top-20 finishes and five in the top ten at the NCAA Division I National Championships during his tenure. That includes the two best finishes in school history in 2014 and 2015. The Fighting Scots made the podium for the first time at Nationals with a third place showing two years ago, and in 2014 they were fifth. He has produced three national champions and 37 All-Americans. All told, Flynn has been named the EWL Coach of the Year seven times and the PSAC Coach of the Year 13 times. Three years ago, Flynn captured nearly every Coach of the Year award, including being named the NWCA NCAA Division I Coach of the Year, WIN's Dan Gable Coach of the Year, and was InterMat's Co-Coach of the Year along with Minnesota's J Robinson.
VIRGINIA TECH -- Kevin Dresser (Iowa '86) is in his 11th season in charge of the VTU program. During that period his teams have posted dual meet records of 142-50. He's coached 10 wrestlers to six All-American medals and led VTU to a pair of ACC tournament titles (2013 and 2014). He was named the ACC Coach of the Year the last three years (2013, 2014, and 2015). He is only the second coach in league history to win the honor three consecutive times. VTU has finished in the top ten nationally each of the last three years. Last year's squad came in tenth at Nationals and produced four All-Americans.
