Wheelchair Basketball Goes 1-2 on the First Day of the Illinois Tournament

CHAMPAIGN, IL (February 12, 2016) – The Edinboro University wheelchair basketball team concluded day one of the Illinois Tournament, going 1-2 in the day of action. The Fighting Scots dropped the first two games of the day against Alabama and Illinois before defeating Wisconsin Whitewater in the final game of the night.
 
UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA 51, EDINBORO 34
After Derek Strickland scored the first basket of the game, Alabama responded with eight unanswered points to take the lead for good with 16:11 remaining in the first half. Blake Rush led Edinboro with 10 points, while Ayuba Alli contributed eight. Mike Adams dished out a game-high seven assists in the loss. Edinboro shot 32 percent from the field and was outrebounded 32-19.
 
UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS 49, EDINBORO 30
The Fighting Scots got off to another slow start as Illinois raced out to a 23-8 lead midway through the first half. Edinboro would trail by double digits for all but 10 minutes of the game. The Fighting Scots struggled from the field, shooting just 23.6 percent. Kevin Atherley led the Edinboro offense with 11 points off the bench. Derek Strickland added nine points and five rebounds.
 
EDINBORO 60, WISCONSIN WHITEWATER 19
Unlike the first two contests of the day, it was Edinboro who jumped out to a big lead early on. The Fighting Scots scored the first six points of the contest and led 26-9 heading into halftime. Edinboro opened the second half on a 22-2 run and grew the lead to as many as 41 points. The Fighting Scots shot 46.9 percent from the field, while holding Wisconsin Whitewater to just 22.5 percent shooting. Edinboro also forced 17 turnovers. Kevin Atherley and Mike Adams were tied for the team lead with 12 points apiece. Dererk Strickland added eight points and eight rebounds.
