The Game Story
  • Edinboro opens the 2017-18 season against Thiel for the second straight season. A year ago, the Fighting Scots claimed a 9-74 victory to start the season. As was the case a year ago, while the game counts for the Fighting Scots, it is considered an exhibition game for the Division III Tomcats and does not count on their record.   .
  • Edinboro looks to rebound from an 8-18 finish in 2016-17, as numerous injuries greatly impacted the squad. The Fighting Scots were recently picked to finish eighth in the PSAC Western Division in the coaches' preseason poll after finishing eighth a year ago. 
  • Head coach Pat Cleary begins his fifth season in charge of the Fighting Scots. He owns a 47-58 career record. His first three squads all showed improvement in their final record prior to last year's injury-ravaged season. The 2015-16 Fighting Scot edition went 15-11 and came in third in the PSAC West.
  • Thiel ended the 2016-17 season with a 16-9 record and went 11-7 in the Presidents Athletic Conference. That was good for third in the conference. The Tomcats defeated Grove City, 69-58, in the PAC Tournament quarterfinals before suffering a 73-53 loss at top-seeded Thomas More in the semifinals.Head coach Tim Loomis is in his 12th year at the helm of the Tomcats.
  • Redshirt senior guard Jaymon Mason enters the season ranked fifth in career scoring with 1,532 career points. Kenny Tate is in fourth place with 1,552 career points, and  Tim Smiley is third with 1,533 points. Mason was recently named a Division II Bulletin preseason honorable mention All-American. he is a two-time Division II Bulletin honorable mention All-American and earned first team All-PSAC West accolades as a junior and senior.

  • The Edinboro-Thiel game can be heard on WFSE-FM 88.9, with Gabe Hypes on the play-by-play and Mike Lantinen providing color commentary. In addition, this year Edinboro will be part of the PSAC Network. All men's and women's basketball games will be streamed live through Stretch Internet.

  • Edinboro opened the 2016-17 season with its 17th straight win over the Tomcats. The contest counted as an exhibition for Division III Thiel.   
  • The Fighting Scots led 42-33 at the half thanks to 15 points from Jaymon Mason. They would build on that lead in the second half, as the advantage grew to as much as 23 points at 84-61 with just under eight minutes to play on a jumper by Michael Sims Jr. The contest was no closer than 14 points the rest of the way. 
  • Mason finished with 24 points to lead four players in double figures. He added seven assists. Malachy Onwudiegwu had 17 points, with Maceo Baston II contributing 12 points and Mikael Anderson 11. Jack Frank and Andre Frederick led the Scots with seven rebounds apiece.  
  • Thiel also had four players in double digits, led by Alonzo Brown's 17 points.Clandell Cetoute had 16 points and 10 rebounds, with Tyreik Burton and Josh Lumbus finishing with 10 points apiece.
  • Edinboro shot 37.5 percent from the floor but made 24-of-29 free throws and made 12-of-25 3-pointers. Thiel shot 46.8 percent from the floor but made just 3-of-10 3-pointers and was 13-of-20 from the line. Thiel committed 19 turnovers compared to just eight for the Fighting Scots, leading to a 22-4 advantage in points off turnovers. The Tomcats held a 45-41 advantage on the glass.   
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 47-58, 5th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Thiel: Tim Loomis (Lock Haven '76) -- 132-143, 12th year; 266-334, 23rd Year Overall
  • The long-time head coach is in his 23rd season overall and 12th at Thiel. He owns a 132-143 record at Thiel, and his overall record is 266-334.
  • A year ago, he led the Tomcats to a 16-9 finish, the most wins since his 2011-12 edition won 16 games. In 2010-11, he led Thiel to a 20-7 record and was named the Presidents Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. 
  • He has coached two PAC Players of the Year, Blair Rozenblad in 2011 and Tyreik Burton last year.
  • His background includes stints as the head coach at California (Pa.) and Florida Atlantic, leading Florida Atlantic from Division II to Division I status. He was also an assistant coach at Cal, and in 2007 was inducted into the Cal Hall of Fame.
  • He served as an assistant coach at Penn State from 1986-89. In addition, he enjoyed a very successful tenure as the head coach at Kennedy Catholic High School, leading the Golden Eagles to the PIAA playoffs all five years, including two trips to the championship game

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro ended the 2016-17 season with an 8-18 record. That included a 6-16 record in league contests, as the Fighting Scots finished eighth in the PSAC West and failed to make the conference tournament after qualifying the previous two years.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll.
  • The Fighting Scots return a pair of starters in seniors Jaymon Mason and Mike Beck. Mason, a 6'3" guard, finished second in the PSAC and 11th in Division II in scoring at 23.0 ppg. He averaged 20 ppg. for the second straight year. He also led the Fighting Scots in assists (144) and 3-pointers made 72-of-178. Mason was a first team All-PSAC West selection for the second straight year and also was named to the Division II Bulletin honorable mention All-American team for the second straight campaign.  
  • Beck is a 6'4" swingman who joined Mason as a starter in all 26 games. He averaged 6.7 ppg. and 3.1 rpg. He has started 52 straight games.
  • Maceo Baston II is another key returner. A slender 6'5" senior, the juco transfer averaged 6.7 ppg. and 3.5 rpg. in his first season as a Fighting Scot. However, he started the final nine games of the season and averaged 14.2 ppg. and 5.0 rpg. during that stretch.
  • Edinboro welcomes back Jack Frank in the middle. A 6'8" junior, he started the first 11 contests before going down with a season-ending injury. While averaging just 3.5 ppg., he was the team's top rebounder at 5.7 per game before going down.
  • A pair of transfers figure to play major roles this year. Keyshawn Liggins is a transfer from Idaho State. A 6'5" swingman, the senior also played at Big Bend JC. Anthony Coleman is a 6'3" junior by way of Cincinnati State CC. He averaged 18.2 ppg. and 5.1 rpg. with 67 3-pointers a year ago.    
  • Two local freshman could also see extended action in a reserve role. Alex Jay is a 6'3" guard who played at General McLane High School and scored over 1,000 career points. Jaryn Simpson is a 6'1" guard and a product of cathedral Prep.   
Scouting the Tomcats
  • Thiel finished with a 16-9 record a year ago, reaching the Presidents Athletic Conference semifinals before losing to top-seeded Thomas More. The Tomcats went into the tournament as the third seed after finishing the regular season with an 11-07 record in league play.
  • The Tomcats welcome back four starters, including PAC Player of the Year Tyreik Burton. The 5'9" senior averaged a league-high 18.0 ppg. He was Thiel's top 3-point threat with 46 in 125 attempts, accounting for almost half of Thiel's total 3-pointers made last season. He also paced the team in assists (65) and was second in steals (30).
  • Josh Lumbus, a 6'4" senior forward, was the only other player in double figures last year, averaging 12.0 ppg. and shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. He ranked second on the team in rebounding (5.6 rpg.).
  • Alonzo Brown and Avril Campbell are other returning starters. Brown is a 6'6" junior guard who averaged 8.8 ppg. and had 56 assists. Campbell, a 6'4" senior forward, contributed 8.7 ppg. and 5.3 rpg. Campbell was the only player to start all 25 games.
