Box Score (New/Sortable Format) 3 WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Edinboro wheelchair basketball team played in three close contests on Friday, but lost in each game on the first day of the Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament.
The Fighting Scots started the day off against Southwest Minnesota State in a 56-51 defeat. They would then face the host Warhawks in a 70-55 decision, and ended the night in a close 51-47 loss to Illinois.
Edinboro resumes tournament play on Saturday against Nebraska-Omaha and Missouri.
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 56, EDINBORO 51
Edinboro connected on 42.1 (24-of-57) percent of their shots, and held Southwest Minnesota State to 33.3 percent (19-of-57) on the day. But the Mustangs held a 29-4 advantage over the Fighting Scots on free throws attempted. The Fighting Scots held a lead of at least six points on four occasions in the first half. Southwest Minnesota State would hold the Boro to two points in the final 4:18, as they cut a 23-17 Edinboro lead to 25-23 at the half. In the second frame, both teams held their own on the defensive end. The Fighting Scots would fall behind in the first minute at 27-25, and would force two ties, before taking a 31-29 lead just under 15 minutes. They hold onto their lead until the final minute of the game. The Mustangs would hold Edinboro scoreless over the final 4:06, and connected on 7-of-11 free throws in that span.
Chayse Wolf scored a team-high 18 points, brought down 13 rebounds, and dished out a game-high seven assists.
Kevin Atherley scored 10 points and recorded 13 boards, while
Alex Saleh also scored in double-digits with 10 points.
WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER 70, EDINBORO 55
The host team was hot in the second half, shooting 63.3 percent (19-of-30) and 54.2 percent (32-of-59) in the game, while holding Edinboro to 43.3 percent in the contest (26-of-60). The Mustangs also held a 48-20 advantage in points in the paint. In the opening 12 minutes, there were six ties and four lead changes. Edinboro would close to within two points on a 10-5 run over the final five minutes of the half for a 31-29 halftime deficit. Both teams exchanged shots over the first ten minutes in the final frame. But Edinboro would held to four points over a seven-minute stretch. On the other side, the Mustangs scored 17 points, took the lead and would be up by 15 points. Atherley led the Boro with his second double-double of the day. The junior put up 15 points, brought down 10 rebounds, assisted on four shots and blocked one shot for the Fighting Scots. Wolf contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Ayuba Alli scored 10 points and dished out a team-high six assists.
ILLINOIS 51, EDINBORO 47
In Edinboro's final contest on Friday, they shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the floor, but Illinois converted on 50.0 percent of their attempts (22-of-44) in the loss. The Fighting Scots would lead the Fighting Illini 29-27 at the half, after a
Seamus McNally tip-in with two seconds left in the opening frame. Just over a minute into the second half, Illinois quickly tied the game, but an Atherley tip-in put the Fighting Scots back on top, 31-29. Following two ties over the next four minutes, the Fighting Illini captured a five point lead. The Boro would fight back, as Wolf tied the game at 47 all with 1:26 remaining. Illinois would break the deadlock on a jumper just 13 seconds later, and converted 2-of-3 free throws to seal the game. Wolf led the pack with a near triple-double, as he scored 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, tallied nine assists, and grabbed seven rebounds. Atherley was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures with 12 points. He also collected nine boards.
