The Game Story
  • Edinboro (4-8, 2-6 PSAC West) travels to Bloomsburg (6-6, 2-6 PSAC East) on Monday for its final PSAC crossover contest of the season. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Nelson Field House. The Fighting Scots and Huskies were each ranked fifth in the PSAC West and PSAC East preseason polls, respectively.
  • The Fighting Scots, after two straight PSAC wins, look to reverse a two-game losing streak after losing to Pitt-Johnstown, 86-77, on Friday. Edinboro has won the last three meetings against Bloomsburg and 11 of the last 13. They hold a 15-10 advantage in the all-time series.
  • The Huskies were on a three-game winning streak before coming up short against 14th-ranked Shippensburg, 79-75, on Friday. Bloomsburg is 0-5 in PSAC crossover contests, including losses to the top four teams in the PSAC West preseason poll.
  • Monday's contest features two of the PSAC's top four scorers. Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason tops the league and ranks 13th in NCAA Division II with 22.7 ppg., while Bloomsburg redshirt junior forward Christian Mortellite ranks fourth and 16th, respectively, with 21.7 ppg. They were also All-PSAC preseason selections.
  • Mason tallied 17 points with seven assists against Pitt-Johnstown on Friday to move into 18th place in career scoring with 1,206 points. He has scored at least 20 points in five of the last seven contests.
  • Senior forward Mikael Anderson scored a career-high 25 points against Pitt-Johnstown for his third 20-point game of the season. In his first year as a starter, he leads the team with 5.9 rpg. and is second in scoring at 13.7 ppg. He is averaging 17.1 ppg. and 7.0 rpg. in the last seven games.
  • Redshirt senior guard Sheldon Brogdon has started the last four games and is averaging 16.0 ppg. in that time. He is third in the team in scoring at 11.1 ppg. and has posted a pair of 30-point games.

  • Edinboro led for most of the first half, holding a 42-32 advantage at intermission. They held a 46-32 lead early in the second half before Bloomsburg used a 20-3 run to pull out in front, 52-49, with 12:38 to play.
  • Trailing, 62-61, Sheldon Brogdon drilled a 3-pointer to give Edinboro the lead for good at 64-62 with 5:07 remaining.
  • Five Fighting Scots scored in double figures. Tommy Scales and Jaymon Mason tied for game-high honors with 16 points, with Mason also grabbing 12 rebounds for a double-double. Art Cook had 13 markers, while Brogdon finished with 12 points and Henri Wade-Chatman with 10 points. Mike Beck had nine points with ten boards.
  • Christian Mortellite led the Huskies with 14 points, while Malik Gardner had 13 points. Malik Sneed registered eight points with a game-high 14 rebounds.
  • Edinboro led, 52-41, in rebounds and 12-2 in fast break points.

  • Edinboro would trail by as much as 24 points in the game but staged a stirring rally to pull to within six points late in the game. The Mountain Cats held a 76-60 lead with 4:39 to play before Edinboro used a 12-2 run to bring UPJ's lead to 78-72 with 1:03 remaining.
  • A pair of missed layups by the Fighting Scots led to four points the other way on free throws for an 82-72 UPJ lead with 35 ticks remaining.
  • Mikael Anderson netted a career-high 25 points to lead the contest, while grabbing nine rebounds. He connected on 3-of-4 3-pointers. Jaymon Mason had 17 points with seven assists, while Mike Beck had 15 points.
  • Edinboro outrebounded Pitt-Johnstown, 39-32, and outscored the Mountain Cats, 15-2, in second chance points.
  • The Fighting Scots received a huge boost off the bench from Michael Sims Jr. After not playing in the first half, Sims came off the bench to spark the Fighting Scots' second–half rally. The sophomore guard totaled seven points, four rebounds, and three assists in 16 minutes. He had scored just 12 points in the previous 11 games. Maceo Baston turned in another strong effort off the bench with five points and eight rebounds.
  • With Jack Frank out with an injury, Jon Girvin made his first career start. Better known for his prowess as a starting defensive end on the football team, the redshirt junior did not join the team until mid-December.
 
1/6/17 – No. 14 Shippensburg 79, Bloomsburg 75 at Shippensburg University BOX | RECAP
  • Undefeated Shippensburg jumped out in front, 31-16, with 4:20 to play in the first half before Bloomsburg went on a 13-0 run to close out the opening session and pull within two points at 31-29.
  • Christian Mortellite opened the second half with a 3-pointer to give Bloomsburg a 32-31 lead, but Shippensburg responded with a layup to take the lead back for good. The Raiders would build the lead back up to as many as ten points, but the Huskies rallied again and pulled to within one point on four occasions, but were never able to get take the lead.
  • Carnell McGirt scored a game-high 26 points off the bench, shooting 9-for-13 from the field. Yahmir Greenlee registered 19 points, while Mortellite had 13 points with eight rebounds.
 
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary, Edinboro '99 (43-49, 4th Year)
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's teams have improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • He made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
 
Bloomsburg: John Sanow, Indiana (Pa.) '87 (124-157, 11th year)
  • John Sanow is in his 11th season as Bloomsburg's head coach, and is now the school's second-winningest coach with 124 wins.
  • Sanow has led the Huskies to four PSAC Tournament appearances in the last five years and compiled a 70-66 record in that time.
  • A 1987 graduate of Indiana (Pa.), he led IUP in scoring and was a first team All-PSAC selection in 1986. Sanow served as an assistant coach at Gannon, Pitt-Johnstown, Vermont and St. Francis(Pa.).

Jaymon Mason (G, R-Jr.)
  • Scored 17 points against Pitt-Johnstown Friday to move into 18th place all-time at Edinboro in career scoring with 1,206 points. Has scored more than 20 points in five of the last seven games.
  • Leads the PSAC and ranks 13th in NCAA Division II with 22.7 ppg. Third in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 46.3 pct. (37-for-80).
  • Posted his first career back-to-back 30-point performance with 30 points against West Chester on December 4 and 37 markers against Notre Dame (Ohio) on December 7.
  • Became the 28th Fighting Scot to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone at Millersville on November 19.
  • Was the fourth-fastest to reach the 1,000-point mark, doing so in 55 games. Only Adam Cheek (49 games) Tyrone Mason (51 games), Jaymon's father, and Kenny Tate (51 games) have reached the mark faster.
  • Was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American preseason team after earning All-American honorable mention accolades last season. The 2015 PSAC West Freshman of the Year was selected to the PSAC West preseason team after being named to the NABC first team and All-PSAC West first team in 2015-16.

  • Scored a career-high 25 points with nine rebounds against Pitt-Johnstown on Friday after a pair of 20-point performances against California (Pa.) on December 30 and Notre Dame (Ohio) on December 7.

  • Bloomsburg won three straight contests before falling to 14th-ranked Shippensburg, 75-71, on Friday. The Huskies were picked to finish fifth in the PSAC East preseason poll.
  • The Huskies are 0-5 against PSAC West opponents. They dropped crossover contests to Pitt-Johnstown, Indiana (Pa.), Mercyhurst, Gannon and Clarion, with all but Clarion being top-four selections in the PSAC West preseason poll.
  • Redshirt junior forward Christian Mortellite was selected to the All-PSAC preseason team after earning first-team All-PSAC East honors in 2015-16. The 6'5" forward ranks fourth in the PSAC and 16th in NCAA Division II in scoring at 21.7 ppg. He is third in the conference in free throw percentage at 87.5 percent (56-for-65) and sixth in 3-point field goal percentage at 44.2 percent (46-for-104).
  • Junior guard Carnell McGirt leads the team and ranks tenth in the PSAC in rebounding at 6.7 rpg.
  • Senior guard Yahmir Greelee, who sat out the early part of the season, returned to the lineup on December 30 against West Chester. He has started the last three games, averaging 15.3 ppg.
