The Fighting Scots will make stop number two of a three-game road trip this Saturday, traveling to Indiana (Pa.). It will be the second meeting between the two teams this season with IUP taking the first go-around in Edinboro, 74-59.
The Fighting Scots have won seven of their last eight games, including a double-digit victory over defending National Champion and first place California (Pa.) on January 20.
The Fighting Scots are in fourth place in the PSAC West with a 16-7 record and an 11-6 mark in conference play. The remaining five games on the schedule are all rematches with PSAC foes from earlier this season. Edinboro is just two games back of first place California (Pa.), and just one behind both Gannon and Indiana (Pa.). The Fighting Scots are also three games up on sixth-place Seton Hill as Edinboro enters a critical stretch of must win games to clinch a seventh straight PSAC Tournament appearance.
The Crimson Hawks enter the contest at 15-6 overall and one game ahead of Edinboro at 12-5 in the PSAC West. Indiana (Pa.) has lost two of its last three games, including a 75-55 upset loss at the hands of Mercyhurst this past Wednesday and a 57-44 loss to California (Pa.) on January 27.
In the season's first meeting, the Fighting Scots shooting struggles highlighted a 74-59 home loss to the Crimson Hawks. Edinboro shot a then season-low 30.3 percent (20-of-66) from the field, including going 4-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Fighting Scots also look to do a better job on the boards the second time around as Indiana (Pa.) held a 44-37 advantage on the glass. Edinboro comes into Saturday's contest with the second-best rebound margin in the conference at +5.8, while the Crimson Hawks rank seventh at +0.9.
The Fighting Scots enters Saturday's contest with Indiana (Pa.) looking to avoid a second straight season sweep at the hands of the Crimson Hawks. Indiana (Pa.) won all three meetings last season, including a 71-63 victory in the PSAC Quarterfinals. Edinboro had swept the Crimson Hawks each of the past three seasons, recording eight straight wins, before suffering the three losses last year.
The Fighting Scots average 69.1 ppg., good for ninth in the PSAC, while allowing 63.3 ppg., which ranks sixth. Indiana (Pa.) comes into the contest averaging 69.8 ppg., which is sixth in the PSAC, while allowing 62.4 ppg., good for fourth.
Edinboro ranks among the leaders in Division II in several categories. The Fighting Scots are ninth in total assists (369), tenth in total blocks (110), and 12th in total rebounds (954). Those figures all lead the PSAC.

A cold shooting night highlighted a 74-59 drubbing at home against the Crimson Hawks. The Fighting Scots shot a then season-low 30.3 percent (20-of-66) from the field, including missing a season-high 18-of-22 3-pointers. Leading 35-30 at halftime, the Crimson Hawks scored the first six points of the second half to build their lead to 41-30 less than two minutes into the third quarter and led by double-figures most of the closing quarter. The Fighting Scots could only muster 11 fourth quarter points as the IUP lead grew to as many as 19 points in the final period.
Aignee' Freeland led the Fighting Scots with 20 points, while
Michelle Jahn added 18.
Lauren Hippo was the final Fighting Scot in double-digits, adding 11 points.
Katie Fischer was held to a season-low six points. Zhane Brooks posted a double-double with 20 points and a career-high 16 boards. Marina Wareham added 14 points, while Brittany Robinson came off the bench to contribute 10.
LAST TIME OUTFebruary 3, 2016 –Edinboro 78, at Slippery Rock 70For the second straight outing, the Fighting Scots recorded a season sweep of a PSAC opponent, this time defeating Slippery Rock, 78-70, at home. Edinboro scored a season-high 36 points from the free throw line as well as a season-high 46 second-half points to hold off The Rock.
Michelle Jahn hit three first-quarter 3-pointers as Edinboro took an 11-7 lead in the first quarter which grew to 32-25 by halftime. Leading 49-33 at the beginning of the fourth-quarter, Edinboro put up 29 fourth quarter points to close out The Rock. The Fighting Scots scored 21 of those 29 points, including their final 15 points, from the free throw line as Edinboro was 21-of-27 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. Jahn led four Fighting Scots in double-figures with 21 points.
Aignee' Freeland recorded her ninth double-double of the year, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Katie Fischer finished with 17 points, while
Lauren Hippo added 13. The Fighting Scots dominated on the glass as well, holding a 47-32 rebound margin.
February 3, 2016 – at Mercyhurst 75, Indiana (Pa.) 55The Crimson Hawks couldn't overcome a poor shooting night and a tough middle stretch as Mercyhurst pulled off the 75-55 upset in Erie. IUP shot just 38.5 percent from the floor and could only muster a combined 23 points in the second and third quarters. It was the third straight game the Crimson Hawks were held to 55 points or less. IUP scored the first four points of the game, but that was the only time they would hold the lead as the Lakers took the lead for good four minutes into the opening quarter. Zhane Brooks led a trio of Crimson Hawks in double-figures, scoring 15 points. Megan Smith added 14 points, while freshman Carolyn Appleby came off the bench to total 10 points. IUP was dominated on the boards, losing on the glass to the Lakers, 35-23.
The Head Coaches Edinboro: Stan Swank (Purdue '76, 529-290, 29th year)Swank is in his 29
th season as the head coach at Edinboro and ranks as the all-time winningest coach in PSAC history and is also the longest tenured. He owns a career record of 529-290 at Edinboro, and over the previous five seasons Edinboro had a 125-27 record. The Fighting Scots seek their seventh straight PSAC Tournament appearance and have won three PSAC championships during that five-year span, the last coming in 2014. Swank entered the 2015-16 season tied for 12
th among active Division II coaches in victories. That figure is tied for 24
th all-time in overall victories. He ranks 35
th in career winning percentage (.645). Edinboro finished with a 20-8 record a year ago, the fifth straight season with 20-or-more wins and the 11
th in Swank's career. He guided the Fighting Scots to a 16-6 record in the PSAC West, good for fourth place. Edinboro defeated Seton Hill, 68-53, in the first round of the PSAC Tournament before suffering a 71-63 loss to Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. The Fighting Scots qualified for the PSAC Tournament for the sixth straight year and 11th time in the last 12 years.
Indiana (Pa.): Tom McConnell (Point Park '84, 57-20, 3rd year; Career Record: 140-125, 10th year)Head coach Tom McConnell is in his third season at Indiana (Pa.). McConnell has recorded PSAC postseason appearances in each of his first two years as well as an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2014-15. The Crimson Hawks were 25-4 last season and ranked as high as fifth in the Division II national rankings. McConell led the Crimson Hawks to their first PSAC West title since 2008. Prior to IUP, McConell spent seven seasons as the head coach of St. Francis University's (Pa.) men's basketball team.

TOP RESERVESPLAYERS TO WATCHAignee' Freeland (F, 6'3", Sr.) – a two-time All-PSAC West selection, Freeland joined the 1,000-point club as a junior. The senior forward ranks seventh on Edinboro's all-time scoring list with 1,439 career points. She is also third all-time in career rebounds with 907 boards. Heather Gates (1,301) and Montique Wade (1,113) rank first and second, respectively. Freeland is also fifth all-time in career blocks with 128. The 6'3'' forward leads the PSAC with 44 blocks this season. She also ranks seventh in the PSAC in both scoring (16.2 ppg.) and rebounding (8.7 rpg.). Freeland has recorded nine double-doubles this season, good for fifth in the PSAC.
Lauren Hippo (G, 5'10", Sr.) – the 5'10" senior recorded her 1,000
th career point recently at Gannon, joining fellow senior
Aignee' Freeland in the 1,000-point club. Fittingly, her 1,000th career-point came off a 3-pointer. She is 29
th on the all-time scoring list with 1,022 points and ranks among the all-time 3-point shooters in Edinboro history. Hippo is ranked second all-time in 3-point percentage at 39.1 percent, fifth in career 3-pointers made (168) and sixth in career 3-pointers attempted (430). She is ninth in the PSAC with 45 3-pointers made and tenth with a 30.2 3-pt. percentage while averaging 12.1 ppg, however, she has missed her last 13 3-pt. attempts. Hippo also ranks third on the team in rebounding, averaging a career-high 5.0 rpg.
Katie Fischer (G, 5'7", Jr.) – the transfer from Mercyhurst is in her first season at Edinboro and continues her impressive season as a Fighting Scot, leading the PSAC and ranking fifth in Division II with 6.5 assists per game. She ranks third in the nation with 149 total assists, the eighth-most in single-season history. Fischer is second on the team and ranks tenth in the PSAC in scoring at 16.1 ppg. Fischer has recorded four double-digit assist games this season and posted five double-doubles.
Michelle Jahn (G, 5'8'', Fr.) - the four-time PSAC West Freshman of the week has proven to be one of the most dangerous 3-pt. threats in the conference. The General McLane product ranks second in the PSAC with a 43.1 3-pt. percentage and fourth with 53 3-pt. field goals. Jahn has scored in double figures in each of the past four contests, averaging 16.0 ppg., and has recorded a 3-pt. field goal in all but three games this season. She is fourth on the team averaging 11.8 ppg.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON HAWKSIndiana (Pa.) continues to be a constant staple at the top of the PSAC West standings, appearing in the PSAC Tournament in each of the past 10 seasons. This year is no different as the Crimson Hawks find themselves one game back of first place in the West, sitting at 12-5 in the conference. However, The Crimson Hawks have dropped three of their last three outings, averaging just 50.6 ppg. during that stretch, including a season-low 44 points against Gannon on January 30.
Indiana (Pa.) has amassed a 10-1 record in the Kovalchick Complex with the lone loss coming against West Chester on November 22. Over the past five seasons, the Crimson Hawks are 57-14 at home.
PSAC West Preseason All-Conference selection Leslie Stapleton leads the Crimson Hawks and ranks sixth in the PSAC averaging 16.3 ppg. The redshirt senior also leads the PSAC and ranks fifth in the nation with a 92.3 free throw percentage.
Like Edinboro, the Crimson Hawks boast a pair of the best 3-pt. shooters in the conference. Marina Wareham ranks fourth in the PSAC with a 40.4 percent (44-of-109) 3-pt. percentage while Stapleton is shooting 39.5 percent (49-of-124) from beyond the arc.
Former Villa Maria standout Zhane Brooks' is the Crimson Hawks leading rebounder, averaging 7.1 rpg. In the first meeting with the Fighting Scots, Brooks recorded a double-double with 20 points and a career-high 16 boards. She also ranks second on the team in scoring at 13.7 ppg.
Sophomore forward Megan Smith ranks second in the PSAC behind only Edinboro's
