The Game Story
  • Edinboro opens PSAC play following wins over teams with 20 wins a season ago. They defeated Wheeling Jesuit (25-7 in 2016-17) on Wednesday, 77-67, as Jontay Walton scored a career-high 26 points. Last weekend, the Fighting Scots started the 2017-18 season off by shocking the 2017 national runner-up, Virginia Union (27-5), by an 89-79 count. Edinboro never trailed against the Panthers, who entered the season ranked number two in the WBCA Division II Preseason Top 25.On Sunday, the Fighting Scots fell behind early to UVa-Wise (21-11) before rallying for a 68-56 win.
  • PSAC play begins with a familiar foe in Millersville. Both teams have seen one another up close this season, as the Fighting Scots faced the Panthers and Cavaliers in Millersville a weekend ago. The Marauders, who were picked to finish sixth in the PSAC East, split the twinbill against the two Virginia teams. They defeated UVa-Wise, 56-47, but fell to Virginia Union, 87-43.
  • Saturday's contest will mark the 21st meeting between the two programs. Edinboro leads 11-9 all-time, are winners of seven straight and won 63-49 last year.
  • M'Ville guard Alayah Hall led all players in the contest with 15 points. Nicole Johnson and Katie Fischer each scored 13 points for Edinboro. Johnson also had a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • On Sunday, the Raiders visit McComb Fieldhouse in search of their first win of the season. A week ago, they hosted the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic that featured PSAC foe Kutztown, Bowie State, and Wheeling Jesuit. They lost to the Cardinals on Friday, 72-63, and Bowie State on Saturday, 73-64.
  • The Fighting Scots defeated the top team in the PSAC East last season in a 64-57 decision.
  • Edinboro had a 24-3 advantage in bench points. Cheniya Sharpe led the bench with nine points, nine rebounds and two steals. Maggie Moore scored 7 points and grabbed 13 boards, while Jontay Walton scored eight points, collected five rebounds, and had a game-high three steals.
  • The Boro also led 26-9 in fast break points, and a 20-9 edge in offensive rebounds, with Moore leading the pack with six.
  • Reigning PSAC East Player of the Year Stephanie Knauer led all players with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and grabbed eight rebounds. Logan Snyder, named to the PSAC East First Team added 15 points.
  • This season, The Raiders are without their three conference first teamers from a year ago in Knauer, Snyder, and Colleen Young. As a result, Shippensburg dropped from the top spot in last season's preseason poll to fifth place this year.

  • Edinboro contests can be heard on WFSE-FM 88.9, with Gabe Hypes on the play-by-play and Mike Lantinen providing color commentary. In addition, this year Edinboro will be part of the PSAC Network. All men's and women's basketball games will be streamed live through Stretch Internet.

  • The Marauders never struggled to come within five points in the contest, and trailed by as much as 24 points.
  • Nicole Johnson led the way with a double-double, collecting 13 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Fischer also scored 10 points for Edinboro, while dishing out a game-high seven assists.
  • Edinboro outscored Millersville in the paint, 34-20, and scored 18 points off 22 turnovers.
  • Alayah Hall led all Millersville players with 15 points.
  • Aunjel Van Brakle also scored in double figures with 10 points. She added seven rebounds and blocked two shots.

  • Edinboro scrapped 26 second chance points off 20 turnovers, as they defeated the PSAC East favorites in Shippensburg for their third straight victory last year.
  • The Fighting Scots bench was also key in the win, as they outscored the Raider bench 24-3.
  • Cheniya Sharpe had a bench-high nine points, to go along with nine rebounds and two steals. Maggie Moore scored 7 points and grabbed 13 boards, while Jontay Walton scored eight points, collected five rebounds, and had a game-high three steals.

Edinboro: Stan Swank (Purdue '76) -- 557-301, 31st Year
  • Stan Swank is in his 31st season as the Edinboro women's basketball head coach. He has led the Fighting Scots to seven straight 20-win seasons for a 166-46 overall record during that period. Overall, Swank has had 13 20-win seasons as Edinboro's head coach.
  • Swank is the all-time leader in wins among PSAC women's coaches, and is three wins shy of passing Charles Chronister of Bloomsburg for the all-time conference record among men's and women's coaches.
  • He has led Edinboro to four PSAC championship titles, and ten appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament. During March Madness, the Fighting Scots have made two Elite Eight appearances, three Sweet Sixteen births, and have made the Round of 32 on four occasions.

Millersville: Mary Fleig (Lock Haven '79) -- 486-271, 28th year; 608-331, 35th year
  • Mary Fleig enters her 28th season at Millersville, and is 14 wins away from her 500th career victory with the Marauders.
  • Both Fleig and Stank Swank have combined for 1,043 wins.
  • Since her first season at Millersville in 1990-91, she has compiled 11 seasons of 20 wins, and has never had a single digit win season at Millersville. The six-time PSAC East Coach of the Year has also appeared in 23 PSAC playoffs, three PSAC Championships, with one win, and nine NCAA playoff appearances.
 
Shippensburg: Kristy Trn (Shippensburg '93) -- 322-194, 19th year
  • Trn was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year a season ago, receiving the honor for the fourth time in her career.
  • Trn has spent her entire collegiate career with Shippensburg. She was a member of the women's basketball team, was a volunteer assistance coach for a year, and an assistant coach for five seasons.
  • She has coached the Raiders to 12 PSAC playoffs, and has reached NCAA Division II Tournament on three occasions, with one Final Four appearance and a semifinal.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Stan Swank is the all-time leader in wins (557) among PSAC women's coaches, and is three wins shy of passing Charles Chronister of Bloomsburg for the all-time conference record among men's and women's coaches.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish third in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. A year ago they finished fourth in the PSAC West and qualified for the PSAC Tournament for the eighth straight year.
  • Edinboro opens PSAC having defeated national runner-up and second ranked Virginia Union (27-5 in 2016-17), 89-79, UVa-Wise (21-11), 68-56, and Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday (25-7), 77-67. 
  • In the win over the Cardinals, Jontay Walton scored a career-high 26 points. The 5'5" redshirt junior guard went 10-of-22 from the floor, connected on 5-of-11 3-pointers, tied a career-high with six steals, and dished out seven assists without committing a turnover.
  • Following a 34-30 halftime deficit, the Edinboro embarked on a 13-3 run over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. In the process, the Boro would take their first lead at 36-34 and never look back.
  • Ciara Rosten ended the night with 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five blocks. Michaela Barnes scored 14 points. Whitney Allen and Cheniya Sharpe each grabbed 10 rebounds.
Scouting the Marauders
  • Mary Fleig enters her 28th season at Millersville, and is 14 wins away from her 500th career victory with the Marauders. Both Fleig and Edinboro head coach Stank Swank have combined for 1,043 wins.
  • The Marauders were picked to finish sixth in the PSAC East Coaches' Preseason Poll. Last season they finished in sixth place in the regular season (10-19 overall, 7-15 PSAC East).
  • M'Ville's 1-1 record comes against two opponents that have already played Edinboro this season. At the Conference Crossover, the Marauders split a twin bill, defeating UVa-Wise, 56-47, but lost to second-ranked Virginia Union, 87-43.
  • Against UVa-Wise, the Marauders took a late lead in the fourth quarter, capturing their first win of the campaign.
  • Senior guard Alayah Hall scored 18 points on the night. She also connected on 9-of-10 free throws, including eight free throws in the final 1:56.
  • Redshirt junior forward Kendra Bamberger led the team in rebounding, as she collected 10 boards, including five on the offensive end.
  • Freshman Lauren Lister was clutch in her first collegiate contest. The 5'8" guard scored eight of her 12 points in the second half.
  • Against Virginia Union, the Marauders struggled to find a rhythm in a 87-43 loss. They would trail the Panthers 26-3 at the end of the first quarter, and shot 24.5 percent on the day.
  • Alayah Hall scored eight of her nine made free throws in the final 1:56. The Marauders trailed for nearly two and a half quarters, taking their first lead at 4:22 in the third.
  • Redshirt junior forward Kendra Bamberger led the team on the glass with 10 rebounds, with five coming on the offensive end. She also scored nine points.
  • Freshman Lauren Lister was clutch in her first collegiate contest. The 5'8" guard scored eight of her 12 points in the second half.

Scouting the Raiders
  • Kristy Turn enters her 19th season as the head coach of her alma mater. The reigning PSAC East Coach of the Year guided the Raiders to a top seed in the PSAC East with a 24-7 overall record and a 18-4 record in conference play.
  • This season, Shippensburg was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC East Coaches' Preseason Poll, as they are without their top three seniors from a year ago- Morgan Griffith, Colleen Powell and PSAC East Athlete of the Year Stephanie Knauer.
  • Shippensburg hosted the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic last weekend, playing host to Kutztown, Bowie State, and Edinboro's opponent from Wednesday night, Wheeling Jesuit. The Raiders fell to 0-2 over the two contests, losing by nine points in each game.
  • Against the Cardinals last Saturday, the youthful Raiders showed upside in a 72-63 defeat. Nine of the 13 girls on the roster are their freshmen seasons.
  • Ariel Jones, who shared PSAC East Freshman of the Week with teammate Kryshell Gordy, scored 24 points, including three 3-pointers and went 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
  • Gordy, a 5'10" forward, contributed a double-double in her first collegiate contest. She scored 12 points on 6-of-8 from the floor, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked three shots.
  • Last Sunday, the Raiders fell to 0-2 against Bowie State, 73-64.
  • The Raiders outscored the Bulldogs, 43-28 in the first and fourth quarters, respectively, but Bowie State held Shippensburg to 14 points in the third quarter, while scoring 31 points.
  • Jones led all players with 27 points and seven rebounds.
