EDINBORO, Pa. (March 24, 2016) - The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team, fresh off their first-ever win against a nationally-ranked opponent at 18th-ranked Seton Hill, looks for another victory in the nationally-ranked column on Friday when they host number-six Lock Haven at 4:00 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium. The contest is the second of a three-match stretch in which the Boro will face off against nationally-ranked teams. The Fighting Scots enter their second home match of the year at 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Bald Eagles, who finished 2015 as the NCAA Division II runners-up, come to Edinboro with a 7-0 overall mark and a 3-0 PSAC record.
The match will be broadcast by ETV, Edinboro University's student-run television station, with a live streaming link available at www.edinboro.tv. After close defeats to PSAC foes Slippery Rock, 10-7, and Bloomsburg, 11-9, Edinboro hit pay dirt with a 15-13 win on Wednesday at Seton Hill, who were ranked 18th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). It marked the Scots' first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent and their first-ever victory against the Griffins, who had won each of the previous four all-time meetings dating back to 2009. It was also head coach
Caitlin Formato's first career conference victory. Sophomore goalkeeper
Paige Skinner turned in another solid performance Wednesday, tying her career high with 17 saves, which is tied for second all-time by an Edinboro goalie, as she improved to 4-2 on the year.
The Fighting Scots are dealt with a nearly-similar challenge heading into Friday. Since the Boro's inception to women's lacrosse in 2009, they have fallen to Lock Haven in each of their seven all-time meetings. The closest contest came in 2014, when the Bald Eagles took a 15-6 victory. In last year's meeting, a second-ranked Lock Haven squad won by a 19-5 decision.
Defense has become a major component to the Boro's success so far this year, with Skinner topping the PSAC in both save percentage and saves per game at .605 and 9.86, respectively. On the offensive side, senior attacker
Rebecca Martin leads the team and is tied for seventh in the conference with 33 points on 12 goals and 21 assists, while junior attackers
Cydney Hrycko and
Emily Peters are tied for both the team lead and eighth in the PSAC with 22 goals. Senior attacker
Anna Purdy is second on the team and tenth in the conference with 31 points on 16 goals and 15 assists.
Lock Haven, like Edinboro, opened its season at 4-0. They then started their PSAC season with a pair of one-goal victories against Kutztown, 10-9, and Seton Hill, 9-8, followed by an 18-7 win over Shippensburg on Wednesday. LHU finished 2015 with a 20-1 record and made the Division II National Championship, where they fell in overtime, 5-4, to Adelphia. The offseason saw a change of leadership at the Haven, with Lindsay Reese, a former LHU player, taking over head-coaching duties for Kristen Selvage, who coached the program for 14 seasons.
Junior midfielder Rachel Engler is second in the PSAC with 29 goals and first on the team with 29 points. Junior attacker Shannon Bissnette ranks third in the conference with 21 assists and second on the LHU squad with 27 points. Redshirt senior goalie Hannah Houde owns a .440 save percentage and is third in the PSAC with a 7.32 goals against average.
