MATCH STORYLINES
  • The Edinboro wrestling team returns to Eastern Wrestling League competition with road matches at Rider on Friday, January 20, and at George Mason on Sunday, January 22.  The Rider match gets underway at 7 p.m. and is a showdown for first place in the EWL. Edinboro is 4-4 overall, with all four losses against nationally-ranked teams, and 2-0 in the EWL. Rider climbed back into the USA Today/NWCA Division I Top 25, as the Broncs are ranked 25th. Edinboro is receiving votes. Rider is 6-0 overall and also 2-0 in the EWL. George Mason has a 5-7 record and is 2-1 in the EWL prior to Friday's match at Clarion.
  • The Fighting Scots will put their 19-match EWL winning streak on the line with the two road contests.  Edinboro has not lost an EWL dual since a 19-18 defeat to Pittsburgh in their last EWL dual in 2012-13.
  • Edinboro rang in the New Year with an impressive performance while competing against a strong field in the Southern Scuffle, followed by a 43-0 shutout at Bloomsburg and two out of three wins in last weekend's Pitt Duals.  At the Southern Scuffle, the Fighting Scots finished sixth out of 23 teams, with six of the twelve wrestlers entered earning medals.  Sean Russell (125 lbs.), Patricio Lugo (149 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.) brought home fourth place finishes.  Korbin Myers and Billy Miller finished seventh at 133 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively, while Chase Delande was eighth at 157 lbs.
  • Edinboro began the season with duals against three nationally-ranked opponents.  The Fighting Scots opened with a 24-13 loss at sixth-ranked Virginia Tech, then dropped a 20-16 decision to 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh in the home opener. That was followed by a 20-13 loss to 11th-ranked Lehigh. They picked up their first win of the year with the 31-6 triumph over Clarion in their EWL opener.
  • The match with Rider will likely play a large role in who finishes as the EWL regular season champion, with Lock Haven also having a say in the matter. The Broncs are 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the EWL, with wins over Lock Haven (20-14) and Clarion (25-11).  A year ago, Edinboro finished as the regular season champion, but Rider edged the Fighting Scots at the EWL Championships to claim their first EWL title.  Rider finished with 89 points to Edinboro's 79.5. The Broncs had four champions, with Ryan Wolfe at 197 lbs. the lone returnee. The Rider lineup includes, among others, B.J. Clagon and Chad Walsh. Both are former All-Americans who have moved up a weight class this year to 157 and 165 lbs., respectively. Clagon won All-American honors in 2015 thanks to a fifth place finish at 149 lbs. Walsh was fifth at 157 lbs. at Nationals a year ago and was named the EWL Wrestler of the Year. Wolfe, meanwhile, is a two-time EWL champion, winning at 174 lbs. in 2015 and 197 lbs. in 2016.
  • The return of Austin Matthews to the Edinboro lineup sets up a renewal of the rivalry between Matthews and Rider's Chad Walsh. Oddly enough, both moved up a weight class this year to 165 lbs. A year ago, Walsh won the regular season meeting by a 15-11 decision, but Matthews prevailed in the EWL championship match, winning a 17-6 major decision. Walsh is ranked fifth in the latest InterMat rankings, while Matthews is 17th.
  • George Mason comes in with a 5-7 record and is 2-1 in the EWL prior to a match on Friday, January 20 at Clarion. The Patriots have won four straight duals, including a 27-8 win over Cleveland State on January 15.   Edinboro and George Mason have wrestled two common opponents -- Bloomsburg and VMI. Edinboro shut out both, by scores of 43-0 over Bloomsburg and 47-0 over VMI. The Patriots also defeated both, winning 24-18 over the Huskies and 26-18 over the Keydets.
  • The Fighting Scots won their sixth straight PSAC Championship and 11th in the last 12 years in December. Edinboro finished with 156.5 points in the 12-team field, with Lock Haven the next closest competitor with 132 points. Edinboro had seven wrestlers reach the finals, and five came away with titles. Sean Russell and Patricio Lugo won their second individual championships at 125 and 149 lbs., respectively. Meanwhile, three wrestlers were first-time winners -- Korbin Myers (133 lbs.), Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.). Chase Delande (165 lbs.) and Billy Miller (hwt.) came in second, with Fritz Hoehn (165 lbs.) and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) fourth, and Ozzy Lugo (141 lbs.) fifth. Head coach Tim Flynn has now won 17 PSAC championships in his 20 seasons.  In addition, Edinboro has now tied Lock Haven for the most PSAC titles with 19.
  • The Fighting Scots finished tenth out of 35 teams at the Las Vegas Invitational. Four wrestlers placed, with Patricio Lugo finishing second at 149 lbs., Sean Russell third at 125 lbs., Austin Matthews fourth at 165 lbs., and Billy Miller sixth at heavyweight.
  • The Edinboro lineup now has six nationally-ranked wrestlers, according to InterMat, with the addition of Korbin Myers and Dakota Geer in the rankings recently. Sean Russell is currently ninth at 125 lbs,. while Patricio Lugo is ranked tenth at 149 lbs. Billy Miller has moved up to 11th at heavyweight. Austin Matthews is ranked 17th at 165 lbs., while Myers is 18th at 133 lbs. and Geer 19th at 184 lbs.
  • The Fighting Scots return home for the first time in over a month when they host Lock Haven on Friday, January 27 at McComb Fieldhouse.

HEAD COACH

EDINBORO -- Tim Flynn (Penn State '86) is in his 20th season as the helm of the Fighting Scots.  He has elevated the Edinboro program to one of the best in the country, compiling a 210-88-5 record.  Edinboro has had 13 top-20 finishes and five in the top ten at the NCAA Division I National Championships during his tenure.  That includes the two best finishes in school history in 2014 and 2015. The Fighting Scots made the podium for the first time at Nationals with a third place showing two years ago, and in 2014 they were fifth. He has produced three national champions and 37 All-Americans.  All told, Flynn has been named the EWL Coach of the Year seven times and the PSAC Coach of the Year 13 times. Three years ago, Flynn captured nearly every Coach of the Year award, including being named the NWCA NCAA Division I Coach of the Year, WIN's Dan Gable Coach of the Year, and was InterMat's Co-Coach of the Year along with Minnesota's J Robinson.
