The Game Story
  • Edinboro (5-11, 3-9 PSAC West) concludes its three-game road trip on Saturday with a PSAC West contest at Slippery Rock (10-8, 6-6 PSAC West). The game begins at 3:00 p.m. from Morrow Field House. The Fighting Scots and The Rock were ranked fifth and seventh, respectively, in the PSAC West preseason poll.
  • The Fighting Scots defeated Clarion on Wednesday, 82-66, to end a five-game losing streak. The Rock fell victim to a late Pitt-Johnstown rally on Wednesday, 59-58, to drop their second straight game. Slippery Rock has lost four of its last five games.
  • Slippery Rock was won the last eight contests against Edinboro in Morrow Field House and 12 of the last 15 overall meetings dating back to the 2009-10 season. This stretch includes a PSAC Quarterfinals victory in 2015.
  • Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason and senior guard/forward Mikael Anderson combined for 60 points against the Golden Eagles. Mason had 36 points, while Anderson finished with 24 points, scoring 21 of his points in the second half.
  • Mason, who leads the PSAC and ranks 13th nationally at 22.9 ppg., tallied his sixth 30-point game of the season and the tenth of his career. He is second all-time in career 30-point games, trailing only his father, Tyrone Mason, who had 24. Mason also moved into 14th place all-time on the Edinboro career scoring list with 1,300 points. The 6'3" guard needs 45 points to pass Dan Petchel for 13th all-time.
  • Anderson recorded his second straight 20-point game after a career-high, 29-point performance at Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday. It marked his fifth 20-point game this season. The 6'5" native of Las Vegas, Nev. is Edinboro's leading rebounder (6.1 rpg.) and is second on the team in scoring (14.7 ppg.).

  • Slippery Rock held a 71-64 lead with just under four minutes to play before Edinboro rallied for six straight points to come to within one point with 1:41 remaining. The Rock made 4-of-5 free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.
  • The game featured a combined 55 fouls, with the two teams combining for 54 points from the free throw line. Edinboro shot 30-for-39 from the line and Slippery Rock made 24-of-37. SRU made 50.9 percent from the floor (27-for-53), while the Boro shot 38.9 percent (21-for-54).
  • Jaymon Mason scored a game-high 27 points, making 8-of-14 from the field and 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Henri Wade-Chatman had 18 points, while Tommy Scales tallied 10 markers.
  • Cornelius Brown had 26 points with seven rebounds for The Rock, shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 12-of-14 from the charity stripe. Erik Raleigh scored 14 points, while King Abdul had 13 points. Chaquille Pratt grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

1/18/17 – Edinboro 82, Clarion 66 at Clarion University BOX | RECAP
  • Clarion led by as much as 13 points in the first half, but Edinboro closed the gap to 41-39 at intermission. Mikael Anderson opened the second half with a go-ahead 3-pointer, which ignited a 16-0 Edinboro run that put the Fighting Scots ahead for good. Clarion got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
  • Edinboro outscored Clarion in the second half, 43-25. It marked the first time this season the Fighting Scots held an opponent to under 40 points in the second half.
  • Jaymon Mason finished with 36 points, including 20 points in the first half. Mikael Anderson netted 21 second-half points to finish with 24 points.   
  • Edinboro shot 57.1 percent in the second half (16-for-28), while Clarion shot 32.1 percent (9-for-28).
 
1/18/17 – Pitt-Johnstown 59, Slippery Rock 58 at SRU BOX | RECAP
  • Slippery Rock led, 56-50, with 3:51 to play, but did not make a field goal the rest of the way as Pitt-Johnstown ended the game on a 9-2 run for the win.
  • Leading, 58-57, The Rock went to the free throw line twice in the final 25 seconds, but could not convert on the first of either one-and-one chances. Dale Clancy scored the winning points for UPJ on a pair of free throws with 4.5 seconds to play.
  • Merdic Green led all scorers with 21 points. Vinny Lasley tallied 12 points with ten rebounds, while George Chase had nine points with eight boards.
 
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary, Edinboro '99 (44-51, 4th Year)
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's teams have improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • He made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
 
Slippery Rock: Kevin Reynolds, Bloomsburg '91 (163-93, 9th Year)
  • In just his ninth season, Kevin Reynolds ranks second all-time at Slippery Rock in career wins. He has led The Rock to five 20-win seasons and three NCAA Tournament appearances, as well as a PSAC Finals appearance in 2013.
  • After playing at Bloomsburg, the 2009 PSAC West Coach of the Year got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at Indiana (Pa.) and was an assistant coach at Edinboro under Greg Walcavich.
  • Reynolds came to Slippery Rock after a one-season stint as assistant coach at Morehead State. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Drake and Denver, serving as the interim head coach at the latter during the 2006-07 season.

Jaymon Mason (G, R-Jr.)
  • Scored 36 points at Clarion on Wednesday to move into 14th place all-time on the all-time career scoring list at Edinboro with 1,300 points. He is 44 points from passing Dan Petchel for 13th place.
  • Has tallied six 30-point games this season and ten for his career.
  • Leads the PSAC and ranks 13th in NCAA Division II in scoring at 22.9 ppg. Fourth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 43.4 percent (49-for-113).
  • Posted his first career back-to-back 30-point performances with 30 points against West Chester on December 4 and 37 markers against Notre Dame (Ohio) on December 7.
  • Became the 28th Fighting Scot to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone at Millersville on November 19.
  • Was the fourth-fastest to reach the 1,000-point mark, doing so in 55 games. Only Adam Cheek (49 games) Tyrone Mason (51 games), Jaymon's father, and Kenny Tate (51 games) have reached the mark faster.
  • Was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American preseason team after earning All-American honorable mention accolades last season. The 2015 PSAC West Freshman of the Year was selected to the PSAC West preseason team after being named to the NABC first team and All-PSAC West first team in 2015-16.
Mikael Anderson (F, Sr.)
  • Tallied 24 points with nine rebounds at Clarion on Wednesday after scoring a career-high 29 points at Indiana (Pa.) last Saturday. Has five 20-point games this season.
  • Leads the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg.) and second on the team in scoring (14.7 ppg.) in his first year as a starter.
  • Recorded his first career double-double against West Chester on December 4 with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

  • Scored a career-high 31 points off the bench against Daemen on November 23 and netted 30 points in his first start against Cheyney on December 10.
 
News and Notes
  • Edinboro held Clarion to 25 second-half points on Wednesday, marking the first time this season the Fighting Scots held an opponent to under 40 points in the closing session.
  • Edinboro has had to overcome numerous injuries that have left coach Pat Cleary's team suiting up just eight players in recent games. Jack Frank started the first 11 games at center, but has missed the last five games with an injury. Malachy Onwudiegwu has not played since early December due to an injury, missing the last eight games. Finally, after working his way into guard rotation recently, Mike Sims went down with an injury in the second half of the Gannon game and has missed the last two contests.
  • Redshirt junior forward Jon Girvin, who joined the team in early December, has started the last five games while filling in for an injured Jack Frank. Girvin, who started all 11 games at defensive end for the football team, had six points with five rebounds at Clarion on Wednesday. He had a career-high 11 boards off the bench in his second career game against Cheyney on December 10.
  • Junior guard/forward Mike Beck grabbed eight boards at Clarion after registering a season-high nine rebounds at IUP last Saturday. He is averaging 10.2 ppg. and 5.8 rpg. over the last five contests.
  • Junior center Andre Frederick tallied six points against the Golden Eagles in 18 minutes off the bench. He tied his career high with 12 points at IUP last Saturday. He has netted 12 points on two other occasions this year, including a double-double performance at Shippensburg on November 20, where he grabbed ten boards. The transfer from Robert Morris has tallied 14 blocks over the last four games, including back-to-back six-block performances against Bloomsburg and Gannon.
Scouting Slippery Rock
  • After winning six straight games for a 9-4 start, Slippery Rock has dropped its last two games and four of its last five. They fell at East Stroudsburg last Saturday, 62-53, and to Pitt-Johnstown, 59-58, on Wednesday. Their lone win in that stretch was against Clarion.
  • The Rock held a 56-50 lead on UPJ with 3:51 to play, but the Mountain Cats closed the game on a 9-2 run to pull out the victory. SRU did not make a field goal in that final stretch and missed on a pair of one-and-one chances in the final 25 seconds that could have otherwise secured a win.
  • Slippery Rock, picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West preseason poll, returns only two players from last year's roster in guards Jordan Marrow and Naquil Jones. Of the nine new players, eight are transfers, with five of them from Marshalltown Community College.
  • The Rock showcase a strong defensive unit. They lead the PSAC and rank sixth in NCAA Division II in scoring defense at 68.6 ppg. In addition, they lead the conference and rank ninth nationally in rebounding with a 10.5 rebounding margin.
  • Senior forward Christal Malalu, a transfer from Marshalltown Community College, ranks tenth in the PSAC in rebounding at 6.8 rpg., while averaging 7.6 ppg.
  • Senior guard Naquil Jones leads the team in scoring at 14.4 ppg.
  • Junior forward Merdic Green and senior guard Khyree Wooten are the only two players to start all 18 games for The Rock this year, averaging 10.7 ppg. and 10.3 ppg., respectively. Green is a transfer from Marshalltown Community College, while Wooten came to SRU from Colby Community College.
  • Senior guard Jordan Marrow is the brother of former Edinboro basketball player Will Marrow. Will Marrow played for the Fighting Scots from 2012-15 and served as a student assistant coach during the 2015-16 season.
