EDINBORO, Pa. (March 11, 2016) – Edinboro used a suffocating defensive performance and the inside power of
Kevin Atherley to hand Auburn a 70-24 defeat in the seventh place game at the finish in the 39th annual NWBA National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots, the seventh seed, wrap up the season at 11-23, while ninth seed Auburn is 2-18.
Derek StricklandAtherley scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, making 13-of-21 field goals.
Derek Strickland added eight points, nine rebounds, and six assists for Edinboro (11-23).
Ayuba Alli came off the bench to contribute nine points.
Leading 8-6 less than five minutes into the game, Edinboro ran off 18 straight points, with Atherley scoring the first eight points. The Fighting Scots would hold a 35-15 lead at the half, then outscore the Tigers, 35-9, in the final twenty minutes. Coach
Jim Glatch's team opened up the second half with a 10-0 run, with Atherley and Strickland scoring four points each.
Edinboro shot 50.7 percent for the game (34-of-67) and held a huge 60-24 lead in rebounds. Auburn would shoot just 19.2 percent for the contest (10-of-52), and made just 4 of 30 shots in the second half. Hunter Alvis finished with six points and 13 rebounds, while Blake Loftin also scored six points.
