GAME STORYLINES
  • The Fighting Scots conclude the 2016 portion of their schedule hosting second-ranked California(Pa.) on Friday, December 30, looking to usher in the New Year with a bang.
  • Friday's matchup features a pair of PSAC Western Division powerhouses. Over the past five seasons, both teams have won the PSAC Championship twice, with California taking the past two and Edinboro reigning supreme in 2012 and 2014.
  • The Fighting Scots have notched a 145-37 record over the past six seasons, while the Vulcans are 124-43 over the same period. Edinboro made a trip to the Elite Eight in 2011-12 and California won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2015.
  • Friday's contest will showcase two teams that rank in the top three in the PSAC in both offense and defense. The Vulcans rank first in scoring offense (84.5 ppg.) and second in scoring defense (55.8 ppg.), while the Fighting Scots rank second in scoring offense (74.8 ppg.) and third in scoring defense (58.1).
  • The opening of PSAC West divisional play features the two hottest teams in the conference.  The Fighting Scots have run off nine straight victories, while the Vulcans have opened the season with 11 straight wins.
  • The Fighting Scots enter Friday's contest looking for their tenth straight victory. Edinboro has run off nine straight wins after an 0-2 start at the Carol Eckman Memorial Tournament. The nine-game winning streak is the longest since the 2013-14 squad also ran off nine wins in a row.
  • Edinboro has won 13 straight home games in the friendly confines of McComb Fieldhouse, dating back to last season. That is the longest streak since the 2011-12 squad reeled off 18 straight at home. The Fighting Scots are 6-0 at home this year after amassing a 64-11 home record over the past five seasons.
  • The Fighting Scots have also started 5-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2011-12 season. They finished that season 30-2 overall and 21-1 in the conference, as well as capturing the PSAC Championship and advancing to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship.

The Fighting Scots led for three quarters against the top-seeded and defending National Champion Vulcans in the PSAC Quarterfinals matchup, but turnovers eventually caught up to Edinboro as they fell short in their upset bid. The Fighting Scots would take their first double-digit lead of the contest at 51-41 thanks to a 6-0 run with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter, but the Vulcans would respond with a 10-4 run to end the third period. Cal began the final quarter using a 12-2 run to take a 65-59 lead with 6:55 remaining in the game. Edinboro would cut the deficit to 69-67 with 3:37 remaining, but were held scoreless the remainder of the game. The Fighting Scots turned the ball over 20 times in the loss. Michelle Jahn led Edinboro with 24 points, while Katie Fischer added 17 points and dished out seven assists. Whitney Allen was the Fighting Scots' top rebounder with 10 boards. Precious Martin led a group of four Vulcans scorers in double figures, finishing with 20. Miki Glenn added 18 points. Paige Wright totaled 14 points, while Shatara Parsons chipped in 11.
Series Notes: The Vulcans have won five of the last six meetings.
 


THE COACHES
Edinboro: Stan Swank (Purdue '76, 542-294, 30th year)
  • Head coach Stan Swank is in his 30th year as head women's basketball coach at Edinboro.
  • Swank has guided the Fighting Scots to a 145-37 record the past six seasons, including six PSAC Tournament appearances, three PSAC Championships, three NCAA Tournament berths and a trip to the Elite Eight.
  • Winning is nothing to Swank as he is the winningest coach in Fighting Scots history and has had 23 winning seasons during his 29-year tenure while compiling a 542-294 overall mark. Add in four seasons as the head coach at Parkland Junior College, and Swank has 646 career collegiate victories.
  • All told under Swank, Edinboro has reached the NCAA Division II playoffs ten times, with Edinboro qualifying for the PSAC postseason tournament 21 times. On ten of those occasions, the Fighting Scots have advanced to the championship game, winning the PSAC title in 1989-90, 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2013-14.
  • In the NCAA Tournament, Swank has guided the Fighting Scots to the Final 32 four times, the Sweet 16 three times and the Elite Eight twice.
  • Swank entered the 2016-17 campaign tied for 11th among active Division II coaches in wins with 533. That figure is tied for 22nd all-time in overall victories. He ranks 37th in active career winning percentage (.646). Swank is the longest-tenured coach in the PSAC and is also the all-time leader in wins among PSAC coaches.
 
California(Pa.): Jess Strom (Penn State '05, 122-35, 6th year)
  • Head coach Jess Strom already ranks third all-time in career victories at Cal. She entered the 2016-17 season with a 111-35 overall record through her first five years. That includes back-to-back PSAC Championships in 2014-15 and 15-16 as well as a National Championship in 14-15.
  • Under Strom, the Vulcans have won 20-or-more games and appeared in the PSAC Tournament all five years.
  • A Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League Hall of Famer, Strom previously served as an assistant coach at Appalachian State before serving in the same capacity for the Vulcans.
  • Strom was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and a 1,000-point scorer during her playing days as a Nittany Lion.

LAST TIME OUT
Edinboro: December 19, 2016 – Edinboro 72, Fairmont State 68 (RECAP / BOX SCORE)
  • Despite a slow start that saw Fairmont State jump out to a 13-0 lead, the Fighting Scots were able to overcome the early struggles to notch their ninth straight victory.
  • After missing their first 13 shots of the contest, the Fighting Scots would end the opening quarter on a 13-2 run sparked by a JaVannah Jackson jumper. Edinboro would take a 35-32 lead into half and led 56-49 after three quarters.
  • After taking their largest lead of the game at 60-50 early in the fourth quarter, the Fighting Scots saw Fairmont State run off 12 straight points to take the lead at 62-60 with just under four minutes to play.
  • Jontay Walton knotted the score at 66-66 before her steal and score gave Edinboro the lead for good at 68-66. A pair of free throws by Nicole Johnson and Michaela Barnes iced the contest for the Fighting Scots.
  • Katie Fischer led the Fighting Scots with 18 points, as well as totaling six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Walton matched her season-high with 14 points and picked up three steals. Ciara Rosten added 13 points and seven boards before fouling out late in the game. 
  • The Fighting Scots won the rebound battle, 46-35, and forced Fairmont State into 21 turnovers while committing just 13. Edinboro held a 22-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
California(Pa.): December 18, 2016 – #2 California 80, Bloomsburg 45 (RECAP / BOX SCORE)
  • Thanks in part to a dominating first quarter, the second-ranked Vulcans cruised to an 80-45 victory on the road at Bloomsburg.
  • Leading 8-4 with 4:19 remaining in the first quarter, California scored the next 20 points to take a 28-4 lead with 9:20 remaining in the first half.
  • The Vulcans led by as many as 35 points in the third quarter as they recorded their fifth victory of the season by over 30 points.
  • Junior Seairra Barrett led the Vulcans in scoring with 16 points. She also added five rebounds and three steals in 20 minutes of action.
  • Senior Miki Glenn added 14 points, six assists, four boards and five steals while Shatara Parsons finished with 15 points and five rebounds.
  • California held a 45-30 advantage on the glass, including 17 offensive rebounds. The forced Bloomsburg into 27 turnovers, which they cashed in for 31 points.

EDINBORO STORYLINES
  • The Fighting Scots have won nine straight since an 0-2 start to the season, including starting PSAC play with a 5-0 ledger for the first time since the 2011-12 season. They finished that season 30-2 overall and 21-1 in the conference, as well as capturing the PSAC Championship and advancing to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship.
  • The nine-game winning streak is the longest since the 2013-14 squad also ran off nine in a row.
  • Edinboro has won 13 straight home games in the friendly confines of McComb Fieldhouse dating back to last season. The Fighting Scots are 6-0 at home this season after amassing a 64-11 record at home over the past five seasons.
  • The Edinboro defense has held opponents under 60 points in seven of their nine wins. and rank third in the PSAC in scoring defense at 58.1 ppg.
  • The Fighting Scots have recorded at least 10 steals in all but two games this season. Edinboro's 149 total steals ranks second in the PSAC and eighth in Division II. In addition, Edinboro has forced the opposing team into over 20 turnovers all but twice as well. Opponents average 24.0 turnovers per game against Edinboro while the Fighting Scots average just 13.8. The Fighting Scots rank 12th in the nation in forcing turnovers and fourth in turnover margin (+10.2).
  • PSAC West Preseason selection Katie Fischer leads the Edinboro offense from her point guard spot. A 2015-16 PSAC West second team selection, Fischer ranks 12th in the PSAC at 14.7 ppg. The senior leads Edinboro with 41 assists and is second with 26 steals. Fischer finished with 18 points in last week's win over Fairmont State after failing to score in double figures the previous three outings.
  • Sophomore Michelle Jahn continues to rank among the top 3-pt. shooters in the PSAC. Jahn ranks fourth in 3-pointers (28) and seventh in 3-pt. percentage (39.4 pct.). She finished her freshman campaign third in the PSAC with 71 3-pointers and second with a 40.8 3-pt. percentage.
  • Junior transfer Ciara Rosten has scored in double figures in each of the past six outings, including recording her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Cheyney. The 6'2'' forward has scored in double figures in all but three contests this season. She ranks third on the team with 11.1 ppg. and leads the squad with 6.6 rpg.
  • Freshman Michaela Barnes has garnered a pair PSAC West Freshmen of the Week honors so far this season. The 5'6'' guard has started every game this season, averaging 8.5 ppg. and 2.1 rpg., as well as dishing out 1.5 assists per game. Barnes has scored in double-figures in four contests this year.
  • Led by the duo of Jontay Walton and Maggie Moore, bench play has been a huge advantage for the Fighting Scots this season. Walton is averaging 8.1 ppg. and 3.3 rpg. Walton also leads Edinboro and ranks third in the PSAC with 27 steals. Moore has registered 4.1 ppg. and 6.4 rpg. in 16.8 mpg. The bench has scored over 15 points in all but one game this season and has totaled 40-or-more in two of the past three outings.

CALIFORNIA(PA) STORYLINES
  • The PSAC West favorite Vulcans have lived up to all the hype so far this season. California enters Friday's contest undefeated at 11-0 and ranked second in the WBCA National Poll. They have lost just one game in their past 26 outings dating back to last season.
  • Cal returns four starters from a squad that finished 25-6 and took home the PSAC Crown last season
  • The Vulcans boast one of the top scoring offenses in Division II. They rank sixth in the nation at 84.5 ppg. and lead Division II in turnover margin (+13.8) and turnovers forced per game (29.1). The Vulcans rank tenth in assists per game at 18.4. California has won all but one of their games this season by at least 15 points, including five victories by over 30 points.
  • California boasts four double figure scorers in the starting lineup led by WBCA All-American and 2015-16 PSAC West Athlete of the Year, Miki Glenn. The senior guard ranks third in the PSAC in scoring at 17.4 ppg. Glenn has scored in double figures in all 11 contests this year, including scoring 20 points in five outings. In addition, Glenn ranks third in the nation in total assists (80) and assists per game (7.3)
  • The Vulcans boast another top-three scorer in the PSAC in forward Seairra Barrett. Barrett leads the PSAC at 18.8 ppg. The reigning PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year also ranks second in the PSAC in field goal percentage (62.4 pct.).
  • Cal has received a boost from the return of redshirt-senior Lana Doran. Doran missed the 2015-16 season after suffering an injury during the preseason. The 5'10'' guard was a vital member of the Vulcans squad that captured the National Championship in 2014-15, starting all 36 games. Doran ranks third on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg.
