The Game Story
  • Edinboro (4-7, 2-5 PSAC West) returns home Friday night for a PSAC West matchup against Pitt-Johnstown (8-5, 3-4 PSAC West) at 7:30 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse. Both teams are coming off a loss, with the Fighting Scots looking to bounce back after a 104-74 defeat at Seton Hill on Tuesday that snapped a two-game winning streak. The Mountain Cats fell at 16th-ranked Indiana (Pa.), 77-72, on Tuesday.
  • Edinboro was ranked fifth in the PSAC West preseason poll. UPJ was ranked third and earned one first-place vote.
  • Friday's contest features two of the PSAC's top ten scorers. Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason tops the league and ranks 11th in NCAA Division II with 23.2 ppg., while UPJ senior forward AJ Leahey ranks sixth in the PSAC at 21.2 ppg. Leahey also ranks sixth in the conference in rebounding at 7.4 rpg.
  • Mason tallied a team-high 27 points at Seton Hill on Tuesday for his seventh 20-point game of the season and fifth in the last six contests. He moved into 19th place all-time at Edinboro in career scoring with 1,189 career points.
  • The Fighting Scots eye a second straight win against the Mountain Cats. Edinboro rallied from a ten-point second half deficit to defeat UPJ in their last meeting, 78-76 in overtime, last February. Edinboro has won three of the last four meetings and holds a 20-7 lead in the all-time series.
  • Redshirt senior guard Sheldon Brogdon had 14 points at Seton Hill in his third consecutive start. He is averaging 20.7 ppg. in those three games.
  • Senior forward Mikael Anderson, in his first year as a starter, is averaging 15.8 ppg. and 6.7 rpg. in the last six games. This includes two games where he netted a career-high 20 points.

  • Except for an early 2-0 lead 12 seconds into the contest, Edinboro never led in regulation. They trailed UPJ by as much as 15 points, and overcame a ten-point second half deficit. Jaymon Mason forced the game into overtime tied at 65-65 with a turn-around jumper with three seconds left in regulation.
  • All of the Fighting Scots' overtime points came on free throws. Edinboro finished 23-for-27 from the charity stripe, including 11-for-12 in overtime, while Pitt-Johnstown went 5-for-6.
  • Mason registered a double-double with 34 point and 12 rebounds, shooting 13-for-19 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Henri Wade-Chatman had 12 points.
  • Nate Snodgrass finished with 21 points and six assists to lead UPJ. AJ Leahey had a double-double with ten points and 16 rebounds, while Isaac Vescovi scored 16 points and Dale Clancy 13.

  • Edinboro kept pace with Seton Hill in the first half, with Jaymon Mason scoring 20 of his team-high 27 points in the opening session. After Seton Hill used a 13-2 run to lead, 19-7 with 14:05 left in the half, the Fighting Scots rallied to cut the Griffins' lead to as little as three points at 32-29 with 6:24 remaining.
  • Seton Hill led, 47-39, at the half. They broke the game open in the second half, shooting 65.5 percent from the floor (19-for-29), including 7-for-10 from 3-point range, and extending their lead to as much as 36 points.
  • Seton Hill finished with a 61.7 field goal percentage (37-for-60) and a 14-for-20 showing from 3-point range. Edinboro shot 42.0 percent (29-for-69) from the floor and 8-for-22 from behind the arc.
  • The Griffins' Nathan Davis tallied a double-double with a career-high 37 points with 12 rebounds. He shot 12-for-21 from the field and 9-for-11 from 3-point range. Noah Davis, Nathan's older brother, was second on the team with 18 points.
  • Mason also registered six assists and five rebounds. Sheldon Brogdon had 14 points with four boards, while Andre Frederick had 10 points with five rebounds in just 11 minutes. Mikael Anderson had a team-high seven rebounds and tallied eight markers.
 
1/3/17 – #16 Indiana (Pa.) 77, Pitt-Johnstown 72 at IUP BOX | RECAP
  • Indiana (Pa.) jumped out to several double-digit leads on Pitt-Johnstown, leading by as much as 13 points. The Mountain Cats kept pace and, trailing 61-52, used an 11-2 run to tie the game at 63 with 5:29 remaining.
  • Dale Clancy put UPJ ahead with a layup to make it 69-67 with 2:45 left to play, but a go-ahead three by Dante Lombardi gave IUP the lead for good at 71-69 with 1:37 to go in the game.
  • UPJ forced IUP into 14 turnovers, which led to a 21-8 advantage in points off turnovers. Pitt-Johnstown committed nine turnovers.
  • AJ Leahey posted a game-high 21 points with six rebounds. Isaac Vescovi had 15 points, while Dale Clancy had 15 points with a game-high seven boards.

Edinboro: Pat Cleary, Edinboro '99 (43-47, 4th Year)
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's teams have improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • He made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
 
Pitt-Johnstown: Bob Rukavina (442-313, 28th year)
  • Prior to Bob Rukavina's arrival in 1989, Pitt-Johnstown had only four winning seasons since its inception in 1969. He has led the Mountain Cats to four NCAA Tournament appearances and seven 20-win seasons.
  • He was named the 2015-16 PSAC West Coach of the Year after UPJ finished with an 18-11 record and posted a first-round PSAC Tournament win over Seton Hill.
  • Entered the season ranked 25th all-time in NCAA Division II in career wins.

Jaymon Mason (G, R-Jr.)
  • Scored 27 points at Seton Hill Tuesday for his seventh game of the season with at least 20 points. Moved into 19th place all-time at Edinboro with 1,189 career points. Has scored more than 20 points in five of last six games.
  • Leads the PSAC and ranks 11th in NCAA Division II with 23.2 ppg. Fourth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (46.7 pct.), making 35-for-75.
  • Posted his first career back-to-back 30-point performance with 30 points against West Chester on December 4 and 37 markers against Notre Dame (Ohio) on December 7. Has scored 30-or-more points four times this season and eight times in his career.
  • Became the 28th Fighting Scot to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone at Millersville on November 19.
  • Was the third-fastest to reach the 1,000-point mark, doing so in 55 games. Only Tyrone Mason, Jaymon's father, and Kenny Tate have reached the mark faster, with both netting 1,000 points in 51 games.
  • Was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American preseason team after earning All-American honorable mention accolades last season. The 2015 PSAC West Freshman of the Year was selected to the PSAC West preseason team after being named to the NABC All-Atlantic Region first team and All-PSAC West first team in 2015-16.

  • Matched his career high with 20 points against California (Pa.) on December 30. Previously scored 20 points against Notre Dame (Ohio) on December 7. Is averaging 13.1 points and 5.5 rebounds over the last six games. Second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg.) and rebounding (5.6 rpg.). Is in his first year as a starter.
  • Recorded his first career double-double against West Chester on December 4 with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Sheldon Brogdon (G, R-Sr.)

  • Scored a career-high 31 points in 27 minutes off the bench versus Daemen on November 23, and had 30 points against Cheyney in his first start on December 10.

Scouting Pitt-Johnstown
  • Pitt-Johnstown won three straight games, including PSAC wins over Lock Haven and Clarion, before falling at 16th-ranked Indiana (Pa.), 77-72, on Tuesday. Their one other conference win was over Bloomsburg. UPJ was picked to finish third in the Western Division in the PSAC Coaches Preseason Poll.
  • The Mountain Cats look to build upon their 2015-16 season, where they finished 18-11 and won a first-round PSAC Tournament game over Seton Hill, 81-72. They fell to top-seeded Indiana (Pa.), 77-66, in the quarterfinals.
  • Senior forward AJ Leahey ranks sixth in the PSAC in scoring at 21.2 ppg. and rebounding at 7.4 rpg. Leahey is also fifth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage at .465 percent (33-for-71). He was named to the All-PSAC West preseason team after being named to the PSAC West first team for the second straight year in 2015-16.
  • Junior guard Dale Clancy was also selected to the All-PSAC West preseason team after averaging 13.3 ppg. and 4.0 rpg in 2015-16. He is fourth on the team with 10.3 ppg.
  • Leahey currently stands in 13th-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,283 points.  He also stands in fourth-place on the all-time 3-point field goals list with 200.
  • Junior forward Isaac Vescovi is second on the team with 13.0 ppg., while senior guard Jake Laravie is third with 11.0 ppg.
